January Employee of the Month
Michelle Leonard
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Employee Recognition Committee proudly announces that Michelle Leonard of the Parks & Recreation Department has received the Fairbanks North Star Borough Employee of the Month Award for January 2020. Michelle has been nominated and selected for this honor in recognition of her unparalleled service to the borough since December 1994. In her position as Aquatics Manager, Michelle is a champion of continued education and fitness for herself and her lifeguards. She makes it a priority to stay current with training and certifications, ensuring the pools are a safe
and fun place for patrons to recreate. Michelle creates a positive and productive work environment that empowers the lifeguards to develop and lead new programs and to continually strive for the best for themselves and patrons. She handles many unanticipated demands with tact and poise, calmly and fairly providing quick, satisfactory results. Michelle is a strong team player who is always receptive to the ideas of the lifeguards, always taking the time to talk, listen, teach, and support them. Michelle’s lifeguards have expressed their deep appreciation for her remarkably kind, patient, and sometimes tough love guidance. They hold her in the highest regard!
Congratulations to Michelle,
and our thanks for a job well done!

A parting message from Sallie:
I am retiring from the Borough on January 17, 2020 and I wanted to take this opportunity
to thank all of you for your service to the Borough and the citizens of our great
community. While I am sad to be leaving such a great organization and all of you, I am
also excited to experience the next phase which will include being able to spend more
time with my growing family.
All of you should be proud of the work that you do and the impacts that it has. While it is
easy for some individuals to dislike government and its employees, it has been my
experience that once you have a conversation with an unhappy individual, they usually
come to realize the value of Borough employees and its services.
I have worked here for 21+ years and never had a bad day at work. I looked forward to
coming to work and facing whatever challenge was presented and I hope that you feel the
same way.
I truly appreciate all the opportunities I had to learn new things, implement new
programs, and make the workplace better. I will always cherish my time spent here and
know that I made a positive difference, and you can too!
Take care,
Sallie
