Dine like a StarWith the fi lming of hit shows like Th e Sopranos and 30 Rock (Silvercup Studios) and Sesame Street and Nurse Jackie (Kaufman Astoria Studios) and such hit movies as Sex and the City, our corner of Queens has seen its fair share of celebrities. So when you feel the urge to splurge and dine like the stars, here are a few of Astoria’s most elegant dining rooms to try.

S Prime Steakhouse Few things defi ne elegance and refi nement as well as

an upscale American steakhouse. Recently opened next-door to the Studio Square complex, S Prime Steakhouse marries tradition with contemporary design in one of the most magnifi cent dining rooms in Astoria-Long Island City. Th e two-story main room is bordered by high-back leather banquettes and a wine tower, encased in glass, which features a carefully edited selection from around the globe. Ascending beyond the industrial beams and dramatic balconies, an upper-level labyrinth reveals three intimate private dining rooms of varying size and ambience. Stretching below the dining room is a pristine steel kitchen and a Himalayan rock salt-lined room custom-designed for on-premises dry-aging — the signature 28 oz. rib eye is dry-aged for 60 days.

Th e expected carnivorous favorites are all executed superbly. But what make S Prime Steakhouse particularly special are Executive Chef Joel Reiss’s sophisticated spins on some steakhouse classics. Rice pilaf is no longer; here sausage-studded lap cheong fried rice steals the show. Creamed corn is now a generous sharing bowl with entire strips of corn from the cob, blanketed in a decadent Parmesan cream. Garnet and golden roasted beets are meticulously plated like an edible mosaic with Roquefort, apples and aged balsamic. A smooth and heavenly vanilla bean-speckled cheesecake, crowned with sweet macerated berries, rivals any previous version of New York cheesecake. From start to fi nish, S Prime off ers a refreshingly relevant vibe with an old spirit.

The Astor Disaster is a decadent brunch stack of brioche french toast, pulled BBQ short ribs, cheddar cheese, bacon, eggs, and onion rings.

S Prime dry ages their steaks on premises with Himalayan rock salt for up to 60 days.

The Astor Room At this subterranean supper club, nestled directly

beneath Kaufman Astoria Studios, you can quite literally dine like a star. Th e Astor Room was originally built as the commissary (the fi lm industry term for cafeteria) for Paramount Pictures in the 1920s. Contracts still require the studio to provide catering for all of the shows presently fi lming. So although Th e Astor Room has now transformed into a historical restaurant and cocktail lounge, the same kitchen that prepares your Mother & Child Reunion (an appetizer featuring a crispy poached egg on a bed of buff alo chicken) was serving lunch to Big Bird and Edie Falco just hours before.

Locale’s Blackened Mayan shrimp

Locale’s pumpkin pie martini Locale

At Locale, owner Johnny Kolyenovic aspires to off er “a taste of the city without having to travel there.” With the expertise of Executive Chef and culinary visionary Jesse Davis, the team at Locale is achieving just that... and much more. “Families come for brunch, take the kids home, and then bring friends back for an elegant dinner,” smiles Kolyenovic. Th e restaurant is one of those rare gems that appeals to nearly every demographic, off ering intimacy at candle-lit, window-side tables for two, communal space for larger parties, a vibrant bar for singles and friends, and an elevated split-level lounge for groups of friends. Nurse Jackie has fi lmed several episodes at Locale, and Life on Mars hosted its wrap party here.

Take just one bite of any of Chef Davis’s dishes, and it’s no secret why the stars and locals keep coming back again and again. Delicately balancing artistry with fresh fl avors, the menu features gorgeous plates using only organic, locally sourced ingredients. Blackened Mayan shrimp is served like a Jenga tower over a log cabin of yucca fries and a moat of creole purée. Almond brownies are topped with creamy peanut butter, then blanketed with homemade whipped marshmallow and melted with the brûlée torch. Th e platings are as beautiful as they are delicious. Th e vibrant cocktail list includes a pumpkin pie martini that uses actual pumpkin purée. And the most beautiful part? No waiting for a train or cab to get home after.

Testaccio’s fettuccine tossed with mushrooms and green peas, wrapped in prosciutto

Locale

Testaccio Stepping through the front doors of Testaccio

and beyond the main bar into the dining room is almost like traveling onto a studio lot designed to replicate a Roman piazza. Gigantic earthenware pots, a multi-layered wine tower, and the glow from the brick pizza oven — all under dramatically vaulted ceilings — put the Rome in Romantic. Th is is not your typical Italian pizzeria. Pies here arrive with shaved black truffl es. Fresh pastas, made in-house, range from classic cacio e pepe to al dente fettuccine tossed with mushrooms and green peas, gift-wrapped in ribbons of prosciutto. In a stunning dining room, with a diverse and delicious menu, you can feel like a million bucks without spending it.

N ew York City, more than almost anywhere else in the world, generates a multifaceted and ever-evolving narrative. Locals chat with

each other about what they love and hate; tourists share photos and stories with friends; and people who have never been here project their own hopes and dreams, using the many fi lms and novels set here as a guide. In a sense, the city itself is its own greatest celebrity.

With the spotlight focused on Manhattan and Brooklyn, Queens - despite its size, burgeoning arts scene and diversity on so many levels - often gets short shrift. Th at’s usually fi ne with us locals, though. After all, not everyone needs to know about what makes our borough great — we can enjoy our home without all of the crowds.

Nevertheless Queens residents are constantly making an impact in their respective fi elds, from art to business to the culinary world. To show that they are participating in a long tradition of motivated and talented people from the borough, we compiled a list of celebrities and stars born in Queens. Get ready to be star-struck.

SEEN & HEARD

(AND TASTED)

Story + Photo BRADLEY HAWKS

A s home to two major studios, Western Queens, as

logic would have it, is also the site of several location

shoots for both the small and silver screen. Here’s a

roundup of recent and upcoming spots featuring the Boro.

PAST & PRESENT✪ Th e Quays (45-02 30th Ave, Astoria) was a location shoot

for the new Sherlock Holmes show, Elementary.

✪ When Anjelica Huston met her love interest at the East Village dive bar “Th e Bushwhack” in Smash, she was actually nowhere near the East Village, but rather at L.I.C. Bar (45-58 Vernon Blvd, LIC).

✪ Th e coff ee shop where Gossip Girl’s Vanessa worked was really Long Island City’s Communitea (47-02 Vernon Blvd, LIC).

✪ Crew members from Kaufman Astoria Studios are frequent regulars to Cafe Bar (32-90 36th St, Astoria) after work, where you can grab some meze and eavesdrop on industry gossip (now open 24 hours).

✪ Will Smith ordered 5 Napkin Burger (35-01 36th St, Astoria) when fi lming Men In Black, and Ben Stiller is another of the many celebrities who can be spotted here. A killer daily happy hour from 4 to 7 and 9 to close ($2 sliders, taquitos, hand rolls and $4 drafts) is a cheap and tasty way to spot a star.

BE ON THE LOOKOUTLook for Astoria-LIC in upcoming episodes of these shows:

✪ Orange is the New Black, starring Jason Biggs, will be fi lming at Astoria Kaufman and has already licensed several locations throughout Astoria, including 21st & Ditmars.

✪ BORO spotted Th e Good Wife fi lming an upcoming episode at Brooks 1890 Restaurant (2428 Jackson Ave, LIC).

✪ Gossip Girl recently licensed the streets at 23rd St & 45th Ave.

✪ 30 Rock shot near 30th Ave and 27th St in the middle of October.

A nyone who has spent some time in New York City these past

few years knows that Long Island City has garnered quite a reputation as a haven for artists. Its growing community of studios and galleries are making an impact citywide. What might come as a surprise, though, is that LIC has also become home to some of the city’s best and most diverse comedy shows. Of course, you won’t hear the names of any LIC venues from the pushy ticket vendors in Times Square, but our neighborhood is attracting the same top-caliber performers as any Manhattan comedy club. Steve Hofstetter, comedian and owner of LIC’s Laughing Devil Comedy Club, says that the area “is becoming the new hotbed for comedy in NYC… the scene is growing amazingly fast.”

If there was a single moment when LIC came into its own as a comedy spot, it would have to be when Jerry Seinfeld made a surprise visit to Th e Creek & Th e Cave in late August. Seinfeld introduced Colin Quinn, a Saturday Night Live star who was performing as part of his residency at the popular LIC performance space and Mexican restaurant.

While Seinfeld’s appearance was certainly a landmark, it was not without precedent. Renowned comedians have found the atmosphere and variety that LIC off ers refreshing; as Hofstetter says, “We have the hip alternative versions of the mainstream clubs.” And the quality performers have taken notice. Laughing Devil, which only opened last December, had Adam Ferrara from Rescue Me and Th e King of Queens headline a show over the summer. It was his only full set during that trip to NYC.

While LIC is attracting the big names and hosting the types of shows that are so popular at the well-known Manhattan venues, the neighborhood’s variety gives it a touch you can’t

fi nd elsewhere. According to Hofstetter, “there are so many diff erent things to see here… fans can walk around and fi nd any kind of show.”

For example, improv group Face Off Unlimited hosts a competition called Improvius Maximus at Th e Secret Th eatre on Friday nights. Teams compete to get the most laughs from the audience.

Laughing Devil has also created the Development Stage at nearby BreadBox Café. Th e stage often hosts open mics and off ers less recognized comedians the chance to perform. Pros also stop by to rehearse their acts.

Th e Chocolate Factory, known primarily as a dance, music and theater space, is also a great venue for sketch comedy from time to time.

With all of these exciting spots, and comics and audiences that seem intent on supporting and promoting them, it is easy to agree with Hofstetter when he says, “It can’t help but grow… the more LIC becomes a destination, the more people will talk to their friends when they see great shows here.” In fact, word of mouth was what brought Adam Ferrara to perform at Laughing Devil. His manager, who had attended a couple of shows, held the venue in high regard and recommended that Ferrara try it out for a gig.

Th e support for local business that we pride ourselves on in the neighborhood has played a signifi cant role as well. “We could not have expected the community support we got,” Hofstetter says. Th ose who haven’t done so already should check out a local comedy show. After all, if you’re still missing out on this scene, the joke’s on you.

MAT CLASSES“Our mat Pilates classes are focused on traditional

Pilates exercises performed on the mat, moving from fl oor work to standing exercises as you work on isolating and strengthening your upper and lower core muscles,” says Galjasevic. Practicing this routine, off ered at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, can tone your body, improve your posture and reduce stress.

HOT PILATESTh e addition of the heat element deepens the

stretch, increases heart rate and burns more calories than the room-temperature variety. If you put in the work now, you won’t be sweating a thing once bikini season rolls around.

REFORMER CLASSESTh e reformer, a complicated-looking contraption

invented by the fi tness regimen’s creator, Joseph Pilates, takes your workout to the next level “by providing resistance and a less stable base from which to perform the movements,” says Galjasevic. “Challenging your stability makes your core work harder!”

BARRE BLAST“If your main goal is weight loss, then our Barre

Blast class is probably the best option since it’s a combination of cardio and Pilates,” says Galjasevic. Incorporating the ballet barre and some light weight work makes for an intense but rewarding workout. You’ll be feeling the burn after this one!

THE YOGA ROOM

A s winter approaches, the temptation to hibernate runs high… but rather than succumb to the call of the couch, spend the cold months getting a hot bod! Celebrities such as Madonna,

Claire Danes and David Beckham rely on Pilates to keep them looking and feeling fabulous. Pilates takes a holistic approach to fi tness, emphasizing control and concentration over repetition. It focuses on strengthening the core and lengthening the muscle fi bers, making you leaner and stronger without adding muscle bulk.

“Strengthening the deepest layer of the abdominal muscles provides support for the spine, promotes fl exibility, and cultivates an overall sense of body awareness,” says Zhana Galjasevic, owner of the Yoga Room. “Once people discover Pilates, they’re often instantly hooked because it provides a full body workout without the damaging impact.” Whatever your fi tness level, Th e Yoga Room off ers classes that will have you red-carpet ready before the last snow melts.
