Worthy Brother Knights and ladies, where has the first year gone? Our Past State Deputies have said at the start of the 2013-2014 that the fraternal year will be over before you know it. How they were right. It seems like just yesterday we were preparing for the 2013-2014 District Deputy Organizational and Installation meeting and we have just finished the 2014-2015 District Deputy Organizational meeting. With that being said, that means a new fraternal year has begun. What a great foundation we have to build on for a successful 2014-2015 year. 2302 new brother Knights joined our order last fraternal year. That means 2302 Catholic men who have the opportunity to be a better Catholic, A better husband, a better father and a better person in his community. We must continue to recruit new members because our Church, Holy Father, Bishops and Priests, need each and every Catholic man and his family to join together in a common cause, Evangelization! To live life as Christ has intended for us to live. The Intellectually Disabled needs each and every Catholic man and his family to join our order to help provide a normal way of life that is filled with Respect, Dignity and Love. Our Communities need every Catholic man and his family to join us so we can provide Coats for Kids who might not have a new warm winter coat in our harsh winters. We need each and every Catholic man to join us so they, working together with others, can provide a new home people in our community at a Habitat for Humanity project. Our Food Banks need each and every Catholic man and his families to join us so the food banks will not run out of food. So yes it is about the numbers. Numbers growing our order to benefit our Church, our Communities and Each other. The Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney dreamed of having a Knights of Columbus presence in each parish is furthered in Illinois by adding 7 new councils last fraternal year. 890 first degrees were reported, 41 second degrees and 46 third degrees were conducted in the last fraternal year also. 51 Roundtables were reported and our Charitable Activities reached new goals. Illinois donated a total of 6,870,163 dollars which equals $93.87 cents per member. Those totals placed Illinois 4th among all jurisdictions of our order. Quebec was in first place, Texas, California and then Illinois. So what a foundation we have to build on. At our just completed District Deputy Organizational and Installation meeting held in Normal I challenged each Worthy District Deputy to conduct at least one first degree per month in his District and to schedule and conduct at least one 2nd and 3rd degree this fraternal year. I also challenged each District Deputy to have no less than 1 Star Council in his district before the fraternal year ends. Each District Deputy was given a goal to strive to be a Star District Deputy at the end of this fraternal year but if that is to happen we need you - Worthy Illinois Brother Knights. This goal can be obtained with every council active in Membership recruitment and striving for One Member, Per Council, Per Month. monthly first degrees. To be a host council for a 2nd and 3rd degree during this fraternal year. Our goal is a simple one, recruit 1 Member Per Council, Per Month, have at a minimum of 1 Star Council Per District and add 1 new council in each diocese this fraternal year. Thru our Passion for our Faith, Pride in our order and the Performance of our membership Illinois will obtain and surpass these goals and have a very successful fraternal year ahead. VIVAT JESUS,

SKIP STATE CHAPLAIN Most Rev. Bishop Siegel Dear Brother Knights, On August 15, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast celebrates that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven. Mary’s assumption is a vision of what God offers to us. She placed her trust in God, and in God’s hands she is victorious over evil in this world. By God’s grace, she is not defeated by pain, suffering or death and this feast tells us that what God did for Mary, He will do for us as well. When Pope Pius XII declared this dogma in 1950, he chose his timing quite deliberately. The feast of the Assumption had been celebrated on August 15 since the 7th or 8th century and had been a holy day for over 1,000 years. Yet Pope Pius decided to make this teaching a formal dogma when he did because the world had just endured the tremendous upheaval of World War II – in carnage of the battlefield, the atrocities of the holocaust and then the beginnings of the Cold War and the rise of world-wide communism. In contrast to these attacks on human life and spirit, the Pope placed Mary before us as a sign of hope. Mary stands as one like us, a flesh and blood human being, and her glorification by her Son shows our potential- what future can lie ahead of us if we remain faithful. In our own time when we see so much war and destruction in our world, the degradation of the human person and the human body, and when we experience our own illnesses, losses and pains, Mary is given to us as a channel of hope, healing and peace. Mary knew struggle in her own life. Throughout her life, from that moment of her “yes” to the angel Gabriel to standing at the foot of her son’s cross, she would be asked to accept struggle and hardship – and through it all she remained steadfast. Mary’s fortitude, faith and perseverance are held up as an example for us as we strive for holiness in and through our Christian vocation, as we work daily to live out our faith as Knights - in our homes, at work, in our Councils and in our parishes – in all we do and say. If we too, strive to be faithful to Christ, then we too, will share in the victory of His resurrection. The world with its promises of pleasure, wealth and power are not the end all. The struggles and sorrows of life don’t have the final word. Our final goal is beyond. We are citizens of this world and are responsible for it – yet our true home lies ahead in God’s heavenly kingdom. So this feast of the Assumption of Mary is more than just a nice commemoration of some doctrine or dogma – it is meant to inspire and change us. We need to be reminded of our great potential and our true goal as children of God. Mary stands as that sign of hope in the midst of life’s difficulties, crosses and contradictions. The challenge is for us, with Mary, to trust in God’s promises, to give our ‘yes’ to his will, to live our faith actively and fully. The almighty has done great things for us – let us rejoice and give thanks to him. Our Lady, Queen of the Knights - Pray for us. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel STATE ASSOCIATE CHAPLAIN Rev Chuck Tuttle

Dear Brother Knights and Families, The new Fraternal Year is well underway. Our State Leadership has just gathered in Bloomington for the Mid-Summer DD/Organizational meeting and has been enlightened, motivated, and challenged for the tasks that lie before us. Each beginning brings with it many opportunities to make the necessary changes to be successful and to grow. Each new beginning also brings with it the opportunities to try something new and innovative; to break free from the mantras “well we have always done it this way” or “we tried that and it won’t work”. Change can be scary, but it can also be exciting and good.

As we enter upon this new fraternal year I am reminded of a few lines from my favorite movie Dune:

“A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then that it is the year” 2014-2015.

“A person needs new experiences. They jar something deep inside, allowing him to grow. Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.”

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me” Our “delicate time” revolves around the need to be more attentive to membership: recruitment and retention. To grow the Order increases the possibilities that our members, Councils and Order can and will make significant differences in the world around us, especially in a world that is slipping more and more toward a secular, non-religious atmosphere. Diversity and change can add new “spice” to the life of the Council and its members. Sometimes the hidden gifts and abilities of members remain dormant until they are asked to be involved and to share their ideas and talents. Success does not just happen; it is the result of diligent, hard work. But fear of failure can also prevent one from even trying. But the real failure in life is to not even try: to remain entrapped in the apprehension that one can’t or won’t succeed. It’s time for the Illinois Jurisdiction “to awaken” with the Pride, Passion and Performance that will carry it through to new heights of success and growth. “Live long and prosper” --- oops, that’s from another franchise, but leaves more thought for a future newsletter!

STATE SECRETARY Bill Doerfler [email protected] STAR COUNCIL

The Star Council Awards is the highest award that a council can attain. Measuring excellence in MEMBERSHIP, INSURANCE PROMOTION AND PROGRAMING ACTIVITY, it represents a true benchmark of what makes a Knights of Columbus council outstanding. The best way to make your council a Star Council is to have a plan and get started right away. If you haven’t done so, schedule a meeting with the key leaders in your council and make sure you include your district deputy and field agent to set-up your game plan for becoming a Star Council in 2014-2015. Recruiting at least one member per month – and involving prospective members in council programs would be excellent way to start.

Steve Meyer organized the St Cecilia Council 13216's quarterly Glen Carbon Adopt-A-Highway. Nine Knights and six of parish's youth walked both sides of Glen Carbon Road from the I-270 overpass to Dairy Queen on IL Rt 159. The weather was great and the conversation and

highway clean-up fulfilling.

Set a goal of making your council a STAR COUNCIL this year. THEN MAKE IT HAPPEN I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Delegates at this year’s State Convention for my re-election as your State Secretary. I look forward to a productive, successful and fun year with everyone’s help. I look forward to working with each and every one of you, remember I’m available to you be phone (815-790-9737) or by email [email protected] should you ever want to contact me. Theresa and I look forward to seeing each of you when we can. My promise to you is to work hard to represent you as an Illinois Knight of Columbus. Fraternally,

Bill Doerfler STATE TREASURER Ted Stites [email protected]

The 2014-2015 Fraternal year is in full swing and by now I trust your councils are moving ahead to get off to a great start. The State Family and your district deputies held a very successful and enjoyable DD Organizational Meeting, July 11-13, which included the installation of your state officers and new district deputies. We are ready to roll! By time you receive this newsletter the Supreme Convention will be in session (or may have just completed) in Orlando. Since many of you may never attend a Supreme Convention, I invite you to check your local television listings. EWTN, as well as Salt & Light TV have provided coverage in recent years. And for those with SiriusXM radio, The Catholic Channel is usually on hand with live reports. Now that our early-year meetings and conventions are winding down, it's time to get our council machines in full gear. There are a number of forms due during the first couple of months. The Report of Officers, Form 185 was due July 1. If you haven't submitted it yet, please do so ASAP. The Service Program Report, Form 365 is due August 1, and the Semiannual Council Audit, Form 1295, is due August 15. Please ensure your Trustees conduct an accurate audit. As a conferring officer, I encourage all councils to schedule first degrees for the entire year, now. Schedule a first degree at least once a quarter. And discuss with your district deputy the possibility of hosting a major degree. Illinois had a less than stellar membership showing last year. Let's get off to a quick start to reverse the ebbing tide and show the other jurisdictions that Illinois is ready to lead the pack again! All it takes is one member, per council, per month!

I look forward to serving you again this year as your State Treasurer. I will work diligently to manage our accounts and investments. I will also make every attempt to process checks and payments to our councils as expediently as possible. Please understand that delays are often caused by heavy workload in the state office, or improperly completed forms, especially with ID payments and disbursements. Please be patient and we will rectify issues as quickly as possible. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Vivat Jesus!

Ted

STATE ADVOCATE Frank Schwartz [email protected] We recently finished the Yearly Organizational meeting being installed once again as the State Advocate along with our other State Officers; and it was my pleasure to meet over 20 many newly installed District Deputies. The new year promises to be a year of excitement, opportunity, and a year full of Knights working for Christ. At the meeting, DD's were told about a new State Advocate Tab on the state web site, where council Grand Knights, Home Association Presidents, and DD's could find at a glance, the hot topics of the last fraternal year to help them during the upcoming fraternal year. Why not check it out today? The DD's were asked why it was so important to increase the number of members in the Knights of Columbus. The focus started with a simple theme One Member, Per Council, Per Month. Showing how if every council did just that, we could increase our numbers by 4,800 plus members in all age groups and by doing so we could increase our programming and our charitable giving by over $ 1,200,000.00. One example given was if each of those new members bought just two Vocation raffle book they would increase our ability to support new Seminars by $ 86,000.00. Can you imagine or begin to imagine what that would mean to our church, our families, and our state as a whole. District Deputy's all challenged each other as to the number of Councils in their district that will become a Star Council, committing to the State Deputy at least one Star Council per District resulting in over 90 Star Councils by the end of this Fraternal year. What will your council be? How will your council contribute to making Illinois stronger, larger and better? How will your councils show Illinois Pride? How will your council perform this tasks of One Member, Per Council, Per Month? That easy with the Performance of a First Degree Once every month; now that councils can read, show a CD and perform a degree anytime and day of the Month this task will be easy and councils can be Star by as early as December 2014. All you need is the Passion to want to make sure that you can make a personal difference in your future the future of the church the future of our great country. To show you how easy this is I recruited my first new member Kyle Bladwin who I hope to degree the first Tuesday of August. If every council Officer recruited one member that would be 12 members alone for each council. It is easy just ask them. Let's all work to Make Illinois number one in the upcoming Fraternal year Number one in Charity, Number one in Programming and of course number one in membership. What will you do?

STATE WARDEN Steve Mann [email protected]

I want to thank all of my Brother Knights for their support. I will work hard for you this year as I fulfill the duties of your State Warden. I wish to ask you two questions - How long has it been since you last attended a Knights of Columbus Degree Ceremony? Also have you seen the new Third Degree? If the answers are “It’s been awhile” and “No I haven’t” then I would like to invite you to attend the next First Degree your Council hosts and the next Third Degree in your Council’s District. I know most Brother Knights do not like to attend events by themselves; so I have a great idea - Recruit a fellow Catholic Gentleman to join our Order and you can attend together. You as a sponsor and he as a candidate and when the ceremony is complete you can leave together as Brother Knights. If you belong to an active council or one that wishes to become more active than it is, then you know it takes members to make sure the Council programs are fully implemented. Whether it is an activity that supports the Church and its Priests or the ID Drive, no program can be successful without Brother Knights.

6

I know each and every one of you joined the Knights for a reason; please share this gift of Knighthood with your friends. It’s real easy to invite someone to join the Order and it won’t even cost you a stamp, all you have to do is JUST ASK HIM! Vivat Jesus,

Steve

STATE IMMEDIATE PAST STATE DEPUTY Richard Spada [email protected]

Strengthening Family and Church Relationships Vivat Jesus brother Knights! July ushered in the start of a new fraternal year and with it opportunities to review our accomplishments and renew our plans to make adjustments in areas that may have fallen short of our expectations. As a start, Knights of Columbus throughout our Order have designated the month of August particularly to celebrate family. Celebrations are accomplished in various ways such as picnics, prayer services, and group outings just to mention a few. In a special way, Knights from around the world will gather in Orlando, Florida for our annual Supreme convention, that is in many ways a gigantic family reunion! Convention offers opportunities to renew old acquaintances and make new ones. Prayer will surround our events and there will be celebrations of accomplishments and family that tend to inspire members returning to their home jurisdictions and councils. The international convention Mass is often attended by thousands with as many as 90 Bishops and Cardinals from all over the world officiating at one of the largest family gatherings to renew our relationship with Holy Mother Church. Personally, I’ve always found this event to be very motivating and encouraging to move forward with continued involvement in Knights of Columbus activities and leadership. Our Supreme Knight, brother Carl Anderson, has announced upcoming programs that will focus on family as we lead up to the international family event taking place in Pennsylvania sometime in September of this year. There is possibility that Pope Francis will attend that grand event. Happy summer brother knights! From Linda and our children, the whole Spada family wishes you and your families a blessed and fruitful year. Help make your Knights of Columbus councils grow in numbers so that opportunities are afforded non-members to grow stronger in their faith and as members of their own families! Vivat Jesus! STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR Bob Bukowski rebukowski@earthlink,net

As we start the new fraternal year every council should start reaching for the stars. The best way of being all you can be in programming is to start with the IL-SP7. The “Spirit of Illinois” program provides every council the opportunity to practice the lessons of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. It lays out a plan on how a council can achieve Star Council.

This is the time for the Grand Knight and Council Program Director to meet with your District Deputy and fill out a Spirit of Illinois tally sheet indicating your councils anticipated level of participation in this fraternal year. Make sure to send copies of the tally sheets to the State Office by September 15, 2014. Success will come from active programs plus active recruitment because every program represents a recruitment opportunity.

Remember that Program of the month and year, Knight and Family of the month and year started on April 1st. Councils should already be sending in State Council Service Award, Knight and Family of the month forms.

Start planning now for the upcoming State and Supreme programs including the Soccer Challenge, Free Throw Contest, Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest, Culture of Life Puzzle program, and the Spelling Bee and Essay contests. All these Programs

should have a membership table where helpers can check in, where councils can show off some of their other activities they are involved in, and where membership materials can be displayed so a prospective member can pick up materials and consider joining the Knights of Columbus.

Let’s Celebrate with and Congratulate council 14008 for sponsoring an International Free Throw Champion, Bobby Fiorante, in the 13 year old boy’s category. Programs like this help in the visibility of our councils in our communities.

The entire Programming Team is dedicated and is available to help make you council the best they can be with programs that will help you achieve Star Council.

STATE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR Erik Luckett [email protected]

Brothers: A new fraternal year has dawned, officers have been sworn in, District Deputies have been organized and the real work begins! Our Mission is to Grow The Order. The Holy Father, Pope Francis calls us to do more for those most in need. To answer this call, we need more members so that we can continue to increase our man-hours and charitable dollars being raised. We must continue to be a strong voice promoting the Gospel values in our ever more secular society and standing strong defending religious freedoms! We must continue to be the strong right arm of the Church. Growing the Order means Positive Membership Growth and getting All Councils Active during this fraternal year! New members bring new ideas, new enthusiasm, and the ability to better support the Parish and the local Community. How do we grow the order? It really is very simple - We use:

Check out this video on the State Website and share it with your council TODAY! In order to accomplish our goals, we need several things:

ONE MEMBER - PER COUNCIL - PER MONTH

ONE FIRST DEGREE - PER DISTRICT - PER MONTH

ONE STAR COUNCIL - PER DISTRICT

ONE NEW COUNCIL - PER DIOCESE

ONE NEW MEMBER - IN EVERY COUNCIL means ALL COUNCILS ACTIVE

This fraternal year we will have Quarterly Recruitment Rewards for Grand Knights and individual Recruiters. The 1st quarter

reward for Recruiters is a KC Pen and 1,000 VIP points from the State. All Grand Knights whose councils get a FAST START

on the ONE MEMBER - PER COUNCIL - PER MONTH program will receive a gift card. Be sure to check with your District

Deputy for all the details of these incentive programs.

8

Planning is Key! A council’s membership plan should incorporate recruitment efforts into all Programming and Charitable

Opportunities. Use your new fraternal year success planner and be prepared to grow your Council. No one plans to fail, they

often just fail to plan. District Deputies and Field Agents can be extremely helpful meeting with council officers to help layout

the blueprint that culminates in a STAR COUNCIL June 30, 2015. Success is built one step at a time. Take that first step today

by meeting with your leadership team and make plans now for a great year.

Programs, Membership, and Charities are interwoven like the fibers in a cord. The more fibers we have the stronger the cord that binds us all together in faith. Recruitment – Retention – Reactivation pave the road that leads to Positive Membership Growth. Vibrant active councils who coordinate Charities, Programming and Membership are key to Growing The Order. These councils are well on their way to STAR COUNCIL. Check out the “Be The Difference” video on the State Website. It’s only 1 minute long, but it speaks volumes about the Knights! Your Membership need attention! Be fraternal, helping those in need and raising up those that have fallen away. Open your arms wide to the new recruits and their families, who bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to your Councils. Continue to give more of your time, talent, and treasure for the greater glory of the Lord. I look forward to seeing some of you and sharing the experience of the Supreme Convention In Orlando, August 3rd through the 7th. Vivat Jesus!

Erik Luckett STATE CHARITIBLE ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR Jeff Peters [email protected] Brother Knights, Welcome to fraternal year 2014-2015! I hope everyone is excited about a new year! I know that I am! We continue to measure ourselves by our State Deputy’s words of PASSION-PRIDE-PERFORMACE. Three words, but three words that carry so much meaning; especially when applied to our charitable activities. As a Council, do you have the PASSION to carry out our First Principle of the Order, Charity; and help our fellow man? As a Council, do you have the PRIDE to get involved and do what is right? And, as a Council, will you show by your PERFORMANCE the Passion & Pride to meet and even exceed your State Charitable goals? I believe that you do and will. I believe by following the direction of these three words, we can do great things in regards to our State Charitable Activities. The Supreme Council has also given us a guideline, ONE MEMBER, PER COUNCIL, PER MONTH. Not so hard when you really think about it. Just think what we could do with twelve new members! With twelve new active members we could host another breakfast or fundraiser. With twelve new members we have the potential to raise even more monies for your Council and State Charities. Just think of all the opportunities and new ideas that twelve new members could provide. I would like to thank all of the Council’s and Brother Knights for all of your efforts last year in raising charitable monies. Times are tough, but as Knights you found a way to make it happen. For the first time in a while, you exceeded the ID Drive goal; the GAF and Pro-Life funds each saw an increase and the Newman and Vocations funds held about the same. It doesn’t get any easier this year. Economic times are still lean, but I believe that the Grand Knights, Officers & Chairmen of the Council’s will find new ways to continue to raise charitable monies and once again meet our charitable goals; and even grow them. Maybe this year we could meet or exceed two or three of them, if not all five! What a year that would be! So, in advance, I thank all of you for the Passion-Pride-Performance that you are set to put into action this fraternal year.

ILLINOIS KNIGHTS IN ACTION

Leo XIII Council 805 in Evergreen Park donated $260 to the Aquinas Literacy Center, which is run by the Adrian Dominican Sisters of Chicago. The literacy center provides services to people who would like to learn English as a second language.

tournaments at Mount Greenwood Park.

As always, the key to a successful year, whether it is Membership, Programming or Charitable Activities, is Planning, Planning & Planning. PLAN to succeed. Don’t wait until the last minute to plan your charitable event. Plan ahead and it will be a success. There are many tools on the State Charities website http://www.illinoisknights.org/mary/charity/charity.php (guidelines, forms & activities) to help you; and all of the Chairmen are ready to serve and help you in any way they are able. Please make use of their talents. The annual Intellectual Disabilities Drive is just around the corner on September 19-21st. Hopefully, everyone has attended or will attend one of the many ID Kick-Off meetings that Co-chairmen Ted Glaser & Ed Feeney will be conducting during the months of July & August. Candy orders should be ordered, sites secured and volunteers lined up and ready to go. In a show of UNITY & FRATERNITY, KC Council’s all around the great jurisdiction of Illinois will be collecting donations to help God’s Special People. In these tough times, many organizations, like Special Olympics, appreciate the charity of the Knights of Columbus. Not only does the ID Drive help those with Intellectual Disabilities, but it does so much more. In a quiet way, the ID Drive helps to promote Council Unity & Fraternity. The ID Drive is a great way to promote membership in the Knights of Columbus too. Invite members of the Parish to get involved and help. If there is a gentleman you have been trying to recruit, ask him to help. He will have a great time and will walk away with a great feeling. Don’t forget to get your family involved too. What better way to spend some family time together and teach our own children about Charity. Our young adults will soon be heading back to college; and many of them for the first time. The Newman Fund mailing (donor letter & card) will be sent out in September, so be looking for yours in the mail. If you are a Newman donor, please continue; and thank you. If you are not, please consider making a donation. Any amount is appreciated. If possible, please consider becoming a Newman Century Donor. We need to continue to support and maintain a Catholic presence at our colleges & universities, especially in today’s secular society. Please help provide a “Home Parish” away from home for our young adults. The Newman Centers rely on your support. The Vocations Raffle is underway. Raffle books have been ordered and hopefully you have received yours. If you need more books, please contact the State Office or Vocations Support Chairmen and let them know. Remember, this fundraiser is a Win-Win opportunity. The Council earns money on books sold, and the monies raised go to help support our Seminarians; our future Priests. Without your support of their chosen Vocation, we may one day find ourselves without Priest’s to administer the Eucharist and other Sacraments to us. Did you know that if your Council sold just 56 books, it would earn enough dollars to participate in the Supreme RSVP program! A Win-Win-Win! Additionally, Keep Christ in Christmas buttons are on sale now. There are a limited number of last year’s buttons for sale at clearance price, but on a first come, first serve basis. With the temperatures so warm, it may seem that December is a long way off, but as mentioned earlier, PLAN to succeed. The KCIC buttons are a great way to remind people of the true meaning of Christmas. Please remember to keep “Passing the Can” at every meeting and send in your General Assistance monies. We never know when the next disaster will occur; but, as Knights of Columbus we want to be prepared and ready to assist those in need just as we were able to do last November when the tornado’s struck central Illinois. Finally, our Pro-Life Fund is in need of your support and help. With October being Respect Life month, please consider holding a charitable event to raise funds for LIFE. Maybe a breakfast or dinner to raise funds towards your Council’s Pro-Life goal. But, it’s time to start planning now, because before we know it October will be here. PLAN to succeed. Brothers, we have a busy and challenging year ahead of us, but by utilizing ONE MEMBER, PER COUNCIL, PER MONTH we can grow our membership and have many more hands to help us with our charitable activities. And, if we believe in PASSION-PRIDE-PERFORMANCE, I believe that together we can accomplish great things. Have a great year; and remember that Charity is the FIRST principle of our Order. Fraternally,

Jeff Peters

STATE DISTRICT DEPUTY DIRECTOR Gary Schmidt [email protected]

July is coming to an end. August and the Supreme Convention are on the horizon. The new district deputies are probably still wondering what they have gotten into, but no need to worry. You have many people who are willing to help you. At the District Deputy meeting in Bloomington, you were given information on your job; pointers on how to do it. You, with Diocesan Chairmen and assistants made and took on challenges from other dioceses about who will be the best in membership, NCD and cutting down on the suspensions. Based on the numbers I heard, by now, the monthly 1st Degrees should be scheduled, the candidates checked out, the 1st Degree team in place and the proposers lined up to bring the candidates to the Degree. Hopefully you have attended the monthly council meetings, have given out the planners that you received and entered those important 1st Degree dates for each month or held your District Deputy meetings with all your councils and have made those important entries there. Remember to check on the Forms 185, Report of Elected Officers, and Form 365, Selected Chairmen and Directors and the DIR 1, Directory Information which updates the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary and council information for the state directory. Forms 185 and 365 are sent to Supreme Office and State Office and to the District Deputy. DIR 1 goes to State Office, copy to District Deputy. In August you will looking for the Semi-Annual Audits that are due on the 15th, those are hardcopy reports with signatures of Grand Knight and Trustees with original mailed to Supreme, copies to State Office and District Deputy and all reports should be filed in the councils files. A reminder for membership to grow, programming and charities need to be visible and working in your councils and districts. I was surprised when I heard that one-third of the District Deputies in Illinois are serving their first year. To all the District Deputies, thank you for accepting the office and the challenges that go with it. You have many people to help you, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember that you are the representative in your district of the Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson and our State Deputy Donald “Skip” Kinyon.

STATE PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR Robert Fuggiti [email protected] Websites can be a wonderful thing if: 1st you are on the internet and secondly if you use it. My article is not from my vast knowledge of Public Relations but from http://www.kofc.org/un/en/service/council/publicity/ on the Supreme website.

Council Publicity and Public Relations Members of the Knight of Columbus are continually searching for new ways to enhance our Order’s mission and contributions to the Church, community and fellowman. Public relations can be a very useful communications tool, advancing Knights of Columbus principles and building community support for our Order and its activities. This guide is designed to provide your council with the “tools of the trade” needed to carry out a successful public relations program. Public relations is based on communicating a message to an audience. To build a truly effective public relations program, the council’s messages should be ongoing to strengthen the Order’s image and broaden its impact on society.

11

Following the guidelines in this site, you will be able to conduct effective and consistent publicity programs for your council. There are many rewards and benefits to a well-planned public relations program. For the Knights of Columbus, an effective program can:

1. Create awareness in the community for our Order and its contributions. 2. Build a positive image for the Knights of Columbus as a whole, and your council in particular. 3. Create valuable exposure for the council and its activities. 4. Communicate key messages to target audiences. 5. Clear away misconceptions. 6. Strengthen community support for the Knights of Columbus and its mission. 7. Assist in recruiting new members.

Public relations is communications designed to create positive, widespread awareness of an organization, its role, programs and mission. A critical part of public relations is publicity. Successful publicity efforts result in editorial media exposure in the form of news or feature articles in newspapers and magazines, and references, announcements or interviews on radio and television stations. Publicity is a very effective way to inform the public about the many aspects of the Knights of Columbus in your community. Public Relations and Publicity vs. Advertising Like advertising, public relations relies heavily on the media to convey a specific message to key audiences. But unlike advertising, the publication space and station time resulting from public relations efforts are free. For example, a half-page advertisement in a major newspaper might cost up to or over $15,000, while the same amount of space for an editorial article generated by public relations is free. Unlike advertising, public relations cannot guarantee control of where, when and even if coverage will occur. The media will make those decisions. But when successful, public relations can create a major impact, since the media present the desired message on editorial pages and news broadcasts as opposed to paid advertising space and broadcast time. This is called a “third-party endorsement” and is very valuable to the credibility of an organization and its message. Use the links on http://www.kofc.org/un/en/service/council/publicity/ for various topics concerning building public awareness for your council and other related programs. Now that you have read my extremely intelligent article that I borrowed from supreme’s website, let me say, not all of us our members of MENSA but we have tools at our finger tips that can make us look a lot smarter than we are. If your council has a website then utilize the information on other websites that are available. If you don’t have a website find a member who can be your council’s Webmaster and create one. Tools are available that make it as simple to create the website as it is to create a newsletter. It’s time to throw away the chisel and stone but be careful where you throw them. Does your Council have a public relations Chairman? If Yes, then you are 100 points ahead for the P.R. contest that will be announced at the State Convention. Form can be found on www.illinoisknights.org. Vivat Jesus,

In the beginning, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney and his fellow Knights “passed the hat” to benefit widows and orphans. From that humble start, the Order has grown to include top-rated life insurance, long-term care insurance and retirement products. With more than $92 billion of insurance in force and a full-time field force of more than 1,400 serving our members and their families, we are proudly fulfilling Fr. McGivney’s vision. The best way to learn about our products is by arranging a visit with a local field agent. Your agent can custom design an insurance program to meet your current needs, help you plan for the future or simply explain the many fraternal benefits that come with membership. Next time a field agent visits you council let him know you would like to hear more
