The slave revolt of 1791
• On August 22, 1791, the slaves revolted,
razing approximately 180 sugar
plantations and 900 coffee, cotton, or
indigo plantations
• At least 1000 whites and 10,000 slaves
were killed
• The revolt was remarkable both in scale
and in organization
