Opening: (responsive)May God be with you all.
AND ALSO WITH YOU.5Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
YOUR FAITHFULNESS TO THE CLOUDS.6Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
YOUR JUDGMENTS ARE LIKE THE GREAT DEEP; YOU SAVE HUMANS AND ANIMALS ALIKE, O LORD. Psalm 36:5-6
Pastor: The animals of God’s creation inhabit the skies, the earth, and the sea. They share in the fortunes of human existence and have a large part in human life. Animals were saved from the flood and afterward made a part of the covenant with Noah (Gen. 9:9-10). The paschal lamb brings to mind the Passover sacrifice and the deliverance from the bondage of Egypt (Ex. 12:3-14). A donkey spoke God’s word to Balaam (Numbers 22:21-41). A giant fish saved Jonah (Jonah 2:1-11). Ravens brought bread to Elijah (I Kings 17:6). Animals share in Christ’s redemption of all of God’s creation (Romans 8:22-23). We ourselves have a deep bond with the animals that share our lives and homes. We therefore ask for God’s blessing on all animals, and especially this assembly.
From the Bible:Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good (Gen. 1:11-12).
And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” ...And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good (Gen. 1: 20-25).
(As we pray, place your hand of blessing on the dog that came with you today.)
Unison Prayer:“BLESSED ARE YOU, LORD GOD, MAKER OF ALL LIVING CREATURES. YOU CALLED FORTH FISH IN THE SEA, BIRDS IN THE AIR AND ANIMALS ON THE LAND. YOU INSPIRED ST. FRANCIS TO CALL ALL OF THEM HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS. TODAY WE ASK YOU TO BLESS ALL OF YOUR CREATION, AND ESPE-CIALLY THE ANIMALS WHO ARE GATHERED HERE IN THIS PLACE. BY THE POW-ER OF YOUR LOVE, ENABLE THEM TO LIVE ACCORDING TO YOUR PLAN. MAY WE ALWAYS PRAISE YOU FOR ALL YOUR BEAUTY IN CREATION. BLESSED ARE YOU, LORD OUR GOD, IN ALL YOUR CREATURES! AMEN.”

Life at Marty’s Place!On Any Given Day…
It’s been quite a journey since we began operations at Marty’s Place 3 years ago. On our journey we have stayed true to our mission - helping one dog/one owner–caregiver at a time. We have experienced such a rewarding mixture of happiness and some sadness, and through it all we have learned so much from every dog that enters our sanctuary, yet there is so much more to do. Sadly, the demand for a place like ours is greater than any of us would like to believe.
On any given day, we begin with our established routine. There are some days where that routine plays out uneventfully, but then there are other days where the unforeseen, the next challenge, or an unexpected joy or sadness occurs. When that happens, our incredible team of staff and volunteers rise to the occasion and respond to whatever is presented before us.
As we continue grow and evolve on this journey, we want to take a few moments to share some of the highlights, joys and sorrows we experience on any given day at the sanctuary.
Marty’s Place MissionOur premise at Marty’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary is that we are a facility where senior dogs come to live and be cared for in a safe, loving environment. We are committed to maintaining the health and well being of our residents for their remaining years either at the sanctuary, or where possible, placing them in a new adoptive home. Marty’s Place is uniquely different in that senior dogs, age 7 or older, which become sanctuary residents have a home at Marty’s Place for as long as they need it – and if they need it, for the rest of their lives.
Over the course of our operation, over 35 dogs have been part of our sanctuary family. The size of our family has fluctuated with 7 successful adoptions and the passing of 11 senior dogs that enjoyed their final chapter at Marty’s Place.
The Dogs of Marty’s PlaceSenior dogs lose their homes for a variety of reasons, mainly due their owners not being able to keep them. The situations can run the gam-ut from the death of a guardian, a new baby, loss of a job, relocation, change in work schedule, to health reasons (i.e. old age or allergies) or
-
even the novelty of owning a dog wearing off. Older dogs need homes just as badly as young ones, but because of their age finding them permanent loving homes is not as easy. So that’s where Marty’s Place fits - our sanctuary provides owners or caregivers of older dogs with a high quality, compassionate, family-like solution should they be faced with rehoming their dog.
On Any Given Day… With Staff & VolunteersAt Marty’s Place we have a small staff of truly dedicated employees that are core to our ability to provide consistent high quality care for our resident dogs. We do have our regular daily routine that starts with those basics of feeding, walking and cleaning. We start our days based on that routine, and then whatever comes our way, we respond. That could be taking a dog to the emergency room 10 minutes after arrival, adjusting meals when a dog doesn’t eat, developing alternate enrichment when it’s pouring outside. Our ability to respond to those situations or crises that arise on any given day is enhanced by the dedication and caring of our volunteers. We’ve had volunteers take residents for emergency care, help assimilate new dogs into our environment, assist with post-surgery care and rehabilitation, at the last minute fill in a gap on our schedule, help with our morning cleaning routine, mow yards, support fundraising and outreach efforts, and a myriad of other tasks.
A significant accomplishment for us this year was the development and cutover of a new web site. This was done completely with the contributions of volunteers. We can’t say it enough how grateful we are for the support of so many giving individuals and businesses.
We are blessed with volunteers who have been with us from the start and others who have joined us on the journey. Our incredible team of volunteers has steadily increased over the last 3 years as more community members learn about the specialness of Marty’s Place. If you are an individual animal lover or belong to a service-minded group interested in working with senior dogs, then volunteering at Marty’s Place could be the place for you. Community & Outreach InitiativesMuch focus was put on expanding our community outreach programs that now encompass the entire age spectrum, from the amazing contributions of our youth volunteers all the way up through seniors who benefit from loving senior dogs. We are proud to continue our relationship with Allentown High School and appreciate the students’ assistance with our daily routine.
-
An element of our dogs’ enrichment is having the opportunity for them to participate in activities outside the sanctuary. Some of our residents have had sleepovers, participated in yoga classes, outreach activities, and visits to adult living communities. We have also hosted senior groups at the sanctuary. Our residents always enjoy meeting and spending time with new friends.
Celebrating Our AdoptionsAs we have grown, we have also focused on our adoption program, whereby fulfilling our commitment to find permanent loving homes for a number of dogs in our care. Our increasing success in this area is not measured in terms of numbers, but rather by finding wonderful people who understand the joy and challenges of owning a senior dog and who are willing to open their heart and homes to provide kisses, cuddles, senior care and most of all endless love to a Marty’s Place dog.
As seniors, many of our dogs have prescribed health care plans that require medications or other routine care based on specific needs and this requires an even greater commitment by the adopting families.
We are grateful to the families that have opened their hearts and homes to former Marty’s Place residents:
Quincy – 13-year-old BeagleTeaker – 11-year-old Labrador
Bella – 10-year old Shepherd mixCocoBean – 10-year-old Labrador
Sasha – 8-year-old HuskySierra – 13-year old Chow mixEve – 11-year-old Pomapoo
Building Fond MemoriesSadly, part of what we do is saying good-bye to our cherished family members. Sometimes we can prepare as we watch a resident slow down or conditions progress. But then there are those circumstances that come on suddenly and momentarily leave us shocked or numb. This year seemed especially challenging as we lost dogs that were long-term residents and part of the fabric of Marty’s Place:
Louie – Two years, our Ambassador, gentle giant and educatorAce – Two and a half years, Marty’s Place was his only real home
Cali – Two years, quiet & unassuming, loved by everyoneShady – One year, our pint-sized bundle of cuteness
Jessie – Our matriarch at 17 years old Blondie – Our big teddy bear
-
There is sadness as we say our goodbyes because for every dog that enters Marty’s Place, we embrace them as if they have been our own for many years. We focus on knowing that for the time these family members were with us, we gave them comfort, and treated them with the respect and dignity every dog deserves, especially at their end of life.
Caring for Marty’s Place residentsAs dogs age their care needs increase either because of the development of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, or acute conditions such as degenerative disc issues, cancer, etc. To sustain the required level of care for our aging residents, we rely heavily on and are incredibly grateful for the generosity of Marty’s Place supporters.
Your contributions make it possible for senior dogs without homes to live in the safe, loving, family-like environment here at Marty’s Place and receive the physical care and companionship, medical attention, exercise, and affection they need to thrive 365 days a year.
On behalf of our residents, we thank you for your support and for joining us to celebrate senior dogs. Our hope is you have a greater appreciation of our journey and our ongoing commitment, every day, to providing the best possible care to each and every dog that joins the Marty’s Place family.
