With over 40 years of experience with exteriorSun Control Systems, Hunter Douglas providesarchitects the knowledge and expertise tointegrate Sun Control Systems into the buildingarchitecture, enhancing the façade whileproviding highly effective sun protection. From custom sizes and profiles to specializedvertical glass louvres, Hunter Douglas’engineering team will develop innovative andspecific Sun Control solutions to meet theaesthetic and performance requirements of anyproject.

DESIGNOur Sun Control Systems are engineered for vertical, angled or horizontal applications, including fixed, operable and automated solutions to meet therequirements of any design. A wide range of systemprinciples (fixed, sliding, rolling) and materials(aluminium, wood, glass) are available, as well as avariety of shapes, sizes and finishes.

FUNCTIONALITYOur systems are tested in real life conditionsagainst wear and tear, as well as for performance inwind and snow conditions. Our Sun Control Systemsare easy to maintain, ensuring a system thatcontinues to look and perform well over time.

Our Luxacote® finish is specifically designed to withstand severe

external conditions. The topcoat contains a solid UV filter, which

guarantees perfect colour and gloss stability. This topcoat provides

resistance against scratches and abrasion while the alloy and

pre-treatment ensure corrosion resistance. Hunter Douglas

products have been subjected to extensive laboratory and real-

world testing to ensure the highest quality.

COMFORTModern buildings are so well insulated that they havevery little need for heating. Heat gain caused by thesun creates a need for vast cooling capacities toensure the comfort of a building’s occupants.

Sun Control Systems ensure good working conditionsfor the occupants of a building while reducing theenergy of cooling systems by stopping excess heaton the outside of the building. By using motorisedsystems controlled by the building managementsystem the amount of heat and light entering thebuilding can even be adjusted to the dailyenvironmental conditions. By combining integratedbuilding solutions Hunter Douglas can optimise theenergy efficiency and worker comfort.

THE MODERN SIDE OF CLASSICShutters are a mainstay of traditional constructionand were relied upon for their insulation and theirappearance. As high-performance glass becameavailable, the extra insulation was no longernecessary, leading architects to move away fromtheir use.

However, with the abundance of glass in modernarchitecture, proper sun protection and a certainamount of privacy are important to create an internalcomfort. Our sliding and custom designed foldingshutters provide these elements while creatingdistinct looks which add to the building’sappearance.

This new popular design element vertically mounts

to the façade and gives the architect the

opportunity to focus not only on solar control and

privacy, but also on the façade’s visual

enhancement.

Sliding Shutters are manufactured from high quality

materials and are suitable for many different types

of buildings. Sliding shutters can be integrated into

a project during the early design stages.

SLIDING SHUTTERS• The fins in the aluminium extruded frame are

available in two materials, aluminium andWestern Red Cedar wood

• A variety of 6 fins of different shapes, 5 inaluminium and 1 in Western Red Cedar

• Finishing options:- Aluminium frames and fins can be anodised

or powder coated in a wide range of colours- Western Red Cedar is a durable wood,

which can be used untreated or oiled• Frames, which form the casing of the shutter

and carry the fins, vary in dimensiondepending on the wind loads and fin type

• Fins can be applied in either a fixed or anadjustable configuration

External Venetian Blind Systems are an extremely

discrete, effective and flexible solar shading

solution. Its slim design ensures a subtle

appearance, which contributes to the overall

building aesthetic without overpowering it.

A variety of colours ensures the perfect match

for any project.

COMPUTER ANALYSIS OF SHADING PERFORMANCEUsing an external Sun Control System that givesenough shading will help prevent sun radiation fromentering a building. With our software, this can bevisualized and calculated. In wintertime, when thesun angle is low the sun radiation can be used toreduce the energy needed to heat up the building. This effect can be designed and demonstrated in ananimation, clearly showing the shading effect of thechosen system. By changing the system pitch and/orpanel angle the shading effect can be optimizedand the energy consumption minimized.

Hunter Douglas is equipped to advise on specificrequirements concerning natural daylight levels indifferent depths of the building. Comparisons ofdifferent Sun Control Systems can be made, resultingin the ideal solution for the requested performance. The results presented in a clear visualization can beadded to the building specifications ensuring thecomfort criteria will be met.

Light, Heat and Energy

Internal view 12:00 AM, April 1st External view

Internal view 9:00 AM, December 1st

The reduction of the sun radiation entering the buildingdue to the use of an External Sun Control Systemimmediately reduces the amount of energy needed tocool the building. Therefore, the capacity of the coolingequipment can be reduced, resulting in a lower initialinvestment. Passive control systems like Sun ControlSystems noticeably improve the personal comfort level. When a smart artificial lighting system is used thatautomatically adjusts itself to daylight levels enteringthe building, the energy consumption will again bereduced. The light intensity will be turned lower orhigher as a reaction to the daylight that is actuallyentering the building.Hunter Douglas can demonstrate the amount of Luxduring sunny and overcast days in relation with our Sun Control Systems.

TAKE CONTROL The more personal control a system offers, the morecomfortable the building will be. Whether you desirea basic system, related to the sunpath and weatherconditions or an intelligent system, which allows fullpersonal light and heat control while taking inaccount the overall building management,Hunter Douglas has the solution for you.

Control Systems

CONTROL SYSTEMS Hunter Douglas Basic, Advanced, and Intelligentcontrol systems allow powerful and efficientoperation of Hunter Douglas Sun Control Systems.Because personal control is often an importantfactor, systems can be combined to operate viaswitches, desktop, or palmtop.

Basic control systems respondto an on-of switch. Thisswitch can be a fixed or aremote controlled unit. Theadjustable Sun ControlSystem can be positioned inany angle and therefore thisis the optimum personalcontrollable system.

Advanced control systemsrespond to a range ofcontrols, including switchesand timers. This systemsupports a limited amount offeedback options like sun andwind sensors in an optimalshading and light regulation.

Intelligent control systemswith programmable software. This allows a high degree offreedom in operating the SunControl System. Connected tothe building managementsystem, cooling and heatingand even the lighting levelscan be controlled. All levelscan manually be overruledand an overall reset can beprogrammed on pre-setmoments of the day.

In several reports, strong and convincing argumentshave been made that better thermal insulation ofbuildings will increase energy efficiency and contributeconsiderably to the goals of the Kyoto Protocol. Amongthe various measures, improved glazing has beenrepeatedly recommended, along with more insulation.Glazing, however, remains a static element in thebuilding’s envelope, while the outdoor climateconditions alter with the seasons and can varyconsiderably in the course of a day. Solar shadingdevices, preferably controlled, mobile and automated, will make the solar transmittance through the windowsdynamic and adaptable. In that way, both the coolingenergy demand in summer and the heating demand inwinter can be substantially reduced, by making gooduse of free solar gains, when they are welcome - inwinter - while avoiding overheating in summertime.
