Some friends of mine (Actually their daughter, Katie Crain, a high school student) dug this hammer up in their yard a few weeks ago, don’t know how long ago it was buried, but the houses on their lot are less than 40 years old. The area was used for a marine camp during WWII. It appears that the handle has petrified in this time - it is a hollow handle with a steel pin running up to the head. If you are interested in a higher resolution picture of it, let me know.
