October Newsle-er In the game of tennis, I have always been (though never accomplished) a singles player. It is only recently that I have discovered my age and condi?on may not allow for this any longer. This means I must acquire a new skill set. A skill set that I am reluctant to embrace, doubles. Dagnabbit I like overseeing my play and if I make a mistake it rests squarely upon my shoulders. Now, I must rely on someone else and they must rely on me. I find this awkward and uncomfortable, but if I am to con?nue playing the game, this is how I must acquiesce. I find this teamwork of two’s to be par?cularly relevant to the Gospel. Jesus con?nually reminds us that we are not to do ministry alone. He sent his people out by two’s, he promises that when two or three are gathered in his name, he will be with them. We are called to teamwork in accomplishing our goals. Now we are called to teamwork in seKng our goals. We have begun the process of crea?ng our 2018 budget. We ask that the commi-ee teams look back on the superla?ve work you have accomplished in 2017, and dream of what you can create for mission of the church in 2018. Our giQs of ?me and talent and treasure are what we present to God every Sunday during the sacrificial offering. The offering is placed on the altar/table to be consecrated along with the giQs of bread and wine, it is a part of the giQs we offer to God. We offer the symbols of our labor. Bread symbolizing the plan?ng, harves?ng and making of food. Wine the symbol of the fruits of ?me and labor making drink, and money symbolizing what we work hard to earn for God and ourselves. We bundle these symbols in a musical offering in thanksgiving of our God given crea?vity, and the representa?ves of the people, bring them forth. These things we offer to God in thanksgiving of what God gives to us, and God gives them back to us as the Church and Communion with Christ. This is my theology of stewardship. This theology is incumbent on teamwork, much like the early Church where people of differing abili?es gave to bring the Kingdom of God into to the world, we too have these abili?es to give. To accomplish these missions, we ask everyone on the Indian Hill team to contribute what you feel is sacrificial. I am asking you to help us raise the $700,000 we have set for our stewardship campaign this year. In the near future we will all be geKng more informa?on about this important part of living into Church and Gods Kingdom. George + 2017 Our Vision Growing spiritually together in an open dialogue. October is Stewardship Month!

This year we celebrate the theme of "Growing Together, Generation to Generation" rejoicing in our church's continued growth in membership, programs and activities, as well as our growth in church leadership.  During the past year we have welcomed Rev. George Sherrill as our Episcopal rector and Phil Clary as our new Music Director, joining our Presbyterian pastor, Rev. Stephen Caine, and Jennifer Taylor, Director of Children's and Family Ministry.  The money we pledge during this campaign will help fund next year's worship and music programs, children's ministries, outreach programs, and building maintenance, as well as the compensation of our talented staff.  To do this and to keep our church "Growing Together, " we must reach this year's campaign goal of $700,000.

Kick-off Sunday is October 1.  During the next few weeks, you will hear from families who have made the Indian Hill Church their church home for two and three generations as they share their reasons for giving to the annual Stewardship Campaign.

Commitment Sunday will be held on Sunday, October 22.  Please plan to attend worship, at either 8:00 or 10:30 on that Sunday, to bring your pledge card to the altar as an act of worship.  If you cannot attend that day, you may mail your pledge card to the church office or make your pledge online by going to the church website, www.indianhillchurch.org., and using the DONATE button.

A Stewardship Celebration will be held on Sunday, October 22, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Guild Hall.  Every member of the congregation is invited to this festive evening, with a live band, food, and drink for adults and separate activities for children. Please plan to attend this fall celebration, to greet old friends and to make new acquaintances, in a relaxed party setting.

IHN AT IHC!

As the warm days of summer were coming to an end over Labor Day weekend, we were blessed with four special families for our IHN host week. Emily, Breanna 11, and Branden age 3, Leigha and Bob and their three children Mia 4, Brayden 2, and Brody 15 months, Vinisha, Nya 16 and Jaasia 12, Lyondra and Alton La’kyah 6, and Kaylee 3. Later in the week Sylvia and Destiny age 16 came when Lyondra and Alton found permanent housing. On Thursday Candice and Joe arrived with their 5 month old baby, Prentiss, whom they adored. The families received welcoming baskets of personal care articles made by the Sunday school classes. They also made lovely banners for the downstairs hallways with the names of the families on them.

On Labor Day Susie and TJ Ackermann treated everyone to a great cookout that our guests and hosts loved!. For dessert Vinisha was surprised with a birthday cake presented to her by her daughters. She was so touched that we knew it was her birthday. On Tuesday Larry Bennett brought his therapy dog “Frye” to the delight of the children. On Friday the Indian Hill and Madeira Fire Department came to our parking lot so the kids could see everything up close. All the children received fire hats, and they asked lots of questions about the equipment. The firemen let them put on some of the equipment and sit in the truck. (See photos on bulletin board) Framed family photos were given to each of the families on Sunday before they left.

What really made our week special was the Youth from our church and the community who came each evening to help with the children. Many were there every night. They helped us set up for dinner and after dinner organized games in the library and took the children out to the playground. The swings and the lift truck in the sand were favorites. For most of the week the weather was great, but on cool evenings Uno and Head Bands were played in the library. Leigha was the big Uno winner. On Sunday morning Kate Lewis, Cynthia Zhang, James Orr and Antonio Vega Torres cane early to say goodbye to the families.

We had 100 volunteers help us during the week. In addition, the church staff was wonderful. Traci and Ela were helpful in daily updating the volunteer lists, Bill Koons helped with both the set-up and take down of the beds and tables in the Guild Hall. He also organized our IHN groceries in the kitchen so they were easy to reach. Stephen was again an overnight host, and he and George never failed to mention our upcoming host week on Sundays during the service.

Holly and I thank all the volunteers for making this week special in the life of our church. We could not do this Outreach without your help.
