Apple Re - invents the phone in 2007!
• Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes every thing!
• Wide screen iPod with touch control
• Revolutionary mobile
• Break through internet communication device
• iPod + Phone + Internet are you getting it!
• And they called it the iPhone
• Apple had reinvented the phone, and we all know that now.
• Key to Apple’s success was it made the iPhone both easy to use and smart
![Page 4: NextGen 2011 Workshop Dinesh Patil TELEFONICA O2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060119/5590475a1a28ab362c8b45b2/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
The Perfect Storm!
• The iPhone made using the internet really easy and fast!
• Break through App Store started to give customer easy ways to tell there friends what they were up to.
• Coupled with all you can use data tariffs
• Social Networking was born
• This created a storm of access attempts
• And lots and lots of traffic !
![Page 5: NextGen 2011 Workshop Dinesh Patil TELEFONICA O2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060119/5590475a1a28ab362c8b45b2/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Smart phones are driving radical data traffic growth Date Traffic Grew really fast ~33 times since June 2008 . . .
Data Traffic continues to growth at a pace, doubling approximately every 6 months

Advanced thinking in 2009 – the smart phone paradigm shift
![Page 7: NextGen 2011 Workshop Dinesh Patil TELEFONICA O2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060119/5590475a1a28ab362c8b45b2/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Impact on the London network 2009
• Data traffic growth started to impact voice calls!
• Data performance falling below target!
• We were receiving negative comments in press
• Customer satisfaction levels questioned
• O2 wanted to give our customers the network they deserved
• We needed to get the right capacity in the right places for our customers.
![Page 8: NextGen 2011 Workshop Dinesh Patil TELEFONICA O2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060119/5590475a1a28ab362c8b45b2/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Pioneering new Offload strategies!
New solutions allow us to unde rs tand t r a f f i c & performance to a building resolution. Data traffic hotspot at UCL student lodgings.
• Understand & solve complex areas, challenging radio environments
• Huge flow of people at rush hours • High numbers of VIP corporate
customers
First UK operator to rollout 6 sectors sites: 40% capacity uplift, 25% more connections
Microcell must be close to the source of traffic, giving 250% capacity uplift per square kilometer
O2 task force established– trialling new ways of working. Nominated for 2010 Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award. The programme continues to push new boundaries!

Preparing for The Mobile Data Olympics How we’ve tackled it
• Twickenham Rugby Stadium, West London is our Proving Ground.
• Solution: Higher order sectorisation within Stadia - another first in the UK
• Result: A template from which we can confidently build high capacity solutions at all key Olympic venues
• Small Cells: are the best way to carry large amounts of Network Traffic in a small area!

The Future - LTE London Operational Trial in 2011
Target high data uses/corporates in Central London to offload data from 3G
LTE trial will allow backhaul of O2 Wi-Fi hotspots in 2011. All they’ll need is a power socket (literally plug & play)
LTE is the future, but handsets/traffic will take time to come. However can make it sweat from day 1 and offload our 3G network through novel 2G/3G offload techniques as described above - to be trialled in 2011
Smaller cells for 3G are the future. Backhaul is the problem. LTE to be trialled as a solution to small cell (2G/3G/4G) backhaul.
