Psycho Vertical Friday 30 & Saturday 31 March

Based on his best-selling autobiography of the same name, Psycho Vertical is a raw and emotional study of the complex life and motivations of British writer, funny-man and unlikely hero-mountaineer, Andy Kirkpatrick. The film focuses on his 18-day solo ascent of El Capitan, Yosemite. This unique, raw and intimate portrait of one of climbing’s most unpredictable and celebrated figures explores how our past shapes us, drives us forward, and stays with us all our lives.

Visionary director Wes Anderson returns with an all-star stop-motion animated feature that is destined to win your heart. Set in a dystopian future Japan, an outbreak of “canine flu” has led to all dogs being quarantined on Trash Island, an exile colony. 12-year-old Atari Kobayashi (Koyu Rankin) defies the authorities to embark on a daring rescue mission to the island to save his beloved dog Spots (Liev Schreiber). A hard rain is about to fall on a small town in Southern China. News of the robbery spreads fast within the town and, over the course of one night, everyone starts looking for Xiao and his money in this whirlwind neo-noir. With meticulous line-work and muted solid colours, Liu Jian’s second feature is a pioneering slice of independent Chinese animation. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. The Islands and the Whales Tuesday 3 April (18.30)

In their remote home in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islanders have always eaten what nature could provide; hunting whales and seabirds. But today, it is not the controversy surrounding whaling that threatens the Faroese way of life; the danger is coming from the whales themselves. Their beloved whales are toxic, contaminated by the outside world. What once secured their survival now endangers their children, and the Faroe Islanders must make a choice between health and tradition.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Mike Day.

Based on the romance between 17th-century Mughal ruler Shah Jahan and his queen, this epic silent film is the ravishing, romantic tale behind the creation of one of the world’s most iconic structures: the Taj Mahal. The film is the story of humble potter Shiraz, who follows his childhood sweetheart Selima when slave traders sell her to the future emperor. Shot entirely on location in India, it features lavish costumes and gorgeous settings – all the more impressive in this restoration that features a specially commissioned score by the Grammy Award-winning Anoushka Shankar.

Custody Jusqu'à la garde Friday 13 - Thursday 26 April

Xavier Legrand won the Glasgow Film Festival Audience Award for this, his debut feature: a tense, gripping depiction of the fallout from a bitter custody battle. Miriam (Léa Drucker) has left her husband Antoine (Denis Ménochet) and is now seeking sole custody of their son Julien (Thomas Gioria). Both sides seem to be hiding something, and with accusations of violence, the judge must decide whether or not to give a seemingly repentant Antoine the benefit of the doubt. Her decision marks the beginning of a brilliantly acted, tautly handled drama in which Legrand calmly escalates the tension towards breaking point. GFF18

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY EVENTS FEATURING FILMS PAST AND PRESENT

Visible Cinema: Lives in Sign Languages Wednesday 25 April (Film starts: 18.00)

Featuring thought provoking contemporary short films spanning drama, horror and comedy that each bring stories about D/deaf culture and experience to the big screen. Lives in Sign Languages is a London Short Film Festival touring shorts programme for D/deaf audiences curated by young Deaf programmer, Zoe McWhinney. The programme is supported by the BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery.

Access Film Club: A Fantastic WomanTuesday 10 April (Film starts: 18.00)

Marina (Daniela Vega) is planning her future with lover Orlando (Francisco Reyes) when he tragically falls ill and dies. Her world shatters, but the fact that she is transgender adds terribly to her ordeal. Featuring a trans actress in a lead role, this film won an Oscar for best foreign language film and this marks a breakthrough in transgender cinema.

NT Live: Macbeth Thursday 10 May (18.45)

Shakespeare’s most intense and terrifying tragedy, directed by Rufus Norris (The Threepenny Opera, London Road), will see Rory Kinnear (Young Marx, Othello) and Anne-Marie Duff (Oil, Suffragette) return to the National Theatre to play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The ruined aftermath of a bloody civil war. Ruthlessly fighting to survive, the Macbeths are propelled towards the crown by forces of elemental darkness.

Bolshoi Ballet: Coppélia Sunday 10 June (15.45)

Swanhilda notices her fiancee Franz is infatuated with the beautiful Coppélia who sits reading on her balcony each day. Nearly breaking up the two sweethearts, Coppelia is not what she seems and Swanhilda decides to teach Franz a lesson…

The Bolshoi’s unique version of Coppélia exhibits a fascinating reconstruction of the original 19th century choreography of this ebullient comedy involving a feisty heroine, a boyish fiancee with a wandering eye, and an old dollmaker. The company’s stunning corps de ballet shines in the divertissements and famous “dance of the hours,” and its principals abound in youthful energy and irresistible humor in this effervescent production.
