    SOE Operations Engineer

    Who are Chartered Engineers?

Chartered Engineers are characterised by their ability to

develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems,

using new or existing technologies, through innovation,

creativity and change. Commanding respect, they work

at the most senior levels in all sectors of engineering

    and business.

CEngs might develop and apply new expertise,

promote advanced design methods, introduce new and

more efficient production techniques, marketing and

construction concepts, or pioneer new engineering

    services and management methods. Chartered

Engineers are engaged in technical and commercial

leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills.

CEng registration is rarely achieved before the age

of 26, and the Engineering Council estimates only one

quarter to one third of engineers with relevant academic

qualifications have been able to register. In short, this

means those who are registered have an edge in anincreasingly challenging professional environment.

    In addition, CEng is

    recognised internationally,

    being underwritten by the

    Washington Accord, and

    an EU Directive. This

    means your standing will

    usually be accepted in

    countries including the

    USA, Australia and often in

    the Far East and Middle

East. Even though youmay never need to work in

    these countries, you and

    your employers can

    demonstrate

    professionalism and

    competence to overseas

    purchasers of your

    product or service.

Registration has numerous benefits forboth employers and individuals

The post-nominal CEng carries considerable prestige

and clearly indicates you are a significant player in the

world of engineering and technology. Registration sets

engineers apart from those without it, proving

    knowledge, understanding and competence. In

particular, registration demonstrates a commitment to

professional standards and to developing proficiency

helping you carry out required tasks more effectively.

    Recognition of your expertise

and hard workCommanding respect, those with CEng status perform

vital roles in every engineering sector and have greater

    influence within industry and society.

Registration links you to a professional engineering

    institution SOE. Your membership complements

registration, which provides you with the qualifications

to reassure employers you know your job. Such

    recognition opens doors professionally, increasing

    opportunities and demonstrating to employers

experience, drive and commitment. Registration also

shows the CEng holder has fulfilled the competence

requirements of a globally recognised benchmark.

Similarly, surveys have repeatedly shown that

Chartered Engineers rapidly achieve higher earnings

than their unregistered counterparts and the pay gap

    is widening.

    Value to business

Employers of registered Chartered Engineers have the

assurance of knowing employees have had their

competence assessed, their credentials verified and

their commitment to continuing professional develop-

ment established. This translates into highly skilledemployees, contributing to a reduction in overall

    company risk.

CEngs have gained recognition from their peers as

meeting UK and international standards for knowledge

and experience. This conveys that your staff know how

to work efficiently and to high standards which is

good for your employer and, more importantly, your

customers. Maintaining registration ensures CEngs are

exposed to new developments within their profession

and it also means they are governed by a professional

code of conduct. Furthermore, employee motivation will

increase due to your support for their professional

standing. Businesses also benefit as, increasingly,

tendering or post-tender contract compliance requires

key members of the project team to have professional

    registration.

    One of the

    most valuable

    benefits of SOE

    membership

    is that YOU can

    gain professional

    registration withthe Engineering

    Council.

    Commanding

    respect, those

    with CEng status

    perform vital

    roles in every

    engineeringsector and have

    greater influence

    within industry

    and society.

    SOE Operations Engineer

Jeffrey Yungshares his storyI started my engineering career over twenty

years ago and have studied both electrical

engineering and building services. In 2001, I was

awarded a first class honours degree in Building

    Services Engineering from Hong Kongs

Polytechnic University and a Masters Degree in

    Facility Management in 2004.

Like many engineers, it was my dream to be

registered as a Chartered Engineer. Chartered

Engineers are recognised as the engineering elite,

and their expertise and status is highly respected.

CEng status enabled me to head Facility

    Management for the innovative Cyberport

    development, an integrated business, technology

and residential community at Hong Kongs Telegraph

Bay. Leading a large team, we won many awards inrecognition of our achievements in air quality,

property management, health and safety and

    energy saving.

Benefiting from CEng status, I learnt to develop

and apply new technologies in energy saving and

introduce more efficient production techniques in

facility management. My technical and commercial

leadership and interpersonal skills have been

significantly improved since registration, due to

Continuous Professional Development and my active

    role within the Society.

Jeffrey Yung has been Associate Director for Colliers

International Agency Limited since 2008. As head of

the real estate management services (REMS)technical section, he looks after all technical issues

and is responsible for setting up and standardising

technical documents, systems and procedures, as

well as budget, project and environmental

    management.

Jeffrey is also one of the founding members and

Chairman of SOE Hong Kong Regional Group.

    CASE STUDY

    CEng registration

    has strengthened

    my ability to

    develop solutions

    to engineering

    problems. It has

    improved my

    career prospects

    and knowledge,as well as

    enriching my

    personal

    network.

A companyperspectiveLaing ORourke is an engineering enterprise,

and we regard our Chartered Engineers as the

backbone of our engineering capability. This is

why we have recently completely overhauled our

    graduate development programme for engineers.

All graduate engineers joining the business are

expected to join the programme, which for most

takes them on the Progressive Route to Chartered

Engineer after four years. Looking ahead, we are

planning to accelerate progression to Chartered

status whilst offering our most able graduates further

    learning opportunities.

Arrangements can be made for graduates to

train to the UK Standard for Professional Engineering

    Competence (UKSPEC) in other engineering

disciplines if required. All engineering graduates also

complete the 30-month Laing ORourke Group

Graduate Development Programme in parallel with

their professional studies, introducing them to thenew reality of the Laing ORourke Way.

For Laing ORourke, Chartered status is important as

it demonstrates commitment to the engineering

profession - it takes effort to get there and the

company value the qualities of self-discipline,

determination and energy which success at

    Chartered Professional Review demands.

    Secondly, a Chartered Engineer has

    demonstrated proven knowledge, understanding

and competence. Our clients appreciate our

Chartered Engineers have had their competence

    assessed and verified.

Finally, it maintains the foundations of the

excellent engineering capability at Laing ORourke -

    as Chartered Engineers further develop

    professionally,

    becoming future

    business leaders.
