Thanks for your interest in Hot Rod Institute, the alternative to typical automotive schools. The specialty car and motorcycle industries are in need of a school that trains students in the skills and tasks that are in high demand. Hot Rod Institute has six different classes for the student to choose from in this specialized industry. A student may take any number of clas-ses, from all six classes to just one, depending on the student’s educational desires and budget. No other tools or supplies needed for training.

The intent of HRI is to give the student a very strong basic and advanced background into the world of custom cars and custom motorcycle fabrication. The curriculum includes processes from the entire vehicle, not just a few selected sheetmetal or suspension modifications.

Hot Rod Institute does not offer training in the repair industry or try to mix the two industries. If you want to work strictly in the repair industry, a different automotive school specializing in dealership training may be more suited to your career goals. We do not require students to complete “core” programs in industries they have no desire to work in. It's the complete hot rod program, not just parts and pieces.

I'm the owner and one of the instructors at Hot Rod Institute, so if you have any questions I should be able to answer them. I take great pride in my personal involvement in Hot Rod Institute. This school started with the student’s educational needs and wants in mind, by an instructor that cares not a large private school corporation simply looking to make money selling education.

The students’ greatest advantage at Hot Rod Institute must be our small class sizes and large amounts of hands on experience. Hot Rod Institute is located at 2402 N. Maple Ave, Rapid City SD. The building is in a great location just behind the Rushmore Mall. The building is a little over 20,000 square feet of space, enough to handle all six classes. Hot Rod Institute (HRI) is a professional training facility offering students a postsecond-ary education focusing on skills of the specialty automotive industry. Founded by Doug LaRue in January 2008, the first class at Hot Rod Institute had an enrollment of nine students from across the country. Over the five years of offering training, Hot Rod Institute has graduated many students, most with jobs in the industry. Hot Rod Institute is quickly becoming the new trusted name in specialty automotive education with a placement rating around 80%, a number that continues to grow as more and more top shops are calling to request info on new entry-level employees. Hot Rod Institute differentiates itself from other automotive education institutes by offering intense, high quality education focusing on the skills of the specialty automotive and custom motorcycle industries. Hot Rod Institute offers a variety of classes, with a curriculum specializing in custom fabrication, automotive mechanics, and freestyle automotive engineering.


HRI is the popular choice for students of any age interested in obtaining a job in these industries; by keeping the cost of tuition affordable while increasing value by offering small class sizes, one-on-one instruction, and hands-on curriculum. Although the majority of our students are in the 18-23 age range, we have had plenty of students with much more “worldly experience.” Students may elect to take any number of classes offered at HRI, from all six to just one. Each quarter is approximately three months long, with classes held Monday through Friday, 8 to 4:30. While a student is enrolled, they will attend one class per quarter, all day every day. After completing all of the HRI classes a student would be trained in the process of building complete vehicles. The top-notch curriculum and close-knit team at Hot Rod Institute provide an advantage for students obtaining employment the specialty automotive industry. Doug LaRue came to found Hot Rod Institute after 20 plus years of experience in postsecondary education. He started his educational career at WyoTech, where he was Program Coordinator for 10 of his 15 years also starting their Street Rod program in 1993. Looking for a change 2003, he began work at VC Tech in Alabama developing their Hot Rod, Custom Motorcycle, and Custom Paint programs. Finally in 2008 Doug decided to step out from under the large corporate, educational umbrella and start a school specializing solely in Hot Rod and Custom Motorcycle fabrication. Assembling a dedicated and talented team, they set upon the daunting task of creating a successful educational institution.

The Hot Rodding passion has been a part of American culture for over 75 years. Throughout the different stages of the pastime, one thing has been remained con-stant...the skills necessary to build a personal pride and joy. For years this dexterity was passed along from father to son, mentor to mentee, sensei to deshi, old shop duffer to snot nosed shop punk. This coveted information always seemed difficult to obtain as a person usually needed to find a job in a shop to get it. Here in lies the problem; shops usually require new hires to have a certain amount of experience. So where does one find experience if one has to have experience in order to find a job to get said experi-ence. Answer? As in all areas of life, school. Go to school to get the skills needed to enter your dream career. Hot Rod Institute is dedicated to preserving both the history and the future of the Hot Rodding Tradition. This fact is visible in our top notch cur-riculum modeled after the industries top shops and our innovative Rod Shop internship program. Hot Rod Institute is here to supply the education necessary for students to fill the needs of the Hot Rod and Specialty Automotive Industries. The major advantages of Hot Rod Institute include the small class sizes, hands-on curriculum, and the personalized training the students receive. Hot Rod Institute has the most complete training program available. Within the six different classes, we cover the aspects of building a complete project in a hands-on environment. The personalized training is on-ly possible with small class sizes, 15 students or less, with the instructors delivering the curricu-lum largely with live demonstrations in the shop.



Our education model is heavily rooted in hands-on, project based learning, balanced with ample lecture explanation. The skills being

taught in the lab areas (shop) are very skills the students will be required to perform after graduation. The one-on-one instruction provided in the shop, due to the small classes, offers students the attention necessary to fully comprehend and perform the tasks of the curriculum.

Job Placement Services We provide job placement services in a few different ways. Firstly we cannot guaran-tee job placement because so much of a successful job search depends on the graduating student. We do guarantee to help students through the entire process. There is a lot of footwork to be done by students, but there is a proven formula to obtaining a dream job

with lots of hard work. A successful job search is starts with the students work in the shop. Students are required to keep a log of work performed while in the shop, and it is very important to further document their skills with pictures. A picture portfolio is an integral part of a student’s Employment Packet. Another

important part of the Employment Packet is a personal resume. Each student will attend a Resume Writing lecture during

their education at HRI, and will also be provided a generic resume that may use to create their own.

After inserting a student’s info into the resume, it may be emailed to the Director of Education

for help with any revisions or reformatting that may be necessary. During the resume

writing lecture students will also discuss the aspects of a creative cover letter. The Cover Letter will be the final addition to the Employment Packet. Once a stu-dent’s Employment Packet is ready for distribution, the student and Director of Education will look for shops or areas of

country the student would like to live in. It is never too early to start planning

your future.



Application Process After a student’s general inquiry of enrollment, the student may request the HRI Enrollment Packet. The packet will include the HRI Policy Catalog, HRI Enrollment Agreement (application), Student Loan Info and HRI Housing Packet. The student will be required to submit a completed HRI Enrollment Agreement form, and application fee of $100.00. To complete the enrollment process the student will conduct an entrance interview with the Director of Admissions. The interview, either phone or in-person, will determine the student’s capacity and intent for the education provided at Hot Rod Institute. The interview will also provide the student with greater understanding of the practices, equipment, and facilities at Hot Rod Institute. Student Housing We do not have on campus housing but we can assist with the housing and roommate. There are many apartments in the area, most within 5 to 15 minutes of the campus. The housing packet, included in the enrollment info, will contain a rental guide, listing of all the apartments in the ar-ea, and a housing questionnaire. Roommates can really cut down on the cost of living and may also grow into lifelong friendships. Students interested in finding a roommate may fill out the housing questionnaire, and we will use the answers given to offer possible roommates to all par-ticipants. Student Projects The HRI curriculum is designed to emulate a high-end shop, giving a student the chance to learn skills in all aspects of the custom car or motorcycle building process. After completion of class “comps” (competencies), most of the work completed during class time is performed on students’ projects. “Live work” may be completed on either on own personal project or on fellow students, and the type of work varies tremendously. Building a car requires team work due to the immense amount of work performed. Students will be able to bring a project to work on while attending Hot Rod Institute depending on a few factors. The project will need the approval of the School President. Shop space and parts availability will also be factors. HRI obviously can’t guarantee a student can get a project completely finished. It depends greatly on the project, the skill level and persistence of the student, and the financial resources available for the project. A project might not be in a student’s best financial interest. Money is still a driving factor when building a custom car or motorcycle as the vehicle owner must pay for all the materials that go into the project.



Financial Aid Currently we offer financial aid through Sallie Mae Financial. Sallie Mae offers loans to students attending many schools around the country. Students will be required to apply for The Career Training Smart Option Student Loan on the Sallie Mae Website. The easiest way to find the loans is to Google the name of the loan, it is usually the first result. Contact the Director of Admissions with any further questions. Accreditation Hot Rod Institute has worked very hard, as most new schools do, to obtain Regional Accreditation. The accreditation process is one of ensuring that a school engages in a continual improvement process. Hot Rod Institute has been granted Full Accreditation from the North Central Associa-tion Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), one of the leaders in both size and scope of the school accreditation process in accordance with standards of the US Department of Education. Our initial application and 2011 audited financial statements were…denied. We are reapplying with our 2012 audited financials; unfortunately we do not know how long it will take to hear back on their decision. After discussing the application with our contact at the Dept. of Education (ED), I was able to find out where the issues were. We wanted to be sure there wasn’t a problem with approving “this kind of school” or if there was something wrong with our accreditation or some other detail we had missed. Our contact at ED assured me that we weren’t denied because of the preceding items, leaving only our audited financial statements as the culprit. There was a statement within our 2010 audit that caused the issue, a “going concern” about one of our initial loans. We have refinanced the loan, but due to the fact that we cannot make any amendments/changes to the submitted financial statements we will have to reapply in the spring / summer of 2013. Although we don’t agree with their decision, we understand and agree with the need for the difficult process. They make it a lot of work because it is absolutely worth it. These processes were designed to help keep the money in the FSA system safe from “fly-by-night” schools or other programs that might not have student’s best interest in mind. We stand behind our educational offerings and we are prepared to do what it takes to make sure we are approved to accept FSA. It has not been an easy couple years getting a program of this nature off the ground, and we appreciate all of our followers and supporters.

We are proud to be able to support our American Veterans by accepting VA Benefits, after all with out Veterans our industry would not exit in the form it does today. Thank you to the men and women that protect our country and country man. The Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30), the Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 35), along with other VA Benefits (VRAP) have been approved for education at Hot Rod Institute. The amount of benefits a student receives using VA Benefits will differ depending on which of GI Bills is used and the approved percentage of benefits. The Post 9/11 GI Bill often has the best benefits and it provides around $18,000 for tuition per academic year (August 1st – July 31st), if a student is awarded 100% of their benefits. It will be up to the incoming veteran to choose the program that is best for their situation. Any interested military or veteran personal will need to contact the VA in order to receive their Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to see what percentage of what benefits will be awarded. Interested vet-erans will also be required to read the HRI VA Info Sheet to ensure they understand their options when choosing to use VA Benefits to attend HRI. Veterans will need to mail, email, or fax HRI a copy of their personal COE to Hot Rod Institute (with or after sending in their enrollment agreement) be certified in the VA ONCE system. Program Description: HRI’s Hot Rod Diploma Programs consists of at least four Hot Rod Institute’s classes taken consecutively for at least 12 months. A student would then receive a 5% tuition discount and a Diploma documenting their completion of the program. The classes taken would usually consist of HRC and HRB and then at least two other classes including HRP, HRR, HRU or HRM. This program would give the student an excellent education for the custom automotive or custom motorcycle industry. A Special Achievement Diploma would be given to any students completing all six classes. Students at HRI come from many different previous experience backgrounds, from previous home builders to interested but novice enthusiasts. Students who have completed similar classes at previous schools or have no interest in certain classes will not be required to enroll in all of the classes. Throughout a student’s decision making process of picking the correct post-secondary school, many have asked us “What is the difference between Hot Rod Institute and the other general automotive training facilities?” We feel there is a strong need for the other general automotive programs; millions of people rely on automotive technicians to keep their mode of transportation on the road. We appreciate what they do, but we are here to serve a different industry. The Specialty Automotive Industry is a huge force, generating over $36 billion dollars in revenue every year. The true American pastime has grown to be big business with numerous TV shows and an entire channel dedicated to the pursuit of speed. Shops specializing in all kinds of automotive design, fabrication, mechanics, refinishing, performance, and racing to name a few, hire and employ thousands of people to perform these jobs across the country. Other general automotive education programs primarily teach collision auto body and refinishing or automotive/diesel/motorcycle mechanics. After completing a “core” program students are allowed to enroll in an add-on class covering street rod fabrication. Although these programs are needed to fill the many positions in the automotive repair industry, they do not efficiently meet the needs of the students looking to find a job in the Hot Rod industry. Though the skills taught at the “other” schools may be distantly related to the skills taught at Hot Rod Institute, the techniques, procedures, and precision needed to succeed in the Specialty Automotive Market are not sufficiently provided at general automotive education institutions. At Hot Rod Institute the entire custom car and motorcycle building process is divided between six classes in order to fully expose students to the countless aspects necessary to complete a project of this nature. The depth of HRI’s curriculum is one of the driving forces behind the huge numbers of contact requests from interested students.


Large class sizes and the unfortunate curriculum redundancy of the other programs do not create a proficient educational environment for students. The large corporate schools require large class sizes to keep the “machine” running, which can lead a student to feel like a number not a name. Curriculum redundancy occurs when a student who has completed in a collision/refinishing “core” program and then enrolls in the street rod class followed by chassis class will have taken a similar welding class three times. Unfortunately it needs to be that way to assure everyone taking different educational paths is on the same page. We feel we have split the process of building complete vehicles in the most efficient and logical way possible.

It is important to explore all possibilities when choosing a post-secondary school, all while keeping the final goal in mind. If a student’s plan is to find a job in a dealer-ship or repair facility, Hot Rod Institute may not be the correct school for them. A student with the determination to acquire a job at one of the Top Shops throughout the country, or eventually start their own rodding business, will find Hot Rod Insti-tute to be instrumental in obtaining their goals.
