“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14). We are at the midpoint of our Lenten journey of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep” along the road to conversion. The most powerful stories of conversion are proclaimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake us out of our sleep. Today’s Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind expos-es the real blindness in the time of Christ—the blindness of the self-righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks, at the Easter Vigil, the Church will proclaim “Christ our Light” as the paschal candle is carried into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that still pervades our lives, communities, and world, be dispelled by the Christ who comes to bring sight to the blind and light to the world.

Today’s Readings

So how’s that Lenten act of penance working out? What did you choose to give up or do? Some-times what we chose to do or not do during Lent, is akin to New Year’s Resolutions, easily forgetta-ble. It’s not a matter of what you do or not to, it is just important to know why we’re doing what we’re doing, or not. So why are you doing what you are doing or not? In the same vein, why do you pray? Why do you go to Mass? The answer to those questions will determine the future quality of your faith. So many of our faithful just go to Mass but they are not quite sure why they are there. Faith is a process, it takes time, work and patience. Just like so many of the things we do in life, like learning the piano, learning a skill or discipline, it takes time, patience and com-mitment to be good at anything. So why would we think that our Faith would be any different? The question becomes are we willing to put the time in to get better at it? Are we committed to making our Faith the most important thing in our lives? That im-plies that we have taken the time to realize what our Faith can do for us. If you have a teen or someone who just doesn’t see the need for Church or religion, ask them to educate themselves on the history of our Church and explore the facts that there has never been a more charitable organization in the history of the world. If education fails them, ask them to read about the Eucharist, it is Jesus Christ, not a symbol, not a sign, it IS Jesus Christ. How can receiving Him worthily not change them? If the Eucharist doesn’t move them, try asking them to go to church for someone or something. Have a sick relative, go for them. Know someone’s who dying, go for them and pray for the repose of their soul. That is one of the original reasons the Mas came to be, to pray for those who have died, to pray for the remission of their sins and that they might be with God in Heav-en, which is why we offer Masses for our beloved dead. When you do eventually come to Mass, you should always have a person or intention in mind. Offer it to the Lord and that intention is your reason to be here. Worshiping in the context of the Mass, has changed minds and hearts. It has caused people to completely change their lives, be-cause they let God in. They saw the need to let God in. Do we? Do we believe that God can change us? Help us? Direct our lives? Change our cul-ture? Change hearts and minds? Do we fully ap-preciate the awesome power of God? Do we even realize what God can do for us, or our families, our marriage, and most importantly, our eternities? So get back to that Lenten sacrifice and know why you’re doing it. Giving up cupcakes must mean more than a Lenten diet!

Saints and Observances

First Reading — As the prophet Samuel anointed David with oil, the spirit of the L rushed upon David (1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — You who were once darkness are now light in the Lord (Ephesians 5:8-14). Gospel — The man who had been blind from birth proclaimed: The one called Jesus made clay with his saliva, anointed my eyes with it, and told me to wash (John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]).

LENTEN PRACTICES Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. ln addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Our Stations of the Cross may have been cancelled, for now, but you can still participate in them online. There are many websites offering them out there. Just check out the ones we suggested for Mass. But here is another that you might like. You can find it on the BUSTED HALO website at https://bustedhalo.com/video/virtual-stations-of-the-cross.

ONLINE MASS Mass… Do you miss it? We sure hope so! But all is not lost. You can watch Mass daily right on our website homepage now. Just scroll down the page a bit, and you will see Bishop Barron’s daily Mass feed. Or click on one of the banners in our scroll for Mass from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. There are a lot of ways you can watch or lis-ten to Mass. Here’s a list of our favorites. • EWTN

TV: Consult your cable schedule Online: Daily Mass is available at https://www.ewtn.com.

• ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL Last Sunday the Cardinal began saying and televis-ing private Mass at our Cathedral. You can catch it on Sunday’s at 10:15AM at https://saintpatrickscathedral.org. They televise daily Mass, as well.

• CATHOLIC FAITH NETWORK This network offer Mass and more. Visit https://www.catholicfaithnetwork.org.

• SIRIUSXM THE CATHOLIC CHANNEL Tune to Channel 129 for Mass and lots of very enter-taining and relevant Catholic programming.

PARISH UPDATES With all the very necessary measures in place to keep us safe, we have had to make some changes to our Parish routine. Aside from Masses being cancelled, we antici-pate there may be an impact on Holy Week and Easter, as well as First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Nev-ertheless, we are a people of hope, and we will put our creativity to work to address these most important needs. Until then, here is a little on what to expect. • Weekday and Sunday Masses, and all gatherings

and devotionals, including the Stations of the Cross, and Adoration, are canceled until further notice.

• Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals are now only permitted for the immediate family.

• All parish activities and meetings are cancelled. Rectory Office hours are also affected by these changes. Please email the office for all non-urgent matters, or questions. This includes: • Requests for information concerning 2019 donations. • Mass intention requests (aka Mass Cards). • Questions concerning parish activities. In the event of an emergency, please call the Rectory at 591-7480, and listen carefully to the prompts. If you do not have an emergency, and would like to simply leave a message, you can do so and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Unfortunately, some of our most anticipated events have also been postponed or cancelled. This includes: • The Easter Egg Hunt and Breakfast With the Bunny • The Parish Seder • The Altar and Rosary Society Communion Brunch • The ICC Roaring 20s Gala Looks like we are going to have a VERY busy Fall! Don’t forget our sponsors who supported our Gala from the get go: Ivkosic Painting, 02 Living, Irvington Hard-ware, and Kelly & Knaplund Law Firm. We owe them a debt of gratitude, and you will be hearing a lot more about them in the coming months. Finally, earlier this week all parishioners on our mailing list were asked to join Fr. Ashman each evening at 6PM to join in communal ICC prayer. If you would like to join, here is our daily prayer.

Mary, our Patron and our Mother,

As you protected and nurtured your Son, our Saviour, we your children, beg your intercession,

protection and consolation. May we trust as you trusted. May we love as you loved. May your Son

bestow upon us the grace to care for the elderly and the vulnerable, be vigilant of our neighbor, quell our

fears, and increase our faith. May these and all prayers unite us with our brothers and sisters, until

such time when we may once again worship together as one family of believers, renewed, hopeful and ever faithful. Mary, the Immaculate Conception, grant us faith, hope and love, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
