How Smart Phones change mobile Networks for ever David Owens Network Performance Manager, Telefonica O2 Slide 2 Areas we are covering Apple re-invents the phoneThe smart phone paradigm Impact of Data growthEvolving our NetworkL.T.E London Trials 2011Key thoughts Slide 3 Apple Re - invents the phone in 2007! Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes every thing! Wide screen iPod with touch control Revolutionary mobile Break through internet communication device iPod + Phone + Internet are you getting it! And they called it the iPhone Apple had reinvented the phone, and we all know that now. Key to Apples success was it made the iPhone both easy to use and smart Slide 4 The Perfect Storm The iPhone made using the internet really easy and fast Break through App Store started to give customer easy ways to tell there friends what they were up to. Coupled with all you can use data tariffs Social Networking was born This created a storm of access attempts And lots and lots of traffic Slide 5 Smart phones are driving radical data traffic growth Date Traffic Grew really fast ~33 times since June 2008... Data Traffic continues to growth at a pace, doubling approximately every 6 months Slide 6 Impact on the London network 2009 Data traffic growth started to impact voice calls Data performance falling below target We were receiving negative comments in press Customer satisfaction levels questioned O2 wanted to give our customers the network they deserved We needed to get the right capacity in the right places for our customers. Slide 7 Advanced thinking in 2009 the smart phone paradigm shift Slide 8 Pioneering new Offload strategies New solutions allow us to understand traffic & performance to a building resolution. Data traffic hotspot at UCL student lodgings. Understand & solve complex areas, challenging radio environments Huge flow of people at rush hours High numbers of VIP corporate customers First UK operator to rollout 6 sectors sites: 40% capacity uplift, 25% more connections Microcell must be close to the source of traffic, giving 250% capacity uplift per square kilometer O2 task force established trialling new ways of working. Nominated for 2010 Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award. The programme continues to push new boundaries Slide 9 O2UK Radio Network Evolution 2008-2015 2009: 1 st UK and TEF Operator to Industrialise 6 sector sites for 3G 2009: 1 st UK and TEF Operator to Industrialise Microcell for 3G 2009: 1 st UK and TEF Operator to launch LTE2600 trial network 2010: 1 st UK and TEF Operator to launch UMTS900 trial network 2010: 1 st UK UK and TEF Operator to make LTE800 call 2011: 1 st UK UK and TEF Operator to commercially launch UMTS900 service 2011 Plans: Wi-Fi, Femto, HSPA+(21&42Mbps), LTE2600 London trial, Metrocells Slide 10 10 REC/09/099, Draft B, 17/12/09Slide 10 Confidential Limited to 7 macrocells within 1x1km area 3G Macrocell 2100 MHz (1) 1 st carrier 2100 MHz (2) 2 nd carrier O2UK Radio Network 2010 (Single Layer 3G) Slide 11 11 REC/09/099, Draft B, 17/12/09Slide 11 Confidential Busiest 200x200m area requires 6 microcells plus 3 carrier picocells/public femto cells Busy areas require 50m radius microcells Limited to 7 macrocells within 1x1km area Microcell range limited to 150m due to building loss and corner loss All microcell deployed with 4 carriers (2xU2100, 1xU900 & 1xLTE2600). 2600 MHz Macrocell Microcell Picocell 2100 MHz (1) 2100 MHz (2) 900 MHz (1) 900 MHz (2) O2UK Radio Network 2013 (Heterogeneous 3G/4G) Slide 12 Small Cells, Femtocells & Wi-Fi Small Cells are required to cope with x5-10 capacity requirements 2011: O2 Wi-Fi Free Public Wi-Fi deployment 2011: VIP/SME Femtocell Pilot, Corporate Trial 2011: Metrocell (Public Femto, Street Furniture 3G/4G Trial) 2012: Metrocell deployment Slide 13 Preparing for The Mobile Data Olympics How weve tackled it Twickenham Rugby Stadium, West London is our Proving Ground. Solution: Higher order sectorisation within Stadia - another first in the UK Result: A template from which we can confidently build high capacity solutions at all key Olympic venues C42203 S1 C42206 S3 C42203 S3 C42204 S1C42204 S2 C42203 S2 C42203 S3 C42206 S2 C42206 S1 C47295 S2 SECTOR 1 SECTOR 2 SECTOR 3 S 4 S 5 S 6 S7S7 S 8 SECTOR 9 SECTOR 10 SECTOR 11 S 12 S 13 S 14 S 15 S 16 L4L4 L5L5 SECTOR 19 SECTOR 18 SECTOR 17 SECTOR 24 SECTOR 25 SECTOR 26 S 30 S 29 S 28 S 27 S 20 S 21 S 22 S 23 4 sectors 30+ sectors Target: Increase Twickenham bowl coverage from 4 to 30-40 sector (x10 capacity) Slide 14 O 2 Femto LTE London Operational Trials 2011 Target high data uses/corporates in Central London to offload data from 3G LTE trial will allow backhaul of O2 Wi-Fi hotspots in 2011. All theyll need is a power socket (literally plug & play) LTE is the future, but handsets/traffic will take time to come. However can make it sweat from day 1 and offload our 3G network through novel 2G/3G offload techniques as described above - to be trialled in 2011 Smaller cells for 3G are the future. Backhaul is the problem. LTE to be trialled as a solution to small cell (2G/3G/4G) backhaul. Friendly Users Slide 15 O2 network coverage Slide 16 It was nice to get a pat on the back, but the hard work continues Slide 17 Key thoughts Apple did reinvent the Phone Smart phones, App & Social Networking have changed the mobile industry forever 3G will continue to evolve to deliver faster speeds but user experience is key Location-aware data provides customer-centric decision making & network performance maximising network investment Need to push the technical boundaries for ours customers We now have new technology to take our performance from cell level to building resolution, and this will be key capability for the future data needs of our customers
