July 24, 2016 - Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” LK 11:9

Pope Explains the Importance of "Our" in Lord's PrayerCatholic News ServiceWhen Christians address God as "our Father," they acknowledge that God created and loves them, but they also recognize that all people are their brothers and sisters, Pope Francis said."We have a Father who is very close to us, who embraces us," the pope said June 20 during the homily at his early morning Mass in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where he lives.Commenting on the Gospel of Matthew's presentation of the Lord's Prayer, Pope Francis said it begins with a recognition of the God who created each person, loves each one and knows what each one needs."To whom do I pray? To 'almighty God'? No, he is too far away" and remote, the pope said. And the nebulous "cosmic God" who seems so popular today is not personal enough. "You must pray to the Father. 'Father' is a strong word," the pope said. "You must pray to one who generated you and gave you life." At the same time, he said, Christians don't say "my Father," but "our Father because I am not an only child, none of us is."Pope Francis said people cannot think they are coming honestly to God in prayer and addressing him truly as "our Father" if they are angry or are holding grudges against someone. "If I am not at peace with my brothers," he said, "I cannot say 'Father' to him."In the day's Gospel selection, the passage includes the Lord's Prayer, but concludes with Jesus telling the disciples: "If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.""You cannot pray with enemies in your heart," the pope said. "Jesus has promised us the Holy Spirit. He will teach us, from within, from the heart, how to say 'Father' and how to say 'our.'"

Pope Francis: Prayer Is Not Simply Saying WordsLauren Cater/CNA, 2013In a daily Mass, Pope Francis touched on the importance of prayer and forgiveness in the life of a Christian, warning against common attitudes that “close the door” to God.“The Lord tells us: ‘The first task in life is this: prayer.’ But not the

prayer of words, like a parrot; but the prayer of the heart: gazing on the Lord, hearing the Lord, asking the Lord,” said the Holy Father during his homily.Pope Francis celebrated his daily Mass in the Santa Marta guesthouse of the Vatican, where he chose to reside shortly after he was elected as Bishop of Rome. The Pope centered his reflections on the prophet Jonah from the first reading of the day and on Martha from the Gospel narrative, stating that both characters are united by a similar problem: neither of them knew how to pray.Recounting the story of sisters Mary and Martha in the Gospel reading, the Holy Father said that when Martha asked Jesus to have Mary get up and serve, Mary chose the “better part,” meaning “that of prayer, that of the contemplation of Jesus.”“To the eyes of the sister, this was time lost; it even seemed, perhaps, a bit of a fantasy,” he said, “But who wants that? The Lord: ‘This is the better part,’ because Mary heard the Lord and prayed with her heart.”When coming from the heart, “we

know that prayer works miracles,” he emphasized, reflecting on how the Lord delivered the people of Nineveh after Jonah had preached to them about the imminent destruction of the city. The inhabitants were saved, he noted, because they believed the words of the prophet and were converted, “and from the greatest to the least called upon the Divine forgiveness with all their strength.”

BISHOP GALLEGOS The Process of Sainthood of Bishop Gallegos made a step forward to his Canonization. As you may be aware there are five stages to this process. The first stage started in 2005 when the bishop of Sacramento submitted the petition to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints for their consideration. The second stage happened when the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 2008 accepted it and began their own investigation of his life. The fact of accepting the cause declared him a “Servant of God.” The third stage started last July 8th, 2016, when Pope Francis authorized the Congregation to promulgate a decree recognizing the heroic virtues of Servant of God Alfonse Gallegos of the Order of Augustinian Recollects. The decree entitled him to be recognized and called “Venerable.”The fourth stage will take place after a miracle through his intercession is approved. The miracle is usually a healing. The healing has to be instantaneous, permanent, and complete while also being scientifically unexplainable. If

this is the case, the person is beatified as “Blessed.”The Fifth and final stage is the recognition of a second miracle. The confirmation of a second miracle goes through the same scrutiny as the first. Once the miracle is confirmed, then he will be canonized as “Saint.”

LIVING THE GOSPEL OF LIFEMY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR YOUBy Greg SchleppenbachAI was privileged to attend the 2016 National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. The keynote speaker was His Eminence Robert Cardinal Sarah who currently heads the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments. The Cardinal's talk and life story can inspire all who work to spread the Gospel of Life. In 1979, at the age of thirty-four, Fr. Sarah was appointed by Pope John Paul II as Archbishop of Conakry, in the West African nation of Guinea. Eighty-five percent of the people were Muslim and the Church was oppressed by a Marxist dictator, Sekou Toure, who had imprisoned the sitting Archbishop.Feeling troubled and unprepared to carry out this important role, Father Sarah expressed his desire to decline the appointment. But that was not an option for Pope John Paul II.Putting his faith in God, Father Sarah accepted the appointment and chose as his episcopal motto, "Sufficit tibi gratia mea" ("My grace is sufficient for you"). These words, from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians (2 Cor 12:9), are our Lord's response to St. Paul's pleas to be freed from the "thorn" of persistent trial and temptation. After assuring Paul of his sufficient grace, our Lord offered this seemingly paradoxical reason: "for power is made perfect in weakness." Then St. Paul embraced the path of weakness with bold faith: "I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ, for when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Cor 12:10).

Following his episcopal motto, Cardinal Sarah courageously took every opportunity to speak truth to power, challenging Sekou Toure's oppression and injustices. Archbishop Sarah's actions put him at the top of the dictator's assassination list. While his courage in the face of life-threatening persecution is inspiring enough, it is even more impressive given his persistent feelings of inadequacy as Archbishop. He even considered resigning his post. In his book, God or Nothing, Cardinal Sarah explains how "hundreds of hours of prayer" led him to conclude that "the worst that could happen to me was death; my life was nothing compared to the blatant injustices, the horrible poverty, and the unspeakable horrors that I saw each day. I had to speak, even if my life was at stake."At the close of his speech, Cardinal Sarah provided "three humble suggestions" to guide us. First, be prophetic. "Where there is no vision, discernment, the people perish" (Proverbs 29, 18). Second, be faithful. "Proclaim the truth and do not be silent through fear" (St. Catherine of Siena). And third, pray. The words and example of Cardinal Sarah provide needed inspiration and encouragement to all who battle the culture of death and who may sometimes feel inadequate for the work and inclined to give up. Let us keep God's words to St. Paul always before us as we work to proclaim the Gospel of Life: "My grace is sufficient for you!"Greg Schleppenbach is Associate Director at the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Breaking Open the Word

– 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time –Readings: Genesis 18:20-32 • Psalm 138:1-8 • Colossians 2:12-14 • Luke 11:1-13

OVERVIEW: The readings this week focus on mercy, prayer and forgiveness. The first reading is about the famous story of Sodom and Gomorrah – names immediately associated with moral depravity and decadence. Abraham pleads with God to spare the unfortunate citizens of those cities which are about to be destroyed because of pervasive evil. Justice demands that evil be punished, but God’s justice is tempered by his even greater mercy. For the sake of ten good people, he tells Abraham, he will not destroy the cities. God is teaching Abraham (and us) about justice and mercy so that he will develop a heart attuned to God. He’s also teaching Abraham how to pray. The fact that there weren’t even ten righteous souls is meant to underscore just how decadent Sodom and Gomorrah were. In the second reading Paul explains how justice and mercy come together in Christ, and how we are the beneficiaries of that union. Buried with Christ in baptism, we have died to sin and through him have been raised to new life in God. Walking in the newness of Christ’s life, then, we imitate him who has forgiven all our sins “by nailing them to the cross.” The cross is powerful symbol of God’s justice and mercy: justice because it rightly punished sin; mercy because Christ, the Son of God, accepted the punishment on behalf of the human race. In the gospel reading the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. The Lord responds by teaching them the Our Father, which is “the summary of the whole gospel” (Catechism, no. 2761). In teaching the disciples to call God “Father” he invites them to participate in his own filial relationship of intimacy, which is the foundation of the Christian life. At the heart of the prayer is forgiveness. God’s mercy can penetrate our hearts only if we have learned to forgive those who trespass against us. The key word in this part of the prayer is the tiny adverb “as.” Learning how to forgive others as we ourselves have been forgiven by God in Christ, is no small feat. In fact, it is humanly impossible. Only through Christ, in the Holy Spirit, can we truly forgive as we have been forgiven. In view of how difficult forgiving others really is, Jesus stresses the importance of persistence in prayer, particularly with respect to this aspect of forgiving others.

Key verse: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” [Lk. 11:4]

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: “Since Abraham, intercession—asking on behalf of another—has been characteristic of a heart attuned to God's mercy. In the age of the Church, Christian intercession participates in Christ's, as an expression of the communion of saints. In intercession, he who prays looks "not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others," even to the point of praying for those who do him harm.” [no. 2635]

POPE FRANCIS: "Jesus urges us to pray and “not to lose heart”. We all go through times of tiredness and discouragement, especially when our prayers seem ineffective. But Jesus assures us: God promptly answers his children, even though this doesn’t mean he will necessarily do it when and how we would like. Prayer does not work like a magic wand! It helps us keep faith in God, and to entrust ourselves to him even when we do not understand his will. The object of prayer is of secondary importance; what matters above all is his relationship with the Father. This is what prayer does: it transforms the desire and models it according to the will of God, whatever that may be, because the one who prays aspires first of all to union with God, who is merciful Love.” [General Audience, 05.25.16]

LIFE APPLICATION: The Our Father is recited so often and so routinely that it’s easy to overlook just how demanding it really is. Prayer is hard because what it demands of us is hard. That’s why Jesus urges us to be persistent: to ask, seek and knock until we receive what God really wants to give us: namely, a heart attuned to his heart. If prayer is hard, forgiving others is even harder. Forgiving others, especially those who aren’t sorry and haven’t asked us for forgiveness, like those who crucified the Lord, is perhaps the hardest thing to do as human beings, and yet that is what we are called to do, which is why persistence, and patience, are such important virtues. We demonstrate mercy, love and forgiveness largely through our patience. As one of the Church Fathers said, commenting on 1 Corinthians 13, if you don’t have patience, you don’t really love the way Christ loves, because “love is patient.” He notes, however, that evil also is patient, which is why the St. Paul immediately adds that love is “kind.”
