Main problems in fuel systems... Particles contamination: • Erosion • Sand blasting • Grinding

Water contaminations: •Corrosion: There is a significant problem with water in fuel oil. Water produces abrasive rust which wears on surfaces, block clearances and break off to damage moving parts.

•Cavitations in fuel pumps: Water droplets collapse under the pressure in the pump, producing high forces which “eats away” the pump wheels

•Wear on injectors: the high velocity through injectors creates “blasting” with water droplets and the high pressure make water implosions (cavitation) resulting in high wear rates

•Microbial Growth: Negative consequences include rancid foul odours, human health problems, biomass slimes, foaming and clogging of fuel filters and small passages

MGO fuel, filter inserts change after 21 months 5000 tons of fuel purified.



Filter change after 21 months Time to change inserts: 90 minutes

MDO type DMB: Water= 626 mg/kg Contaminants = 0.0024 %Wt



MV Union Gold, review after 18 months of operation (July2011): CJC Separator PTU1, filter insert change on Jan2011 after 12 months of operation. Average usage of fuel on board is 25.000 liters per 2 trips (10/11days). Estimated amount of fuel pumped through the CJC unit in one year= 365/11 x 25.000L= 829.545L ≈ 800m³. MV Hercules XVI 3x CAT3516 each 1491kW Max total fuel consumption 1290 L/h



Happy chief engineer: “always clean and dry fuel in the day tank, no problems”. CJC Separator PTU3: filter insert change in average every 11 months.



MV Fairplay 26 ...

Tug boat Fairplay 26, docking due to fuel problems diesel bugs.



Pumping all fuel out of the tanks into 20 feet tank containers ashore.



DB tanks and side tanks are all fouled with bacteria manual cleaning and chemical decontamination, flushing of all fuel lines afterwards.



Microbial growth in fuel tanks (diesel bugs) ...

Bacteria colonies settling in the in-line filters. Main cause of microbial growth: water in tanks habitat.



OPEX of CJC Separator... Dimensioning of CJC Separator for one or two filter inserts change per year: - Filter inserts - Packing sets - Manual labor, low tech. - Waist disposal of saturated inserts
