AirX Utility Surveyors, Inc. was founded in 2000 as a DBA of a small engineering firm. Three years later AirX incorporated. For over 15 years, we have consistently provided quality Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services to clients in Southern California.

Although SUE was commonly practiced in the east coast, this process was relatively new in Southern California. AirX pioneered SUE services in the region and is now considered as one of San Diego’s SUE technology leaders.

AirX offers a comprehensive package that includes vacuum excavation, locating services (USA call out ticket support or as needed), ground penetrating radar (GPR), video inspection (CCTV) of ducts, sewer and storm drains, traffic control plans including traffic control equipment & personnel, permit processing, documentation, survey, and road surface repairs. Our goal is to provide clients with quality services tailored to meet their needs and requirements.

AirX has the following certifications: SMALL BUSINESS (MICRO) (#36366) with CA DGS, WOMEN’S BUSINESS ENTERPRISE (#10050096), County/City of San Diego SMALL LOCAL BUSINESS ENTERPRISE (#11AU0373), SMALL BUSINESS ENTERPRISE with Metrolink (#293883) and the Port of Long Beach (#257195). AirX is staffed with engineers, contractors, project managers, CADD specialists, locators and potholers with over 50 years of trade experience.

SUMMARY OF SERVICES

Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) is a process with many different layers of services. AirX Utility Surveyors offers an extensive package. Our clients enjoy the flexibility to use only those services that best fit their needs. We offer the following:

Project Management AirX Project Managers duties include planning and scheduling timelines, reviewing utility alignments, traffic control plans, final reports, coordination of permit processing, attending preconstruction meetings with inspectors and working with clients.

Utility LocatingUse of specialized equipment and techniques to identify, locate and markout underground utilities including markout in support of the Underground Service Alert (USA Dig Alert).

Ground Penetrating RadarGPR technology uses high frequency electromagnetic waves. The reflected waves are detected by the radar equipment which allows us to determine the locations of metallic and non-metallic pipes in and below surfaces.

CCTV Sewer InspectionThrough the use of video with lateral launching capabilities, we are able to determine the exact location, direction and condition of sewer mains and laterals.

PotholingUse of hydro and vacuum excavation to expose existing utilities for physical location and identification in the field.

Surface RepairRepairs to asphalt or concrete using hot patch or other agency approved medium. Coring capabilities, and concrete panel replacement when requested by Client or agency.

Traffic ControlTraffic control plans, permitting, personnel and equipment including set-up, maintenance and teardown.

Cathodic ProtectionSet up test stations and launch sacrificial anodes to preserve water lines.

Documentation and MappingAn exhaustive written and digital report including data sheets with photos and a tabulation record with pertinent details of utilities that have been potholed. Create or obtain either a topographical or aerial base map of topography and utilities. Process utility and topographical survey data, review utility records from locating and potholing efforts and update to create thorough, precise and accountable utility map.

PROJECT APPROACH

LOCATING

Governmental agencies, utility companies and private entities routinely request documentation and map research of indexes and databases of underground utilities. Examples of these agencies include the County of San Diego, local water and sewer districts, Caltrans, the Tax assessor’s office, SDG&E, Cox and AT&T.

AirX locators and engineers find subsurface utilities with the use of Electromagnetic Profiling, sonar, GPR, and CCTV. They identify and mark out utilities as they exist in the field, making note of changes, inconsistencies or unverified data. Any conflicts with the proposed project, inconsistencies or missing data in mapping are then targeted for additional research, usually by potholing. The use of preliminary locating can often save a tremendous amount of time in the initial design process by identifying or eliminating potential routes for new facility undergroundings.

PROJECT APPROACH

POTHOLING

Hydro and vacuum excavation are non-destructive ways of exposing buried utilities

Hydro/vacuum excavation is the use of high-pressured water to remove soils with efficiency, speed, accuracy and cost-effectiveness. Airx equipment has cutting rates 3x higher than air-powered methods.

For environmental or archaeologically sensitive sites, AirX provides air-powered excavation solutions. AirX can quickly back fill the hole after excavation using dry dirt that was removed. SURFACE REPAIR

Once a utility has been located, it is identified, measured, photographed and documented. The utility is then covered with approximately 8” – 10” of plaster sand with the balance tamped to 95% compaction with clean, native backfill material. AirX can then perform either a cold mix or AC hot patching, whichever is stipulated by the city inspector.

PROJECT APPROACH

GROUND PENETRATING RADAR (GPR)

Ground penetrating radar is a nondestructive method of detecting subsurface utilities. The radar signal (an electromagnetic pulse) picks up reflections given off by buried objects, allowing locators to accurately detect and map underground utilities. AirX has the latest GPR equipment and highly trained crews to get the job done.

CCTV INSPECTION

AirX deploys CCTV with lateral launching capabilities to determine the structural condition of sewer pipes, storm drains and empty ducts. It is also used to identify size, composition, pipe integrity, obstructions and service laterals.

PROJECT APPROACH

TRAFFIC CONTROL

AirX provides an all-inclusive traffic control service. We furnish AutoCAD-rendered Traffic Control and Right of Way Plans (ROW) to facilitate permit approvals from city and state agencies. AirX has the highly-skilled and certified technicians and work zone flaggers to manage vehicle traffic. Equipment set-up and tear down are part of this service.

PROJECT APPROACH

CATHODIC PROTECTION

Cathodic protection is a method used to contain and prevent corrosion in metal and steel structures buried in soil or immersed in water. AirX is experienced in setting up test stations and installing sacrificial anodes to protect utilities.
