Il Bollettino

Last summer, the John Felice Rome Center hosted its inaugural film festival, showing student-produced films to a standing-room only crowd and to great acclaim. Rick Martini,

the film-making professor at the JFRC, gave his students a bit of advice during the 2008 summer session, “Make it factual, make it entertaining, and not least of all, make it spark the audience’s interest.” Following those instructions, the six films created by 10 students in just a few short weeks exceeded every expectation.

Covering topics ranging from a profile of Professor Sergio Corsi in “Monkey Business” to a day in the life of a pizza, “La Pizza Vita,” each film found a unique way to tell its story. “La Pizza Vita” used only music and

Through the words of those he has moved, “Pater Noster” illustrated the effect Father Chandler has had on the students, faculty, and staff of the JFRC during his tenure.

A junior at Saint Louis University and a business marketing major, Annie recently returned from her spring 2008 semester at the JFRC and is the newest class captain Q. How did you find out about the JFRC?

A. Some of my friends from SLU went and said they would do anything to go back there again. I was nervous

about spending a whole semester there, and the language barrier, but as soon as I arrived, I felt at

home.

Q: What was your favorite experience?

A: One of my favorite memories is of our trip to Tunisia. It was so well organized and such a great opportunity to go somewhere in Africa. We camped overnight in the Sahara, rode

camels, and even met up with some Tunisian law students. It was a great opportunity to

meet people from other parts of the world.

Q: Why did you choose to stay connected with the JFRC?

A: I was invited to be class president, as a liaison between my class, the JFRC, and the other alumni. The JFRC is something I feel strongly about and I want to stay involved to keep our class together and to stay connected with this place that has had such a large impact on my life.

D e A R F R I e n D S , This August marked another exciting school year at the John Felice Rome Center. Through each new class, I see the mission of our dear founder, John Felice, being fulfilled.

This past September I attended the launch gala of Partner: The Campaign for the Future of Loyola. The most remarkable part of the evening was seeing how many loyal supporters came

to celebrate what is the most ambitious campaign in the history of Loyola University Chicago and the Loyola University Health System. The John Felice Rome Center, naturally, is a very important part of the campaign’s goals.

It seems fitting to me that Loyola has chosen “Partner” as the theme of the current campaign. now is our chance to truly be partners in supporting the legacy John Felice established and to ensure that all of the students who come to Rome have a life-changing experience.

In the upcoming months I hope I have the pleasure of meeting even more of you as you travel here to Rome and I attend events in states across the country. Thank you for your support and encouragement—together we can keep the flame that links us in love and peace alive through the JFRC.

May God bless you and keep you and your families always,

Emilio Iodice Vice President and Director, John Felice Rome Center

A s you know, the Società di Donatori is comprised of alumni and friends of the JFRC who are dedicated to preserving its legacy. This group has grown

tremendously over the years and we are happy to announce that, as of July of this year, we have expanded the Società di Donatori to include more levels and more options for its current and potential members, including levels for young alumni.

To become a member, look for your letter in the mail in the coming months, or make your gift online at LUC.edu/JFRCgiving. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Robin Miller, annual giving officer, at [email protected] or 312.915.6363.

Thank you all for your continued support, and with your help, we look forward to future successes this fiscal year!

JFRC alumni and friends gathered at Piper Hall on October 16 for an evening of friendly conversation and delightful wines. The purpose of the event was to recognize and thank all of the members of the Società di Donatori. This vital group represents the most generous and dedicated supporters of the JFRC.

A special “thanks” goes out to Dave Bruni (JFRC Spring ’97, JFRC Alumni Board) and Oyster Bay Wines for donating the wine for the event. If you weren’t able to attend, no worries! We’re making this an annual event.

See you there next year!

ciao from the Development office

Donations to general operating, scholarship, endowments, and travel funds have been invaluable in making the JFRC a fixture in Rome. In fiscal year 2008, 787 alumni and friends of the JFRC contributed over $342,000 to various JFRC initiatives. You helped raise over $53,000 for the John P. and Mary K. Felice Endowed Scholarship, over $46,000 for Forza Roma, and over $81,000 for class scholarships in fiscal year 2008. We had a great year and are incredibly grateful for all the JFRC alumni and friends who participated.

we extend our deepest appreciation for all those alumni and friends who are members of the società di donatori. We have listed the 2008 members in recognition of their outstanding support and generosity and for helping to lead the campaign for the JFRC.

Please note: As The Forum did not run in the spring ’08 issue, these are the class notes from both the spring and fall of 2008.

shooshan (Boyrazian) Kechichian (JFRC spring ’99/BA Loyola University Chicago ’00), a senior consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton in Washington DC, was recently married in Chicago to Etienne Kechichian, a consultant at the World Bank, where the couple met. She continues to take Italian language lessons.

isabella (Brzozka) snider (JFRC spring ’96) married John Snider on May 19, 2007, in Wilmington, Delaware. In attendance were five of her closest friends, jaclyn (Bova) volpe, megan (matthews) cordoma, philip hoog, richard ionata, and john ruggiero, all classmates whom she befriended at the John Felice Rome Center in the spring of ‘96. After 11 years, she still cherishes her time at the JFRC and feels so fortunate to have created lifelong friendships from the experience.

marilyn niznik calik (JFRC fall ’04/BS Loyola University Chicago ’05) and michael calik (JFRC fall ’04/BS Loyola University Chicago ’05) were married on September 22, 2007. Marilyn and Michael have known each other since high school, but it was not until their studies at the John Felice Rome Center that their romance began. They spent a three week honeymoon traveling to Italy, Slovenia, and Poland (where they visited Michael’s family). Their time in Italy included a nostalgic visit to the JFRC.
