Series History: The Beavers hold a 7-3 lead on the all-time se-ries with the Peacocks, but have lost the last two games with UIU. Last season, BSU lost 112-108 in overtime at the NSIC Hoopsfest and 83-70 in the BSU Gymnasium. Curfman is 5-3 in his career against the Peacocks.

Last Action: BSU brought its 4-1 record into the opening NSIC weekend Dec. 4-5, but dropped both decisions against MSU Moorhead and Minnesota, Crookston in the BSU Gymnasium.

vs. MSU Moorhead - The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team began its home and Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference seasons in grand fashion Friday night at the BSU Gymnasium, falling short in a double overtime thriller against Minnesota State University Moorhead 75-66. Freshman center Emily Kaus had 10 points and 11 rebounds to post her second consecutive double-double, making her just the 15th player to accomplish the fete in BSU program history.

Both teams started the game slow on offense and the Dragons ( 6-0, 1-0 NSIC) held a 25-24 lead at halftime. In the second half, the lead changed six times and the score was tied three times. A freshman Jessie Althoff free throw with 1:48 remaining in the second half tied the contest 54-54 and that is where the score would stay, as neither team found the bottom of the net before the final buzzer. The first overtime session saw a back-and-forth game, but only six points a side were scored and the two teams battled into the fourth frame. MSU Moorhead got out to a four point lead in the first two minutes, but BSU didn’t want to lose the epic battle and tied the game at 66-66 with just over two minutes remaining. Unfortunately, those would be the last points the Beavers (4-2, 0-1 NSIC) would muster in the game and they lost 75-66.

It was an all around effort for BSU in the game, as nine different players saw at least 12 minutes on the floor, with seven of those student-athletes recording eight points or more. Junior Anna Hebrink had 11 rebounds, nine points and four assists in the game. Freshman Katie Pettit had 10 points.

vs. UMC Crookston - The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team fell short in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference shootout with the University of Minnesota, Crook-ston, losing 92-88 in the BSU Gymnasium Saturday. Freshman Katie Pettit posted 17 points, going 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.

The Golden Eagles (3-4, 1-1 NSIC) came out firing in the first half, shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 44.4 from beyond the 3-point line to take an 11 point lead into the locker room.

The Beavers (4-3, 0-2 NSIC) didn’t waste anytime cutting down the deficit in the second half, going on a 15-4 run in the frame’s first four minutes to tie the contest at 50 a piece. Five different BSU players scored in the run, getting on the board in every fash-ion with lay-ups, jumpers, free throws and 3-pointers. The game was a back-and-forth affair for the next 13 minutes, as the game was tied eight times in that time span. A lay-up by UMC with 3:05 remaining gave the Golden Eagles a lead they wouldn’t re-linquish for the remainder of game. BSU was within one after a Pettit free throw with 1:46 on the clock, but UMC responded on the ensuing possession with a two-point basket. That one-point mark was the closest the Beavers got, falling to 0-2 on the week-end and in conference play.

UMC shot 50 percent from the field in the game, to BSU’s 40 per-cent. The Beavers forced 20 Golden Eagle turnovers, while com-mitting only eight of their own. Pettit had four of BSU’s 12 steals in the game, as the home team outscored UMC 20-5 in the points off turnovers category. Junior Anna Hebrink posted 12 points and five rebounds, while four of her teammates had nine points. Junior center Colleen McKay was one player with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Kim Rosecrans provided a spark off the bench, playing in 19 minutes, posting nine points, four rebounds and two steals.

NSIC Preseason Poll: The Bemidji State women’s basketball team is ranked 13th in the 2009-10 edition of the Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released today by the league. The Beavers received 37 points after going 3-24 overall and 1-19 in NSIC play, tying them for 13th last season.

NSIC Preseason Player to Watch: Sophomore Sydney Epe-ma played in all 27 games for BSU, starting 24 in 2009…She averaged 11.1 points per game in over-all contests and a 11.0 clip in conference play…Recorded double-digits in points in 16 games, in-cluding nine games in a row in double-figures and two over 20…Established a career-high 22 points in a 112-108 overtime loss to Upper Iowa, Nov. 29, playing in 40 minutes…Was the team’s top scorer

in seven games…Led the team in 3-pointers made with 73 and owned a .353 shooting percentage from beyond the arc…Her 207 3-point attempts established a BSU single season record…Also, led the team in minutes with 30.0 and averaged 2.9 re-bounds and 1.4 assists.

Curfman in Season Openers at BSU: BSU head coach Mike Curf-man is 1-4 in season openers in his career at Bemidji State since joining the program for the 2005-06 season.

Sydneeey for Threee: Sophomore Sydney Epema knocked-down six 3-pointers in the season opener against Mayville State, tying her career-high. She has 19 this season to lead the team and sit third in the NSIC in 3-pointers made. She has attempted 43 3-pointers for a .442 percentage. Last season, Epema made 73 3-pointers in a BSU single-season record 207 attempts. She finished second in the NSIC in 3-pointers.

Doubling-up in the Debut: Freshman Katie Pettit recorded a double-double in her collegiate debut against Mayville State, Nov. 16. She had 18 points and 10 assists in the game. Last season, the Beavers only record three double-doubles and the season-high for assists was nine.

Double the Fun: Freshman center Emily Kaus recorded her first-career double-double in the 79-65 victory against Western New Mexico Nov. 28. She had 10 points and 13 rebounds. In BSU’s next contest against MSU Moorhead Dec. 4, Kaus recorded her second double-double with 10 points and 11 kills. She is the first freshman since the 2004-05 season to record two double-doubles in a season and is the first player since the 2005-06 season to post consecutive double-doubles.

Emily says, “NO!”: Through seven games, Kaus has recorded five or more blocks in two different games, including establishing the new school record for blocks in a game with seven against Western State Nov. 27. Last season, there wasn’t a player all year to record more than four blocks in a game. She has 20 blocked shots this sea-son, sitting second in the NSIC.

Freshmen PROduction: The 2009-10 freshmen class has had an immediate impact on the Beavers this season, playing like pros in all areas of the game. The freshmen are averaging 36.1 points per game, the most by any class on the team. They are also averaging 26.1 rebounds and 6.7 assists per contest. They have the only three double-doubles this season (Pettit and Kaus), which is the first time in BSU program history two freshmen have recorded a double-dou-ble in the same season.

2-0 Start: The last time BSU started the season 2-0 was in 1999-00 with wins over Morningside and Middlebury. The Beavers have started 2-0 only eight times in the 43 years of the program.

Triple-digits: BSU poured in 108 points in a 108-63 victory against Martin Luther College Nov. 20. The 108 points tied a all-time high for points in a game by a Beaver squad. It also marked the 12 game a BSU team has scored in triple-digits. The last time the Beavers scored 100 points and won was against the University of Minnesota-Morris, Feb. 22, 2003.

Mike Curfman is in his fifth year as head women’s bas-ketball coach for the Beavers. Curfman has directed

Bemidji State University to a 43-68 overall record (.387) in his four seasons while posting a 25-45 (.357) mark in the North-ern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Entering his fifth season as head coach, Curfman becomes the third-longest tenured coach in the program’s history, trailing only Doreen Zierer who coached 11 seasons (1990-2002) and Ruth Howe who coached the programs ‘first 10 seasons (1967-77). Curfman is tied for fourth on BSU’s all-time coaching victories list. He trails Zierer (129), Howe (95), Joan Campbell (70) and is tied with Mary McDonald (43). The 2008-09 season was the worst under Curfman as the team posted a 3-24 overall and 1-19 NSIC record. In the 2007-08 season, BSU finished with a 13-15 record under Curfman, going 9-9 in the NSIC to finish league play in sixth place. With 13 wins it was the third consecutive season the

Beavers have had 10 wins or more. The last time a Beaver squad had three consecutive 10-plus win seasons was from 1990-1993. Rejuvenating a program is nothing new to Curfman, he came to Bemidji State after six years at the helm of the University of Minnesota, Crookston program where three times during his tenure his teams set or equaled school records for wins (2000-01, 2001-02 and 2004-05) and racked up 55 victories during his final four seasons. While at UMC, he helped to elevate the program to the NCAA Division II level. After a 1-26 season in 1999-2000, Curfman directed the Golden Eagles to a school-record nine wins in 2000-01 and increased that record by16 the following year. In 2002-03, under Curfman,UMC made the NSIC tournament for the first time, cruising to the championship game before falling to NCAA Tournament bound University of Minnesota Duluth. Most recently his Golden Eagles tied for fourth place in the NSIC posting a league record of 8-6 while going 16-11 overall and making their first ever appear-ance in the North Central Regional Polls. He has mentored 10 All-Conference selections as a head coach including 2000-01 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and 2001-02 Player of the Year Jessica Forsline and was himself named as the 2002 NSIC Coach of the Year. Curfman’s teams have done equally as well in the classroom. During his tenure at UMC, the Golden Eagles posted at least a 3.0 team grade point average and finished in the Women’s Basket-ball Coaches Association’s Top 10 Academic National Rankings with a team G.P.A. of better than 3.4 in 2004-05.
