Filipenses 1: 6
On each Sunday of Advent, we celebrate one of four special gifts – hope, peace, joy and love – that are given to us as we wait for the Ultimate Gift on Christmas Day. The second week of Advent is about peace and how the peace that we long for is ultimately fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Welcoming Jesus into our homes and our hearts, full of peace, prepares us to properly celebrate His birth.
The birth of Jesus, the arrival of our savior, was foretold throughout history leading up to that glorious night in Bethlehem, and a reference to Christ as “Prince of Peace” can be found in the book of Isaiah: "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6).
What is peace? According to a dictionary, peace is a state of tranquillity, quiet, calm, freedom from civil disturbance; a state of security - being secure within a community; freedom from oppression, strife and disorder; in harmony in personal relations; untroubled by conflict, agitation or commotion.
The human heart and mind desire peace – need peace – and our Heavenly Father knows our every desire, and in His infinite love he provides for our every need, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all you heart" (Jeremiah 29:11-13). God's purpose is to give us peace, a future and a hope if we will listen to Him and trust Him.
Just before His crucifixion, Jesus said to his disciples, "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:27). How is it that Jesus could give His disciples "peace" when He was about to suffer on Calvary and His disciples were about to face the worst experience of their lives to that point? He could offer peace
WAITING FOR THE PRINCE OF PEACE
because he knew that just three days later, in the evening on the day of His resurrection, He would come and stand in the midst of His disciples and say to them, "Peace be with you.-- Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord" (John 20:19, 20).
Where can we find this peace? Throughout scripture there are many references that tell us that through Jesus we find peace. Jesus is our peace. "We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1). "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6, 7). "For He Himself is our peace… He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father" (Ephesians 2:14, 17, 18). By being our peace before God, Jesus has made peace among those who are in union with Him. To have Him is to have His peace that surpasses all understanding. This peace is not something that He gives apart from Himself. It is in Christ, and we receive it only by receiving Him.
Ironically, in this holy season of Advent where we wait for the arrival of the Prince of Peace, the contemporary, commercial manifestation of the season can rob us of the very peace we seek. The following words are from a song by Amy Grant that is a reminder of the need to keep our focus on the real “reason for the season.”
I Need A Silent Night
I need a silent night, a holy night To hear an angel voice Through the chaos and the noise I need a midnight clear, a little peace right here To end this crazy day with a silent night

This is the fifth year of this popular bible study program. The study will include a series of twenty-three videos presented by Jeff Cavins. Each video will be preceded by a lively group discussion. We will meet every Wednesday from 7pm to 8:30 in the Fine Arts building. After 23 sessions you will receive a certificate of completion.
Attendance is free. We will also provide materials. “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6
The good work that has begun in us is the love of Christ and the gift of generous hearts, that we may be better able to proclaim the gospel of Christ in word and deed. It is out of a profound love for our Lord and the deep respect we have for God, that we, the community of Holy Family, began the work of repairing, renovating and beautifying God’s house. Holy Family church is a place where we gather to celebrate the Father’s love for us through the sacraments, and our love for our Father through our worship and the good works we are called to accomplish in His name.
Our renovation project continues to move forward. The process is sometimes feels slow and tedious as we continue to take the necessary steps forward. We continue to meet with the art design group to more accurately define the vision of the renovation, and we are now entering the final phase of the process and should have a tangible product to present to the diocese for their approval. We are looking forward to receiving the estimate for the actual cost of the renovation within the next week. As we approach Christmas, we hope to be able to share with you the proposals we will present to Bishop Soto and the diocese for approval.
We are a community of God’s beloved children – we gather as the Body of Christ. We are concerned for each other and in a special way for the less fortunate in our community as we reach out to all in need. We need to continue working on our own conversion and praying for the conversion of others.
Christ came to testify to the truth of his Father’s love for all His children. Your random acts of kindness testify to that love. Your kindness and generosity are truly a blessing and are sincerely appreciated. We give thanks to God for helping us keep His church of Holy Family strong and full of life in our community. Together we can practice and carry on our Catholic Christian faith, passing on the beauty, the fullness, and the legacy of our faith to future generations. Please remember, as we approach the end of the year, any donation to Holy Family is tax deductible.
Thank you!
Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family The Journey of our Faith

Breaking Open the Word - Second Sunday of AdventReadings: Baruch 5:1-9 • Psalm 126:1-6 • Philippians 1:4-11 • Luke 3:1-6
OVERVIEW: Baruch was a companion and secretary of the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 32:12). His book was addressed to his fellow Jews living in exile in Babylon in the 6th century B.C. The first part of the book was written about five years after the conquest of Jerusalem and first deportation in 597 B.C. The second part, from which the first reading is taken, was probably composed some years later, near the end of the exile in 539 B.C. The first part recalls the reasons for Israel’s exile and focuses on the guilt of her people. The second part reassures them with words of comfort and restoration. Jerusalem was in ruins, forsaken, all her inhabitants gone. God’s word is addressed to the Holy City, telling her that soon her children would return home. “Look to the east” the prophet says, “and see your children gathered at the word of the Holy One.” Baruch’s words inspired great hope among the exiles. Their ordeal was about to end. Soon, God would bring them back to the Promised Land. St. Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians while he was in prison, probably in Rome or perhaps Ephesus. He had every reason to believe that he might be killed at any moment, and yet his words are full of joy and hope. The “day of Christ” – a phrase that appears in several other letters – refers to the Second Coming. For Christians, ‘the day of the Lord’ is nothing to fear. It’s something to look forward to for it represents the completion of ‘the good work which was begun in you.’ The gospel readings this week and next, focus on John the Baptist. John is the last of the prophets, the bridge between the Old and the New Testaments and a vital part of God’s plan of salvation. His mission was to prepare the way of the Lord by calling the people to repentance. John, in a sense, embodies the entire Old Testament which was a preparation for the coming of Christ.
Key verse: “Up, Jerusalem! Stand upon the heights; look to the east and see your children gathered from the east and the west at the word of the Holy One.” (Baruch 5:5)
CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: With John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit begins the restoration to man of ‘the divine likeness,’ prefiguring what he would achieve with and in Christ. John’s baptism was for repentance; baptism in water and the Spirit will be a new birth.” [no.720]
POPE FRANCIS: “This Sunday marks the second stage of the Season of Advent, a marvelous time which reawakens in us the expectation of Christ’s return and the memory of his historical coming. Today’s Liturgy presents us with a message full of hope. Today there is need for people to be witnesses to the mercy and tenderness of God, who spurs the resigned, enlivens the disheartened, ignites the fire of hope.” [Angelus, 12.07.14]
LIFE APPLICATION: Advent is a time of preparation, repentance and hope-filled anticipation. We prepare for the coming of the Lord by cleansing our soul in the sacrament of confession. It’s also a time to remember “Last Things” – the end of the world, final judgment and the new creation (Rev. 21:1). The end of one liturgical year dovetails with the start of a new year, which represents the passing away of the old order and the institution of a new order inaugurated by the Incarnation and Nativity of Jesus Christ. As Christians living in a world burdened by sin and sorrow, we stand, as it were, on the threshold between one reality which is passing away and the new reality manifested in Christ and his Church. We look forward, not back. As Jesus said, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:67). The eastward gaze depicted in the first reading, where Jerusalem looks to the east for her savior, is the basis for the traditional posture of the priest during Mass. Despite what some people think, he didn’t “have his back to the people.” Rather, he and the people together faced the same direction, looking forward, like the Jews of old, to the coming of the Messiah.
