Introduction

• Google Analytics is a service provided by Google in order to monitor a website’s traffic.

• Launched by Google in November 2005.• Web traffic is the amount of data sent and

received by visitors to a website.

Types of Web Traffic

1) Direct traffic: When a user visits a website by specifying its explicit URL then, he is a direct visitor and such a traffic to that website is a direct traffic.

2) Organic traffic: When a website is being visited by a user after querying the search engine using keywords of his interest. One way to increase organic traffic to a website is through SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

3) Referral traffic: People who find your site through external links. For example, you publish a blog post which has a link to your website and if someone clicks on it and decides to follow that link, then that person is considered to be a referral visitor and the traffic so generated is referral traffic.

4) Social traffic: Gaining followers through various social medias such as facebook, twitter, blog posts, etc.

Why is Google Analytics Important to Your Website?

• Where your visitors are coming from – very important aspect if you’re targeting a specific audience.

• How your visitors found your website – this is very important in determining which of your efforts are paying off. It shows if visitors found your site directly, through a referral from another website (ex: Twitter, Facebook), or from search engines.

• Web browsers were used by your visitors – knowing which web browsers your visitors used allows you to know on which browsers you should keep your focus on.

• What were the keywords used by visitors in the search engines to get to your website – this is very crucial for SEO. Knowing which keywords people are searching for to get to your site determines if you are on the right track.
