Bemidji State Katie Pettit averaged 17.0 points last weekend, guiding the Beavers to a 2-0 NSIC road trip at Winona State (79-69) and Upper Iowa (78-76). She averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in 29.0 minutes of work. In the two games she shot .600 from the field, .667 from the 3-point line and .800 from the free throw line. In the win against WSU, Pettit scored a career-high 26 points, adding five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, while shooting .800 percent from the field and .800 from beyond the arc.

NSIC Women’s Basketball Team NotesAUGUSTANA COLLEGE - Megan Doyle (G, 5-7, Jr., Alexandria, S.D. / Hanson HS) led the Vikings to a 2-0 record this weekend with wins over Valley City State and Wayne State. Doyle scored 16 points in a 96-64 mid-week win over Valley City, also contributing three assists and two blocks in that game. She was 53.8 percent (7 of 13) from the field and 66.7 percent (2 of 3) from 3-point range. Doyle followed that up by scoring 22 points in a 68-61 win over Wayne State on Saturday. In a close game throughout, Doyle scored 10 of her 22 points in the last 7:28 of the game, allowing Augie to pull ahead and hand Wayne State its first loss of the season. She was 55.6 percent (5 of 9) shooting and 50.0 percent (3 of 5) on 3-pointers. Doyle also made 9 of 11 free throws (81.8 percent), pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and recorded three blocks. For the week she averaged 19.0 points, four rebounds, four assists, and 2.5 blocks. She only committed three turnovers for a 2.7 assist to turnover ratio and was 54.5 percent (12 of 22) and 55.6 percent (9 of 11) from downtown.

BEMIDJI STATE - Katie Pettit (Fr., G, 5-6, Howard Lake, Minn., Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted HS) averaged 17.0 points last weekend, guiding the Beavers to a 2-0 NSIC road trip at Winona State (79-69) and Upper Iowa (78-76). CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - Gillian Bjerke (C, 6-3, Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn. / Iowa State) led the Golden Bear push to a continued undefeated season last weekend, averaging 15.0 points and five rebounds per game. The 6-3 senior hit 61.9% of her shots (13-21) from the field in the wins over Minnesota, Crookston and MSU Moorhead. Bjerke’s role against the size of the Dragons was instrumental in the Golden Bear win; she had a team high 17 points working against an opponent that has done a good job limiting other posts while also playing stingy defense to hold the MSUM scorers at bay. The Golden Bears are 8-0 on the year and 4-0 in NSIC play as the league heads into a break in conference action over the holidays.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY - Taylor Luke (G, 5-9, Fr., Amery, WI/Amery HS) averaged 16.0 points per game, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in two road games over the weekend, averaging just one turnover per game despite averaging 35 minutes. At 11th ranked Minnesota State, Luke scored 18 points with six rebounds and two assists. The freshman point guard hit all six of her free throw attempts in a 68-64 loss. Luke followed with a 14-point, two assist effort in a 62-58 loss at Southwest Minnesota State. Sophomore guard Marlee Finlee (Mandan, ND/Mandan HS) was unconscious at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, making six treys in nine attempts to score 18 points off the bench, a career high for points. Finley also added two steals and two rebounds.

MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON - The Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team earned an NSIC split this weekend. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) led Minnesota, Crookston averaging 15.5 points/game. She went 8-17 from the field, 2-3 from long range and 13-14 from the free-throw line. She also led the squad with 12 total rebounds on th weekend. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) averaged 14.5 points/game on the weekend. She shot 54 percent from the field including a season high 75 percent from the field against St. Cloud State. MINNESOTA DULUTH - Jheri Booker (F, 5-10, Sr., Summerville, Ga.) averaged 24 points per game over the weekend as the University of Min-nesota Duluth went 1-1 in its first league action on the road. After scoring a season-low 14 points in a winning effort at Upper Iowa University on Saturday, Booker racked up a career-high 34 in Sunday’s loss to Winona State University. She added 11 rebounds against the Warriors for her sixth double-double in nine games this season. Booker finished the weekend with 48 points as she made 22 of her 41 field goal attempts while adding 13 rebounds and nine steals. MINNESOTA STATE - Jennie Noreen (G, So., Avon, Minn.) led the Mavericks in scoring 40 points, while bringing down nine boards, earning eight assists, grabbing six steals and tallying a block on the two-game weekend. Noreen earned her career-high points in Saturday’s game against Northern State, scoring 27 points. This broke her career-high of 21 points before the half, also shooting 100 percent at the half. Noreen also tied MSU’s all-time record for the most three-point field goals made in a single game, with seven. Noreen finished the weekend shooting 56 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from the arch and 50 percent at the line. The Minnesota State women’s basketball team went 2-0 over the weekend. Friday night the Mavericks defeated U-Mary 68-64. Senior guard Tiffany Moe led the Mavericks with a season-high 20 points, taking six rebounds and earning a season-high seven assists in the game. Senior forward Liz Trauger contributed to the scoring with 17 points grabbing eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Jennie Noreen totaled 13 points with taking away three steals. MSU finished the game tallying 17 assists, bringing down 41 rebounds and taking eight steals from the Marauders. The Mavericks shot 70 percent at the free throw line and 32 percent from the field.On Saturday evening the Mavericks went on to defeat Northern State, 72-56. The Mavericks finished the game shooting 75 percent at the free-throw line, 45 percent at the three point mark and 41 percent from the field. MSU handed out 20 assists, grabbing eight steals and seven blocks in the victory.Leading the Mavericks with a career-high 27 points, Noreen also tied MSU’s record for most three-point shots made in a single game with seven. Noreen also grabbed seven rebounds, six assists. Senior guard Tiffany Moe scored 12 points while Trauger put down 10 points in the game.

Angie Jetvig averaged 15.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. On Friday, after registering only seven points in the first half, Nash-Gerlach went six for eight from the field and was perfect from the line in the second half. She ended the night with 24 points and grabbed 12 boards. On Saturday, Nash-Gerlach contributed 17 points on the night including hitting all six shots from the charity stripe.The Dragons split their second weekend of NSIC play, topping St. Cloud State on Friday and suffering their first loss of the season to Concordia, St. Paul on Saturday. Alison Nash-Gerlach led the team this weekend, averaging 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Angie Jetvig averaged 15.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. On Friday, after registering only seven points in the first half, Nash-Gerlach went six for eight from the field and was perfect from the line in the second half. She ended the night with 24 points and grabbed 12 boards. Rettke scored 18 points while cleaning up the defensive boards with 13, on her way to 16 on the night. On Saturday, the Dragons were lead by sophomore Angie Jetvig who was the only player in the game from either team to post a double-double, finishing the night with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Nash-Gerlach contributed 17 points on the night including hitting all six shots from the charity stripe.

NORTHERN STATE - Mikayla Barondeau So., F, 6-1, (Frederick, S.D. / Frederick-Leola HS) had another outstanding pair of games in Northern State’s 0-2 week where she averaged 18.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.5 blocks, and 1.5 steals in averaging 34 minutes per game. In the Wolves 66-64 loss to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Barondea nearly matched her career-high in points with her 23-point effort, and nearly recorded her third double double of the season and ninth of her career with nine rebounds in that contest. She also had a stellar game on the defensive end by notching five blocks and two steals. In Saturday’s 72-56 loss to #11 Minnesota State she got her third double double of the season and ninth of her career with her 14-point 10-rebound effort against the Mavericks.

SMSU - Megan Stadler (G, 5-5, Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D. / Roosevelt HS) scored 26 points (13.0 ppg) and tallied eight assists in a pair of games this past weekend, helping Southwest Minnesota State complete its first conference weekend sweep since February 2008 and its first home conference weekend sweep since February 2006. On Friday against Northern State, Stadler hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 64-64 tie and lift her Mustangs to a 66-64 victory. She had 11 points and five assists in the win. On Saturday against U-Mary, the senior netted a game-high 15 points. Stadler, who shot 50 percent from the floor in the win, scored SMSU’s final six points of the contest and helped the Mustangs fend off a late push from the visiting Maruaders. Other weekend totals for the guard included five rebounds and two steals.

ST. CLOUD STATE - Becca Friestleben (G, So., Victoria, Minn.) led the Huskies in scoring in back-to-back games. She scored a team high 15 points against MSU Moorhead on Friday and 18 points at Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday. She averaged 16.5 points over the weekend and shot a combined 44.4 percent from the field (12 of 27) and 42.9 percent from three-point range (6 of 14). Friestleben has scored in double figures in three straight games and seven this season. Talisha Barlow (G, Jr., Little Canada, Minn.) had games of ten and 14 points over the weekend and has scored in double figures in all nine games this season. Barlow leads the Huskies in scoring with 17.0 points per game. She is headed to the 1,000 points club at SCSU with 938 career points as of 12/14/09. St. Cloud State is 4-5 overall and will play Valley City on Dec. 16 and Jamestown University on Dec. 21.

UPPER IOWA - Kenya Howard (Sr., F, 5-9, Chicago, Ill.) averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in a pair of close Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference defeats. The transfer from the University of Missouri-Kansas City averaged 33 minutes in the pair of home contests while leading the UIU starters with a 57.7% (15-of-26) field goal percentage. Howard also dished out five assists on the weekend while blocking a pair of shots.The Peacocks, currently 0-9 and 0-4 in NSIC play, conclude the 2009 calendar year on Dec. 28 when Lewis University visits Dorman Gym in Fayette for a 6 p.m.

WAYNE STATE - Augustana College handed Wayne State its first loss of the season Saturday night in Sioux Falls 68-61. Junior center Mara Hjelle (White Bear Lake, Minnesota) recorded her first double-double of the season in a losing effort for the Wildcats, notching 19 points and 10 rebounds while going 11 of 12 from the charity stripe. For the season, Hjelle is now averaging 14.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the 7-1 Wildcats, now 2-1 in the NSIC.

WINONA STATE - The Warriors split a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games over the weekend Michelle McDonald (C, 6-0, So., Johnsburg, Ill.) was 8-12 (.667) from the field and went 11-13 (.846) from the charity stripe. She added 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 27 total points for the weekend. She scored in double figures in each game (10 against Bemidji State University and 17 in the win against the University of Minnesota Duluth) and had 7 and 8 rebounds in the respective games. In the game against UMD equaled her single-game, career-high, total field goals with 6 and recorded a single-game career-high 2 steals.

Jheri Booker has be picked by the league coaches as the 2009-10 NSIC Women’s Basketball Pre-season Player of the Year. Booker, finished off a stellar breakout season for the Bulldogs in 2008-09 by being named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Year. She led her team in scoring and steals last season. Booker, who held the top slot in the NSIC (3.75 spg ) and No. 10 mark in the NCAA (3.6 spg), tied the single-season steals record with UMD alum Susan Anderson, who had 99 total steals in 2000-01. She also contributed 15.3 ppg and missed reach-ing double-digits in only seven games this season. She scored her career-high 27 points against Wayne State on Jan. 2, 2009. Booker also helped dominate the backcourt, averaging 7.4 rpg. Her leadership, skill and dynamic abilities helped bring the Bulldogs’ to a 16-12 overall record last season.
