President Donna’s Message
Happy New Year Everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and
New Year’s Holiday! It seems like the days
just sped by so quickly. We had a wonderful
Holiday Party this year thanks to our
co-chairmen Margaret Watson and Young
Lauw pulling together a great event once again.
Thanks also to their committee for making it
another successful celebration and opportunity to gather together.
Our group managed to collect approximately 106 lbs of food for
the Benton County Food Bank. Great job everyone!!
By the way…if you know of anyone who is not yet a member of
the retiree’s group (or were formerly employed 10 yrs or more
though HP or Agilent) and would now like to join, we have a
perfect opportunity coming up in a few weeks. On January 20,
2012, we will be having a General Membership Meeting, where
we will hear from one of our local managers as well as see a DVD
from Corporate on what they have to share with the retirees. There
will also be a drawing for a new Touchscreen Computer as well
as other giveaways donated by HP. It is also a perfect time for our
members to renew their memberships and pay their dues ($10)
so they can begin receiving their quarterly newsletters which
announces our various activities or they can download a copy of
our membership form online at http://hpretirees.com/hpreco/
join.htm .
I have enjoyed being the president of the HPREC Club for the past
two years; I look forward to passing this roll onto Megha Shyam
our new president. I want to thank all the board members for their
support which is a group effort and I want you all to know that I
share our successes with the rest of this team! They are a
wonderful and amazing group of people! It has been my honor
to work with them.
Thank you again and I look forward to seeing you at the General
Membership Meeting January 20th.
Regards,
Donna Mann

Sympathy and
Health News
Since our last newsletter Rita Pinard, our Sunshine Coordinator
has sent cards to several members or family members
recovering from illness and surgery. We have had several mem-
bers who have lost loved ones since our last newsletter
that our club has also acknowledged.
A get well/thinking of you card:
Sent to Marian White
Marian White one of the early HPREC members and
newsletter editor/publisher for many years has
requested support and prayers from our club members.
She has been diagnosed with carcinoid tumors at a
very early stage of development. Treatment options
for this type of cancer are very limited. The number of tumors
and the distribution throughout Marian's lungs are such that
surgery is not practical, but their extremely slow growth makes
it possible to take time to consider what, if any, treatment is
appropriate. They will know more later this week as a to path
forward after they meet with her oncologist.
Sympathy cards were sent to the families of:
Barbara Betts and family, death of her husband Glenn Betts
Betsy Harrington and family, death of her husband Dan
Harrington.
Glenn Betts, 73 of Florence, OR. passed away
on Nov. 12, 2011. A celebration of life for
Glenn was held on December 3, 2011. Glen
was a long time HP employee along with his
wife Barbara.
Daniel Bolton Harrington died peacefully at
Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, he
was 84.
Following graduation from high school in
1945, he served in the U.S. Army of
Occupation in Germany and Belgium. Upon
his discharge, Dan enrolled at Albion College
in Albion, Mich., where he was a member of
Delta Tau Delta, the physics club, and the a
cappella choir. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1950 with a
Bachelor of Science degree in physics with a minor in math, and
he received his Master of Science degree in physics in 1951
from the University of Michigan.
Dec. 17, 1937 – Nov. 12, 2011
May 20, 1927 –
Dec. 14, 2011
January 2012 HPREC News, Oregon Edition 6
Dan's first job was with the Bendix Corporation of Detroit, where
he was instrumental in the development of the Bendix
Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer, and shares several patents.
During that time, he sang with the Rackham Symphony Choir. It
was there that he met Betsey. They were married on March 3,
1956, in East Hartford, Conn.
From 1957 to 1967, he was a product line manager for a variety
of instruments at Cary Instruments, Varian Associates and
Hewlett-Packard Co., during which time he presented several
papers to national scientific associations. In 1977, Dan began
working at the Corvallis Division of H-P, where he worked in the
Users' Library and did usability testing on handheld calculators,
ultimately becoming a technical writer for users' manuals, most
especially the HP-85.
Music was always a huge part of Dan's life. In addition to the
Rackham Symphony Choir, he sang in several church choirs, the
Schola Cantorum at De Anza College, and the Linn-Benton
Community College Community Chorale. A highlight of his
musical experience was joining the Albion College A Cappella
Choir as an alumnus, singing Faure's Requiem over Memorial
Day Weekend 2001 at Carnegie Hall.
Dan will be remembered for his sense of humor, his winning
smile, and his fun-loving nature. Even as his memory dimmed due
to Alzheimer's disease, he maintained his happy disposition and
his appreciative outlook. He was a loving husband, father and
grandfather, and a gentle man who will be lovingly remembered
by his family.
A private interment will take place at Locke Cemetery in
Corvallis.
Our prayers and support go out to all the above, and any others
we may have missed. If you know of someone ill or who has had
a death in their family, please let us know so we can include
them.

Corporate Communications and president of Skype. Prior to eBay,
Henry held a variety of senior positions at HBO. He began his
communications career at the public relations agency Hill and
Knowlton, based in New York
Most recently, Henry ran his own consulting business, providing
communications support and advice to clients such as H&R
Block. He was on the leadership team of my campaign for
governor of California in 2010 and has been involved in
government and political affairs throughout his career.
Henry has an outstanding track record in communications.
He played a pivotal role in building eBay’s brand during the
critical years following the company’s initial public offering.
And he shares our strong belief that it’s important to be
forthcoming in explaining what HP is up to and why. His
expertise will be extremely valuable to all of us as we work
together to describe our vision and strategy to customers, partners,
employees, and shareholders.
I want to thank Lynn Anderson for the excellent job she has done
as interim chief communications officer. Lynn made major
contributions to HP during the past few months, a period of hectic
change requiring strong communications skills and grace under
pressure. I know Henry is eager to work with Lynn, and her
continued leadership will be critical to the success of HP’s
communications efforts.
Reporting to Henry will be Lynn Anderson, vice president of
Communications; Mylene Mangalindan, director of Corporate
Media Relations; Gregg Melinson, vice president of Government
Affairs; and Gabi Zedlmayer, vice president of Global Social
Innovation and Environmental Sustainability.
Please join me in welcoming Henry to HP.

Presented by First Tech Federal Credit Union
As one of the first financial institutions in the world to offer
online banking to its members, we know how to navigate the
twists and turns of the Internet. Best of all, we’re always willing
to share that expertise with you. Below are some of the best
ways to protect yourself online, and why online banking is such
a great financial tool.
Passwords and security Your finances deserve the strongest password you can create.
While Online Banking is secure, even the best system is only as
solid as your login credentials. To keep your secret password
secret, all you need to do is follow a few simple rules:
Use a long password: Every time you add another number,
letter or character in uppercase and lowercase to your password,
the harder it will be for anyone to get into your accounts.
Write it down: If you cannot remember your password, the
chances of someone else guessing it are almost impossible.
Keep in a safe place.
Change your password every 90 days: Try to change yours
with every passing season.
Update your operating system (OS): Every OS is susceptible
to attacks. Luckily, computer makers and software developers
are always trying to stay one step ahead of would be criminals.
Update your OS every week and your virus protection will do
an even better job
Save time and money If you’ve ever used an online banking system before, you know
how easy, and addicting it can be to check your balances every
day. By knowing how much you have in any account at any
given time allows you to budget better, plan ahead and even
spend wiser.
Another benefit to online banking is the ease of transferring
funds from one account to another. Need to move money from
savings to checking to cover a car loan? No problem. All it
takes is a handful of clicks
Utilize all the tools Features such as electronic notices, online bill payer, e-bills and
more make life a lot easier…and safer. Also, these services
make paying bills and getting them a lot faster. By setting up
automatic, recurring payments you’ll wonder why you spent
hours every month paying bills, licking stamps and writing
checks.
Cut down on postal mail By keeping statements and other personal information out of
your home mailbox, you’re helping to protect your finances and
identity. Think about how much easier it is to break into a
postal mailbox versus your online banking account. All a
criminal needs is a crowbar or master key and a dark night to
get into that outdoor box. Your online accounts, on the other
hand, are always being monitored.

October 13, 2011 Par 3 or Miniature Golf and
Social Lunch at Izzy’s Hosted by Janet Dobbs
A group of avid golfers met at the Par 3 Golf Club, Highway 20
(541 753-6213). Four played the Par 3 while four others went
for the miniature golf, either way they all had a great time.
The retirees that didn't make it missed good weather, good
conditions on the Par 3 and a chance to get outside. We had the
place to ourselves! Where else can you have this much fun for
less than $6.00?
After golf we all met for a no-host lunch at 12:30 at Izzy’s,
waiting for us were a few non golfers who just wanted to join in
for lunch and socializing. A total of 15 enjoyed the day!
November 18, 2011 Social Luncheon New China
Buffet – Thirteen club members joined in for a wonderful
Chinese buffet luncheon Not a big group but we had the room
to ourselves and enjoyed the buffet.
December 4, 2011 HPREC Annual
Holiday Party Co-Chairs: Young Lauw and Margaret Watson
There is not a better way to spend a Sunday in early December
than be with over 120 of your friends celebrating the holiday
season! This is how we spent Sunday, December 4th at the
Adair Clubhouse. Every year we have an annual Holiday Party
with a delicious afternoon buffet to ring in the Holiday Season.
Valley Catering did their usual fantastic job with the
decorations and food, nicely decorated with Christmas lights,
garland, poinsettias and boughs which added to the wonderful
holiday atmosphere. All the tables were decorated with festive
holiday poinsettias.
Everyone gathered together enjoying appetizers, hot coffee and
cider while catching up with each other. For many, this is the
only time they see each other which makes it an even extra
special event. Everyone feasted on a buffet of roast beef,
chicken, salad, potatoes and squash and ended with delicious
chocolate cake. Nobody went home hungry!
During dinner we raffled off presents. The door prize winners
of the two printers were: Ellen Baron and Teresa and
Dan Hubnall. The gift certificates went to Thresea Carlson and
Ken and Linda Parker. We have reserved December 2, 2012 for
our Holiday Party and Young Lauw and Margaret Watson will
again co-chair with their wonderful committee.
Below are a few photos of the Holiday Party, go to the web to

Caring for yourself as you age
One thing you have learned by now is that life is full of change.
As your body and life are changing, how do you take care of
yourself? Eat, sleep hydrate, exercise and connect.
Eat – ―An apple a day keeps the doctor away.‖ This is still true
– so to speak. Your body is a finely tuned machine and it still
needs the right fuel to keep you going strong.
Sleep – Not too much and not too little. Six to 10 hours is just
right. Make sure to listen to your body, and relish those cat
naps.
Hydrate – Make sure you’re drinking enough water. Eight
8-ounce glasses a day is ideal. If this is a struggle, try mixing
a flavored drink powder with the water, with your doctor’s
approval. Just don’t be tempted to replace water intake with
coffee or soda.
Exercise – Even if your body has some limitations, you can
adapt exercises so that you’re still able to reap the many
benefits. Water aerobics, for example, is easy on joints. Be sure
to consult a doctor before beginning any new exercise
routines.
Connect – Physical health and mental health are intricately
intertwined, so it is critical to take care of your spirit. Check out
the local newspaper at the senior center or with friends to find
free events to connect with other people with similar
interests.
