Every year at International Day at IICS, anyone and everyone with goods to display and sell are invited to show-off their produce. This year was no different, with many wonderful and enticing things to choose from. This year’s bazaar was a great success: it had a wide variety of buying options, including paintings, jewellery, and clothes. The pottery, paintings, and the jewellery were all handmade products, thus making every piece authentic and unique. The bazaar was run by parents of IICS, and by the look of it, they were doing an excellent job of selling everything. Although not a lot of students seemed interested, the parents were fascinated by the sales. There were a few community and service projects that were part of this bazaar such as Project Nepal, who were selling handmade clothing articles. The Patik Project was also involved in the bazaar, having created a wide range of traditional clothes. All of the projects that were involved in this bazaar sold some very impressive products at reasonable prices. While being entertaining and of high quality, all products also had a cultural or historical background, thus providing the buyer with an insight into society. PERFORMERS

International Day entertainment was one of the main highlights of the day. There was a small stage in the corner of the lower gym. There were many classes who performed the events, and also students performing events on their own behalf. The events mostly consisted of songs, although there were other dances and such events throughout the day.

Like other components of the event, stage and equipment had to be ready for when the day begun. Two technicians were busy early on in the day preparing the sound system for the microphones, which, as we all know, often has a few problems at our school.

There were many performces throughout the day. It started of with a performance from the Secondary Choir Group singing “Cups” and “We are the world”. Next up was the secondary band performing, “Libertango”. These two performances set the stage for Exploratory band alongside Caroline, Rou, and Yasemin Uskan, singing “Viva la Vida” from Coldplay. Followed by Alex, Halim and Alin performing “Waka Waka”.

Up next was the Grade 8 music class performing “Jump, Jive, and wail”. Then there was a Flamenco dance from Mira Modley followed by a teacher performance staring Nicola Pryor, Alex Varannes, and Filippos Geragidis, performing “Streets of London”. Next was Jasmehar with a dance. Then a Ukelele duet from Mike & Lucy Wrigglesworth. The performances continued with another dance from Krishna singh, followed by another song from Hetal Singh. They were followed by a dance from Prithikaa and Lydia Wulkan and the Falkestrom family singing Uncover.

The next performance was an Indian dance from Ayushi Pakash. Next up was Kooje Voogt and friends singing the “hip-hop song” Followed by Lukas Schilk with “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”. Then “Ankara’nin Tasina Bak”, a Turkish song performed by the Grade 7 music class. Tanisha Booler performed a dance. Mir Ayman Garof performed “Genceden Gelirem”, an Azerbeijan song. This was followed with a dance from Priya’s husband and two other dancers. The day ended with a special performance from Grade 11 IB music performing “The Irish Washerwoman”.

Students spent a lot of time afterschool, rehearsing their parts to make this day a success. Yannis said “the group practiced afterschool and sometimes even during school”.

The day was a success and although at times the performers were a bit behind schedule, they caught up in the end. A lot of practice went into the production of this event, and it certainly showed off IICS’s student’s dedication and many skills. If they choose to take their passions further, our community wishes them success in whatever they may pursue in the future.

The 2013 IICS International day had a new addition to its large list of activities: the petting zoo. Although it wasn’t quite what people expected it to be, it was an interesting activity to watch. The petting zoo consisted of a horse and a dog brought by K9 Stable and Kennel. This is also the place used by the school for the primary horse activities. The dog was amusing the crowd by showing a multitude of tricks and demonstrating how to be a guard dog. Meanwhile, the horse and its rider performed some gait transitions such as walk, trot and canter, as well as executing some small jumps. Though the petting zoo was smaller than expected, the idea was nice and can be worked with. Possibly for future years, some more hands-on activities could take place, such as petting animals like rabbits of guinea pigs.

Thank you to the organizers of the petting zoo!

The Animal Welfare Group is holding a fundraising event to create awareness about street animals in and around Istanbul. Anyone in the IICS community is welcome to participate.

Students are required to pay 3TL for each submission and adults will pay 5TL for each photo that they submit. This money will be used to help the street animals requiring veterinary care (we will be working with ‘Cihangir Cool for Cats’) and to buy supplies to build cat shelters for the street cats.

Please send photos to the following:

As Maria Callas, an American-born Greek soprano opera singer, once said, “An opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down.” This is true for International Day as well. The IICS staff’s input was vital to make the day what it was, and they need to be recognized for the outstanding job they did. The staff, with their effort, hard work, and enthusiasm, created a comfortable and sound atmosphere for the student and parents to enjoy.

Security played a major role in enabling the smooth running of the day. They let in over 600 families and students and 500 cars and buses. “I did not have to wait at all at the gate”, a parent stated. The security goes through a process of checking under the cars with mirrors to prevent potentially dangerous situations from arising. They did this for the whole day, thus providing the attendants with a safe environment.

While security was taking care of safety, Mitur was organizing the buses. With their help, all buses arrived on time and provided space for everyone. This efficient solution helped students get home without parents having to drive out to the school. Ms. Zeynep also had a large contribution to the success of the day, organizing the staff, leading the build-up, and selling tokens.

Ms. Gokmen, in charge of public relations, recorded and promoted International Day using the school’s Facebook page. Over 1,300 people contribute to the page, and it enjoys around 800 visitors per month. Ms. Gokmen posted over 500 photos of International Day and allowed parents and teachers to promote their tables. The French table took advantage of this and presented their recipes and instructions in a video format on the page. Ms. Gokmen also designed all of the banners and posters used to advertise the day, using only recycled material in the process. When asked if she enjoyed her job, she stated “Oh yes. Definitely. I have the best job here, no question about it.”

People see students, parents, and teacher enjoying themselves. They congratulate each other for their successes, and celebrate fittingly. However, the ones who contributed the most are rarely seen or thanked. It is time to thank the people who give up their time to provide the school’s community with a gratifying experience through fastidious effort.

Thank you very much to all of IICS’ staff who made International Day what it was!

PLAY PICTURES

As the lights go out, the last of the people shuffle in. Silence. The spotlights on the stage go on, and the play officially begins. This dynamic start was kept up for the whole night, providing everyone with high quality entertainment through two well-done school theatre productions.

The two school plays, A Turkish Comedia and The Real Inspector Hound, directed by Dr. Gary Percival, were both huge comedic successes. The Real Inspector Hound, the DP play, was a comedy thriller using slapstick humor. There is a play within the play, with two theatre critics commenting on the play the whole time. The play within the play is set in England in the 1940’s, in a large mansion. There is a love drama between the characters as Simon Gascoigne, a stranger, has an affair with Felicity, a young girl visiting the mansion. However, Simon loves Cynthia, the owner of the mansion who is still mourning for her late husband Albert. Then there is Major Magnus, a wheel chair ridden major who showed up from Canada after being presumed dead. He also loves Cynthia, but Cynthia refuses everyone due to her husband’s death. Finally, there is the housekeeper: an old seemingly forgetful woman who is obsessed with fate and the weather. At the end of the play, the play within the play and the actual play blends into one, causing disarray and murder. At the end, Major Magnus informs everyone that he is both Inspector Hound and Cynthia’s late husband, and that all the other inspectors were impostors. The radio is suddenly turned on, and a police announcement sounds, stating that Inspector Hound has returned to the precinct and the search was called off. The play ends on this note of a blood-curdling mystery.

The Real Inspector Hound was a very high-quality performance. The play, partially written by Dr. Percival, provided the audience with high-class comedy and suspense. The exclamation “What? It’s over?! But I want to know who it was!” could be heard from multiple audience members. The play surpassed any and all expectations. Congratulations to the cast of The Real Inspector Hound!

The second play, A Turkish Comedia, is also a slapstick comedy. Set in 17th century Istanbul, it starts with an interaction between Doktor Bey, the esteemed doctor, and Pantalon Bey, an old bitter man. Doktor Bey grants Pantalon the hand of his daughter in marriage after finding out that Pantalon is rich. Soon the other characters are introduced: there is Zor Zeynep Hanim, the doctor’s scary wife, Ahmet, the wayward servant of Pantalon’s son, and Guvercin, the doctor’s assistant and Ahmet’s lover. There is Zorba, the threatening ‘big man’ of the city, Bomba, the extravagant dancer. After chaos and confusion spreads, life looks hopeless for the lovers. However, as Shakespeare wrote, “all’s well that ends well”, and in the end, everything is resolved.

The play was a major success, earning many laughs throughout the night. Congratulations to the Turkish Comedia cast and directory!

When everyone is finished with the games, performances, and activities on International Day, they get tired and hungry. Obviously, food and drink is a pivotal part of keeping up the high spirits of the attendees.

The parents, friends, and teachers of IICS get together and decide on countries. They bring a national or multiple different kinds of common and uncommon foods that keep people wanting more. This year there were 22 countries in total. Out of all the

countries there were three winners who gained the most tokens. The Korean table, who generously gave a couple of the reporters some food to test out, is in first place with 1560TL. Belgium came in second with 1,542TL due to their very tasty fries and amazing home made waffles. Finally in third place was the UK with 1,337TL. All of the countries involved made a huge effort to create a happy and maybe not super healthy environment for people of all ages.

Many thanks should be awarded to a couple of people who made all of this a good and happy event. Debbie Kobayashi was the main organizer for food as well as the promoter on Facebook and posters. Along with her, there were many people in the cleaning staff who made sure to collect all of the dishes and clean them for more use in the future.

Thank you for the staff, parents, and students who contributed to the food court!

This year during International Day the upper gym provided free games for entertainment. Various Community and Service groups hosted the games. Games during international day have been a long ongoing tradition at IICS, but this year the school took a brand new approach on the matter.

The activities were free this year: this was a decision made by teachers and C&S coordinators. When asked why, Mr. Herrmann, math and science teacher, replied, “It was getting too competitive”. He said that in previous years, when participation in each game cost a certain number of tokens, stations were giving away more tokens to the winners and making people pay less to enter. This undermined the original purpose of the groups, as the money that was supposed to be raised for charity was becoming a method of ranking C&S groups. Students this year, however, think somewhat differently about the effects of making

the games free. A secondary student, who prefers to remain anonymous, stated that: “Because the C&S groups were not earning money this year, people did not put much effort into international day games. Because of this a lot of the games were boring and did not seem too interesting. Also, not many people were up at the games stands this year.”

Despite this, many students said they enjoyed themselves. James Symes remarked that it gave him “something to do”.

Miss Zaza, the coordinator, was also quite pleased about the event. She said that everything seemed to be going as planned. She also said that people came and went at different stages, and at some points the room would be packed, and others it would practically be empty.

All together, students, parents, and teachers provided a legion of mixed feelings about the event. Some thought there was room for improvement, while others thought it was a huge success. What did you think?
