HYBRID EMISSION TESTING Measurement Challenges – Over-Dilution

Challenges:

• Hybrid vehicles will run for longer times without the combustion engine on.

• During these times the Bags of the CVS system are filled with dilution air only.

• That will result in a significant over-dilution over the whole test, which will lead to very low emission

concentrations in the bags.

Needed Solutions (for EU Legislation):

• Use Super Low Emission Vehicle measurement system configurations

• Heated CVS and dried dilution air to allow lower overall dilution ratios

converter to charge it with O2, which disables NOx reduction.

Possible Solutions:

• Ensure low tailpipe de-pressure conditions. Like with an Active Tailpipe Pressure control system. A

blower compensates for pressure losses over the dilution air filter and tubing of the CVS

HYBRID EMISSION TESTING Conclusion

• Hybrid technology changes faster than emission legislation can be adjusted.

Legislations will continue to change and may not be clear in all details

• Hybrid emission testing is more complex and time consuming.

Especially hard for non-OEM Labors, which do not have an inside view

about the hybrid control strategies.

• Worldwide further CO2 reduction targets will come, like 95g/km in 2020 in EU

will further change technology and test procedures.

Outlook for Automotive Industry Conclusion

• Further shift of sales and production to BRIC markets.

(9% of world production in 2000, 33% in 2010, 47% in 2025)

• BRIC markets emission limits will become similar to Triad

• BRIC customer requirements will be different. Higher share of low-

budget cars and different functionalities. (In 2025, 25% of Chinese

drivers will be < 30 years and 10% above 60. In Germany 10 % will be

< 30 and 33% above 60.)

• Complexity of automotive engineering will reach unprecedented levels

but have to deliver more at the same cost and time levels. Engineering

and testing needs to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
