December 30, 2018 - Feast of the Holy Family“Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God.” 1 Jn 3:1

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON CONTINUESChristmas Day is not the end of this great season – it's the beginning. The season continues with several great opportunities for worship and celebration…

HOLY FAMILYThe Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but about our own families, too. The main purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in general. Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the Church within our homes. Just how does one live out the Church in the family? The best way is by making Christ and his Church the center of family and individual life – reading scripture regularly, praying daily, attending Mass at least on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, imitating the actions of the Holy Family – all done together as a family. The Holy Family feast is a good time to remember the family unit and pray for our human and spiritual families. We also may take this feast to reflect on the value and sanctity of the family unit, and to evaluate our own family life. What ways may it be improved? What would Jesus, Mary, and Joseph do? Finally, we can use this feast to ask ourselves what are we doing to promote the family within our own cultures, neighborhoods, and communities.Holy Family Prayer: Father, We look to Your loving guidance and order as the pattern of all family life. By following the example of the holy family of your Son in mutual love and respect, may we come to the joy of our home in heaven.

MARY, MOTHER OF GODIn early church the title of Mary was a subject of much debate. Mary was called the mother of God, but some objected, suggesting that Mary was only the mother of Jesus' human nature, but not his divine nature. Ultimately the Church decided that Christ was fully God and fully human, and these natures were united in one person, Jesus Christ. Thus Mary could be called "mother of God" since she gave birth to Jesus who was fully divine as well as human. The Solemnity of Mary Mother of God falls exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave of Christmas. It is fitting to honor Mary as Mother of Jesus, following the birth of Christ. When Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God we are not only honoring Mary, who was chosen among all women throughout history to bear God incarnate, but we are also honoring our Lord, who is fully God and fully human. Calling Mary "mother of God" is the highest honor we can give Mary. Just as Christmas honors

Jesus as the "Prince of Peace," the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God honors Mary as the "Queen of Peace" This solemnity, falling on New Year's Day, is also designated the World Day of Peace. Mary Mother of God Prayer God our Father, may we always profit by the prayers of the Virgin Mother Mary, for you bring us life and salvation through Jesus Christ her Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen

EPIPHANYThe story of the Magi traveling from the East to see the Christ child appears in the Gospel According to St. Matthew. Upon seeing a star rising in the East, they realized it was a sign that the king of the Jews had been born. The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem of Judea, and to Jesus' dwelling there. Having arrived, they worshipped the infant Jesus, and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The term epiphany means "to show" or "to make known" or even "to reveal." The Magi were the first Gentiles to acknowledge Jesus as "King" and so were the first to "show" or "reveal" Jesus to a wider world as the incarnate Christ. This act of worship by the Magi was one of the first indications that Jesus came for all people, nations, and races, and that the work of God in the world would not be limited.Epiphany is a time to focus on the mission of the Church in reaching others by "showing" Jesus as the Savior of all people. Epiphany Prayer O God Who by a star guided the wise men to the worship of your Son we pray you to lead to yourself the wise and great of every land that unto you every knee may bow, and every thought be brought into captivity Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

BAPTISM OF CHRISTThe Christmas Season draws to a close with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. We will look more deeply into this celebration in next week’s letter.Prayer for the Baptism of Christ Almighty, eternal God, when the Spirit descended upon Jesus at His baptism in the Jordan, You revealed Him as Your own beloved Son. Keep us, Your children born of water and the Spirit, faithful to our calling.

And The Word became flesh and dwelt among us Jn 1:14

Juan 1:14

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Are you ready for Christmas?

How can we Catholics keep this season of Holiness in our hearts as we “wait in joyful hope for the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ”?

I invite you to spend more time in prayer and to take that time to reflect more deeply on the nativity of our Lord, God’s gift to us as a promise of our salvation. Let us remember that “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (Jn. 1:14). Yes, brothers and sisters, the Word of God becomes visible to us, speaks to us and gives us His Church as a means of our salvation.

God visits His people. God fulfills the promises. God is with us.

Last year, during the second weekend of Advent we were presented with a new challenge and the chance to put our faith into action. We began the campaign to repair, renovate and beautify our church and our other facilities which need repair and improvement. We have the mission, and the opportunity, to show God our love and dedication to preserve His Church on earth for future generations to come so they can be saved, as we are, to follow in the footsteps of Christ with the desire to do the will of God. As the good stewards that we are called to be – sharing our time, talent, and treasure for the building of the Kingdom of God on earth – we have been asked to take part in giving back to God some of what He has so freely given to us.

It will be wonderful if we can come together as the family of faith that we are this Christmas , and throughout the year, and show God our love and gratitude for all the blessings he has bestowed on us, and our families – especially, for the blessing of His Church on earth and His holy presence among us that brings us His love, joy, peace, unity, healing and reconciliation.

May the Spirt of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and the Word of God made Flesh, bless us and our families on Christmas and help us to become good stewards. With this blessing, we are able to renovate our church and facilities that are the visible sign of His Holy presence on earth, since it is in the Church that we celebrate His Sacraments. With great sincerity, Deacons Mark Holt and Mark Hronicek, the parish staff and Fr. Enrique Alvarez urge all of us to share the hope of salvation with family and friends, inviting them to celebrate the Holy Mass of Christmas, and throughout the year on Sundays, with us. In this way, we can truly say “we are ready for Christmas.”

In Christ our Savior

Fr. Enrique Alvarez

And The Word became flesh and dwelt among us Jn 1:14

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

During this time, we focus on many things; one of them is the feast of the Holy Family. When God decided to become one of us, he was trying to tell us that we are so much like him. When people encountered Jesus, they met God - God incarnate. One of the ways I used to imagine the mystery of the Incarnation was that divinity was hidden, distorted somehow, to look like a human being. It seems God has manifested to the world an image of what he looks like. When you look on divinity, it doesn't look that much different from humanity. God became man, St. Thomas Aquinas said, so that man could become God. When we reflect on this great mystery of God becoming one of us, we must recognize that we are so like him: We are so good and holy.

This feast of the Incarnation says the most extraordinary thing about humanity: it talks about how close human beings are to the divine. We are made just a little bit less than the angels, who are very close to God. One of the things the feast of the Holy Family speaks of is not just a traditional view - mothers, fathers and children - but the wonderful family we call humanity. We need to sense its goodness and power, and work with it. In this feast, we see those who are called to be parent figures. Sometimes this is literal; sometimes the parenting is in the role of giving life - that's what a parent does. Everyone has the role of bringing to this child - who will be part of a network of family and friends - a way of seeing, a way of life, a way of faith. When we recognize that, it's exciting to share life in the community.

We're constantly called to parent - to give life to someone. We also need to recognize that when sin enters in, we can end up robbing people of life. The first reading from Sirach invites us to honor those who gave us life. We need to love and care for those who have parented us. When you give life to those who have given it to you, there's a wonderful cycle in which life replenishes itself. The tragedy is that people aren't always able to parent well. In the reading from Paul, we see an emphasis on forgiveness. All of the work of recovery I've ever been involved in that tries to deal with the damage sometimes resulting from family life always seems to come back to this fundamental idea: The only way out of negative experiences of family for us is forgiveness. If we wallow in a disposition of thinking that we're victims, that our life is always going to be less because of these bad experiences, we'll never get to the place we are called to be, the place of full life.

There's a marvelous image in the gospel passage of Joseph, the patron of the universal church. That's a very interesting title. Those who chose that title for Joseph had to have something in mind. We know one fundamental thing about Joseph's graced life: He took care of Jesus and Mary. He was a unique figure: Whenever there was danger for those he loved or if there was something going on with those that he loved that he couldn't fathom, an angel always spoke to him in a dream. I think Joseph carries the title of patron of the entire church not simply because he cared for the Holy Family but because of the way he cared. Joseph was radically open to listening to a voice from beyond, from the God who created him. If we really want to do this work of giving life to one another, if we want to be a parenting figure in the world, we need to be in touch with the parent - the father and the mother of all life. We need to be open to the message and the teachings, so grace can fill us, enabling us to do the task. As well as being people called to forgive that which hasn't been as it should be, we are called to do the best job we can in this wonderful role of giving life to others. Joseph is a wonderful image to focus on - a man who not only listened to this voice deep in his unconscious revealed in a dream - but also someone who acted on it. He took Jesus and Mary wherever this voice called him.

As we continue to dwell on the Incarnation, we are asked to dwell on the image of family life and to reflect on the beauty of life. Nothing is sadder than to see people who have lost hope and an appreciation of everything around them. There is so much around us today that makes us feel like victims, that makes us feel the world is not what it's supposed to be. We may feel things are out of control. Fear is the absence of love, the absence of grace. When we're in a disposition of seeing the world in a way that can only create fear, anxiety and worry, when we have a desire to control things so that we're not hurt by that which is out there - then we know we are off-center. When we're in a disposition of recognizing the beauty, the goodness of things, we're in the place of abundance, the place of love. The opposite of love is fear. The opposite of living in the peace of the kingdom of God is living in this place of anxiety and worry. As we reflect upon the feast of the Holy Family, let us simply trust in the family that God has created, this community you and I are living in. When we see it as privilege to be here, we see it as filled with secrets and good places to go. We sense there is something unfolding bigger than our own individual lives that we are participating in. When that whole process works for us, then we get a feeling of what the incarnate Christ came to establish in the world - a kingdom of great love and a kingdom of great peace. We need to tell everyone the marvelous good news that our God has been born into this world, and that this world is very, very good.
