An Introduction To Internet-Based Cloud Storage Solutions

Cloud storage is becoming increasingly popular nowadays as people utilize a wider range of internet

connected devices and look to have access to their files “on demand.”

In its simplest form, cloud storage is just the storage of data on a remote server which is generally

maintained by a third party. Instead of storing the data on your own computer, you save it to a

remote database which is accessed by your computer via your internet connection.

My Favorite (FREE) Service – Dropbox!

Dropbox is, in my view, one of the easiest synced cloud storage solutions for my needs. There are

other SIMILAR services such as Sugarsync however, for some reason, I just like the way Dropbox

works and its ease of use.

Why Dropbox?

Once you’ve used Dropbox, you’ll be hooked. This great free service allows you to backup all your

files and access the most recent versions of your files from multiple computers. You can even access

them from computers without the Dropbox application installed via their online interface.

Another advantage of using the service is that you can easily restore to previous versions of a file or

document. Everything is very easy to use and you’ll love the fact that you can access your files from

anywhere.

Setting Up Your Dropbox Account

Step #1 – Open Your Web Browser And Go To The Dropbox Website

Open up your web browser and go to the Dropbox website via this link

Step #2 – Create Your FREE Dropbox Account

Simply complete the form on the Dropbox website and click the “Create Account” button after

agreeing to the Dropbox Terms Of Service.

Step #3 – Download The Dropbox Application

After creating your account, the Dropbox setup application will begin downloading.

Step #4 – Download The Dropbox Installation Application

Click “Save File” to download the Dropbox installation application.

Step #5 – Run The Dropbox Installation Application

Double-click the Dropbox.exe file to start installing the Dropbox application on your computer.

Step #6 – Click “Run” To Commence The Installation

Click the “Run” button

Step #7 – Allow Any Dropbox-Related Firewall Exceptions

Depending on your firewall software / anti-virus software, you may need to allow some exceptions

so that Dropbox can install correctly. Please review each one and ensure that it is related to the

installation of Dropbox. If it is Dropbox-related, then it’s fairly safe to assume that you can “Allow” it.

Step #8 – Allow The Installation Process To Complete

Allow a minute or so for Dropbox to complete the installation process. You should get notification,

as shown in the image below, once you have successfully installed the software.

Step #9 – Select The Correct Option

Be sure to select the “I already have a Dropbox account” option

Step #10 – Log In To Dropbox

Enter your email address and password (that you used to setup your Dropbox account in Step #2)

and then click “Next”

Step #11 – Select Your Dropbox Package

For most people the 2GB plan is sufficient (especially if you tell your friends about it and earn “bonus

space”) however some people will want to upgrade to a larger plan. Choose the plan that best suits

your needs and click “Next”

NOTE: You can upgrade at any stage in the future if you decide later that you need more space.

Step #12 – Choose Your Setup Type

For most people, this will be the “Typical” setup. Once selected, click “Install.”

Step #13 – Start Using Dropbox (Or Take A Quick Tour)

You’re pretty much done now! Either start using Dropbox by clicking “Skip tour” or take a quick tour

of some of the key features if you wish by clicking “Next.”

The Dropbox service can be expanded (by upgrading to a paid package OR) by telling friends about
