Within the majority of the program area, the addition of express lanes is being considered to provide additional capacity, relieve congestion and provide a more reliable travel time option for passenger and transit vehicles. In addition, improvements address safety and traffic operations on the interstates. Interstate modernization projects incorporate additional elements such as opportunities to add bicycle and pedestrian facilities, aesthetic treatments, transit accommodations, and reconnecting streets where possible. I-275 North of Downtown Tampa The I-275 corridor north of downtown Tampa is a major north-south thoroughfare connecting to downtown Tampa. It also serves as a link to the regional and statewide transportation network. FDOT completed a study on proposed corridor improvements, which identified adding one general purpose lane in each direction from north of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to north of Bearss Avenue and where required, widening inside shoulders to accommodate potential future transit. The improvements are partially funded for construction. Along the corridor, FDOT will construct dedicated auxiliary lanes from the I-4 ramps to north of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to provide drivers with a transition from the I-275/I-4 interchange (FPID 443770-1-52-01). FDOT will also construct one additional general purpose lane in each direction from north of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to north of Hillsborough Avenue. To accommodate potential future transit in this area (FPID 431821-2-52-01), FDOT will widen the inside and outside shoulders of the roadway to provide flexibility for future transit operations. Additionally, FDOT will construct noise barriers in some areas along this corridor and complete improvements at underpasses to make them more pedestrian friendly. Improvements at underpasses may include various combinations of removing portions of the sloped embankment under bridge ends and utilizing vertical walls to open the space, widening sidewalks, painting bridge structures, providing LED lighting, and installing special fencing. FDOT will identify landscaping opportunities along the corridor. The project will be a design-bid-build procurement and construction is anticipated to begin in Fall 2021. Tampa Bay Next ProgramTampa Bay Next is a program to modernize Tampa Bay’s transportation infrastructure and a process for engaging the public.

I-275 North of Downtown TampaThe I-275 corridor north of downtown Tampa is a major north-south thoroughfare connecting to downtown Tampa.

For additional information visit www.fdottampabay.com.
