There is an extensive road network that leads to the province from various parts of Luzon. There are several bus lines that ply the Manila-Vigan route.
The 405 km distance from Manila to Ilocos Sur is a comfortable and scenic seven hour ride.
You can also get to Ilocos Sur by plane through Laoag International Airport. To get to
Vigan, more than any other Ilocano town, tells the story of Ilocandia. It is almost four centuries old, and was once known as “Kabigbigaan” from “biga” (Alocasia Indica), a coarse erect and araceous plant with large and ornate leaves with grows on the banks of the rivers. Its name “Bigan” was later changed

along the western coast of Northern
Luzon. It is bounded by Ilocos Norte in
the north, Abra in the northeast, Mt.
Province in the east, Benguet in the
southeast, La Union in the south and
the Luzon Sea and Lingayen Gulf in the
west. The province falls within latitudes
16° 40’ to 17° 54’ north and
longitudes 120° 20’ to 120° 56’ east.
Vigan City, the provincial capital is
approximately 408 kilometers by
road from Manila, 139
kilometers north of San
Fernando City, and 80
kilometers south of Laoag
City.
Ilocos Sur has an area of
2,579.60 square kilometers
occupying about 20.10 percent
History records that three years after the founding of the City of Manila, Legaspi dispatched the ‘conquistador’ Salcedo on a mission to the north where he established the Ciudad Fernandina in honor of King Ferdinand, the reigning ruler of Spain at the time, and for his reward was granted a royal “encomienda”.
Villa Fernandina became the capital of the whole Ilocos which then embraced the
