IGP and USGC co-hosted the Nigerian Feed Manufacturing short course Oct. 6-9. Heiko Koster, USGC’s consultant from South Africa, led the group which consisted of nine participants from Nigeria and one from Ghana.

Participants attended lectures on topics ranging from feed manufacturing techniques and processes to nutritional value and feed ration formulations. During the course, participants were also able to tour Tyson’s feed mill in Sedalia, Mo., and the Cargill Nutrena feed mill in Kansas City, Kan., as well as visit the Kansas City Board of Trade.

Oludare Usman Bello, course participant from the Integrated Dairy Farm Ltd. in Nigeria found the course to be very helpful and educational. “This was an eye-opening experience in feed processing,”

he said. “I learned a great deal about the different types of processes that have evolved from feed, feed formulation and combinations. I learned about how important the selection of inputs is in our feed processing and productivity.”

Purchasing short course Oct. 19-23. Fourteen participants from SE Asia, including Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia, and one from the U.S. attended the short course. The group was led by Shellen Ng, USGC program manager in Malaysia.

During the short course, participants attended lectures, toured the East Kansas Agri-Energy Plant in Garnett, Kan., and went on a farm field trip. Lecture topics included grain grading, U.S. grain production, marketing and export systems, futures, acting on market signals and ocean freight.

Ed B. Hidalgo, course participant and managing director from Feedmate Nutrition, Inc. in the Philippines said, “Because of this course, I can now be analytical in my decisions of when to buy. U.S. Wheat Associates conducts crop quality seminars for buyers and flour millers around the world each year. These seminars provide the most current data on the quality of the current wheat crop as well as guidance and assistance in purchasing and processing U.S. wheat.

Dr. Rebecca Miller, director of the Kansas Wheat Quality Laboratory, participated in the 2009 Crop Quality Seminars in Central America. Miller presented crop quality data for the 2009 hard red winter and soft red winter wheat classes. She also answered questions related to HRW and SRW wheat and flour quality, baking and other general cereal chemistry issues. Seminars were presented to nine different groups in the countries of the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

IGP and USGC collaborated to hold the USGC Mediterranean DDGS & Sorghum Feed workshop Oct. 28-30. Mustapha El Youssoufi, USGC consultant from Morocco, led the group of six participants who were from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.

During the workshop, participants attended lectures at IGP’s Conference Center on topics ranging from storing sorghum and DDGS to creating livestock feed formulations using sorghum and DDGS. Participants also toured the East Kansas Agri-Energy Ethanol Plant, Countryside Feeds, LLC of Hillsboro, Kan., Heartland Jerseys Inc. and Rokies Holstein Dairy in Seneca, Kan.

Dusti Fritz, the National Sorghum Checkoff ’s western states field services director, said, “This group was exciting because it had many new generation representatives that didn’t know a lot about sorghum, which exemplifies why it is important to facilitate this type of course. It really gives us the opportunity to teach the basics about sorghum, how to use it, and how to buy it.”

“We had all sectors of the animal agricultural industry represented in our curriculum so we could meet the needs of all participants by showing them how sorghum can be used in feed rations for many different types of species,” Fritz said.
