Houstonians never seem to tireof remarking about the arrivalof fall weather. Crisp, sunny

days spur us to get the blood flowing, which explains the abundance of fallevents across the city. From markets toclasses to home tours, the calendar isfilled with interesting adventures forjust about anyone.

October is a huge month for hometours and a fun time for the staff hereat Houston House & Home. Each yearwe work to coordinate coverage of thevarious home tours around town andtackle the tough task of selecting justone home for our cover story. Withthe Houston Solar Tour, EastwoodHistoric Home Tour, Galveston EastEnd Garden Tour and the AIAHouston Home Tour happening thismonth, we had many interestinghomes to consider.

Surveying these choices made usrealize the diverse strengths of theHouston area. Among the homes weconsidered were homes located in his-toric neighborhoods, preservation tri-umphs, new homes built with innova-tive technology and outstandingachievements in design. We selectedthe Modern home of Gavin and LauraJones, which is one of the eight homeson this year’s AIA Home Tour. The

Joneses worked with StudioMETArchitects, who did both the designand construction for this unique homein a charming section of historicMidtown.

While you can always pick upHouston House & Home at Houston-area Kroger and H-E-B stores, thismonth you can find the magazine atthe home tours listed above, as well ashome-enhancing events around town, such as the Houston Garden Club’sBulb & Plant Mart, the Bayou CityArt Festival Downtown and the UrbanMarket Houston Antique Show.

This month’s cooler weather makesgetting out to these events quite enjoy-able and might just motivate you toembark on your next home-improve-ment journey. Whether that adventureis a room makeover, garden project orwhole-house upgrade you can findhelpful information and design inspi-ration in every issue of Houston House& Home.

October is Kitchen & Bath Month

The weather is cooling down, and the social scene is heatingup. People are thinking about the upcoming holidays, enter-taining friends and family in… their kitchen. They know that

good food, fun and fond memories are made in… their kitchen. They’re also thinking about (oh no)… their kitchen, and how badlyin need of remodeling it is. Well, it’s probably too late to plan, design, order and construct a major kitchen remodel before the holi-days this year. But don’t stress over it. Just give yourself the gift of anew kitchen for next year, and start the process after the holidays, orsooner.

THE PROCESS is complicated, and enough time should beallowed to properly think about and make decisions that you’ll haveto live with for a long time. The kitchen is typically the single mostexpensive room to remodel in the home. All the more reason itdeserves thoughtful planning. While the process is complicated, thesolution is simple,

CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL. Don’t try to do it yourself. You’ll save time and money by consulting a professional who can helpyou make the best decisions and avoid costly mistakes. KitchenDesigners who are certified by the National Kitchen & BathAssociation have passed stringent exams and have proven experiencein kitchen and bath design and installation. The creative designers at

Kitchen & Bath Concepts consider the NKBA’s guidelines for properwalkways, clearances, appliance placement, etc., for a functional, effi-cient kitchen that is beautiful as well. The mingling of your ownideas and preferences with the experienced knowledge of a profes-sional Kitchen Designer will always generate the best results. Workwith a professional who “gets” you and understands what you wantand need, and then, let the fun begin.

CABINETRY is critical. The cabinet styling and finish usually setsthe style and palette for the entire kitchen. For the first time ever,Traditional styling is not the majority preference. Most people nowsay they prefer Transitional, while Contemporary is a growing prefer-ence. Cabinet lines are getting cleaner and less complicated, withminimum molding detail. Savvy consumers are selecting sleek slabdoor styles, or simple framed doors on frameless factory-manufac-tured cabinetry. Wood colors are getting lighter, and Oak is making acomeback. But it’s not your Mama’s grainy Golden Oak. This Oak isoften rift-cut, and being used on slab or frame door styles, often ingreyed hues. Easy-care textured wood-grain laminate and melamineare available that are difficult to tell from the real thing. Engineeredexotic woods offer interesting and unusual colors and textures, andthere are more glossy wood and paint finishes than previously.Sometimes glossy-finished cabinets are mixed with matte finishes. It’s more about personalization than ever before.

Custom kitchen features Wood-Mode cabinetry with glass doors, a custom mosaic backsplash and walnut island top.

Page 11: Houston House & Home Magazine October 2012 Issue

Cabinetry can take up a sizeable chunk of thebudget—and it’s so worth it. Custom-factory-manufactured cabinetry will have a better,longer-lasting finish than anything that getsapplied at the job site. Factory finishes areapplied and baked on in a controlled environ-ment—no dust or bugs in the air there, and nopaint drips either. You’ll never have to refinish orrepaint, and you’ll have many more choices ofwood species, finishes, colors, drawer and cabinetconstruction options, storage accessories, etc. toselect from. You can view true samples of quali-ty-controlled finishes in a friendly showroom, and know that what you see is what you’ll get.Shelves are adjustable, doors and drawers willclose smooth and quiet, and drawers will usuallyhave full-extension guides as standard. There aredifferent levels of quality—you should buy thebest you can afford. You’ll be glad you did. Mostpeople’s post-kitchen remodel regret is that theyshould have spent a little more and got whatthey really wanted. Some manufacturers of finecustom cabinetry, like Wood-Mode, even offerlifetime warranties.

ANSWERS TO COMMONQUESTIONS:• How much does a new kitchen cost? Morethan they say on TV remodeling shows, wheremost labor and materials are donated.Remodeling Magazine’s annual “Cost vs.Value Survey” says that in 2011 in theHouston area, a minor kitchen remodel cost$20,321.00. A major midrange kitchenremodel was $54,064.00, and a majorupscale kitchen remodel was$106,736.00.00.

• How long does it take to remodel akitchen? Much longer than it appears to onTV, where it really takes a lot longer than itappears. (One program featured a kitchenremodel begun for a couple who just learnedshe was expecting—she was about to deliverwhen they finished.) It usually takes three orfour months, depending on size and scope ofthe project—it can be more, or less.

• Where do I begin? Consult a KitchenProfessional to avoid mistakes, save time andmoney. Don’t compromise on good planningand design, or on hard-to-replace permanentcomponents like cabinets, countertops and per-manent plumbing.

Texture and color tune up a guest roomBY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

Comfort & Style

Homeowner Lynn Sessions is no stranger to photo shoots for my columnin Houston House & Home. First referred to me by Dollie Martinez of ICMGranite, HH&H featured Lynn’s kitchen in my column in the September2008 issue “From Flood to Fantastic”, her guest bathroom in the December2011 issue, “European Flair”, and her master bathroom in July 2012, “SuiteSuccess”. On these pages, we now feature her guest bedroom.

Lynn was stuck. “The guest bedroom had no character, no window treat-ments, old carpet and had no coordination with the colors in the rest of thehouse,” Lynn explained. To get the Old World, Tuscan look she was after, Isuggested she use a restful blue as an accent color in the guest bedroom. Shewas a little worried about using blue, but I assured her that if the carpet, curtains and wall color flowed with the rest of the house the restful bluewould work with the golds, deep purples and burgundies used in the rest ofthe house.

Dolly recommended the contractor Lynn used, Dick Leiker at Wood-N-Stone (http://www.woodandstoneremodeling.com). He did the work on allthe spaces, including the guest bedroom, and installed the textured carpetand painted the walls.

“When we remodeled the kitchen it caused the rest of the house to lookeven more dated, so it was a domino effect. The entire house needed to befreshened up and modernized”, Lynn said.

TIP: You can use a different color in your home as long as the flooring, curtains and wall color flows with other rooms in the house.

AFTER: (Left) Installing custom-linedcurtains and havingthe existing chairreupholstered provid-ed light control, priva-cy and fabric coordi-nation with the newbedding.

BEFORE: Withoutlined window treat-ments, sleeping inwas impossible andprovided zero privacy. The side table wasbare and neededaccessories.

BEFORE: The absence of color on the walls, oldcarpet, oddly hung artwork, dark bedding andlack of accessories were spoiling this guestbedroom’s looks.

AFTER: (Left) Painting the walls in Sherwin-Williams “Croissant” and installing Shaw“Unique Beauty” carpet in “Silk” added greatcolor and texture to the room. Pottery BarnBlythe Paisley Organic (mixed with custom) bed-ding added restful blues to the color scheme. An antique wood carving from BalinskasImports and a framed wine label brought backfrom Paris add interest.

before && after

Lynn found some Pottery Barn beddingshe loved and we used that as the jumpingoff point for all the colors in the room.Bringing along the shams and paint colors(Sherwin-Williams “Croissant” for wallsand “Dover” for trim) Lynn met me atInterior Fabrics and we selected a darkerneutral faux silk for the curtains that coor-dinated with the bedding, and a light bluetextured upholstery fabric for reupholster-ing her existing chair and for the match-ing throw pillow on the bed.

Her Old World design style dictatedthe oil-rubbed bronze color for the curtainhardware and brass lamp, which waspainted with Modern Masters MetallicPaint Collection in ME525 “EnglishBrown”. Since Interior Fabrics has theleast expensive drapery hardware in town,we selected a Mahogany wood finish withsimple ball finials and my drapery installerhung them for her.

TIP: When hanging curtains, place the hemmed curtains on the rod andhold the rods high on the wall, mark the desired height of the rod with apencil (I like the hems to “break” on the floor 1/2-inch), remove the panelsand then install.

Lynn loved my emailed homework assignments because they allowed her towork at her own pace with precise instructions of what needed to be done. Shecould also email me with questions she had along the way to clarify things. “Iwould not know what sources to use, like your drapery and upholstery work-rooms — or where to get art framed (you even reminded me on the mat colorand to use coupons at Michael’s) or purchased, like the imported Indonesiancarved piece over the bed from Balinskas Imports,” she explained. “I have rec-ommended your sources to many people. I really enjoyed working with youbecause with you, no question is a stupid question! You listened to all my ideasand told me if they were good, bad, or too expensive. You put my vision onpaper and made it a reality. I could not have done this without you,” Lynnadded.

She recommends having a professional help, particularly if you are busy ordon’t have much time due to job demands. “Even simple changes can make aworld of difference in the feel of a room and can make it very stylish,” sheexplained. “I was a little surprised at how much work you said it would take to

just ‘change the finishes’. I needed someone like you to make me think aboutand accomplish all the details to make a complete room, with sources onwhere to buy things and the precise size and color of matting for artwork. Inthis room we were able to use some wall decorations I had bought for otherrooms and had never used and prints I had picked up on my travels to Greeceand Bermuda”, she explained.

“I just love the room and how unique it is,” Lynn explains. “ It looks won-derful and is so relaxing. I’ve had guests that say they want to take the bedhome with them!”

AFTER: (Above) A vertical ladderback chair brought in from another room and the addition ofa large-scaled trunk and basket from Target filled with guest towels and toiletries helped bal-ance the large armoire. Michael’s framed the artwork from the owner’s travels to Greece andBermuda, which added personality to the room, as did tabletop accessories brought in fromthe living room bookcases.

A tale of love, urban density and the nuances of a neighborhood BY SANDRA COOK

PHOTOS BY YOONCHUL YOU, STUDIOMET ARCHITECTS

The Dreamfrom the Sidewalk

As renters, it’s often easier to live inside

the city, close to professional pursuits and

cultural pastimes. As a result, renters often

fall in love with their neighborhood, only to

have to leave it behind when they are

ready to buy a home.

Gavin and Laura Jones met while they were both renting inMidtown. It’s difficult to tell which came first, their love for eachother or their love of their historic neighborhood. The couple fre-quently explored the oak-lined blocks on the western edge ofMidtown as they walked their Yorkshire Terrier along the shadedstreetscape. The magnificent oaks date back to the early 20th-cen-tury, when the area was first developed as one of Houston’s first res-idential neighborhoods.

While the area is home to several large, mid-rise apartment prop-erties built in recent decades, the serene ambiance beneath the treebranches and the humble scale of the old city blocks provides aninstant connection to the century past.

As Gavin and Laura took their neighborhood walks, they oftenadmired a vacant lot next to a single family home and dreamed ofone day building a house on the lot.

“We love this neighborhood,” says Laura. “When we saw it wasfor sale we jumped on it right away. I don’t think anyone elsehad a chance to bid on it.”

Laura and Gavin Jones selected StudioMET architects to design theirhome in historic Midtown. The couple, who met while living in apartmentsin the area, fell in love with the oak-lined streetscape. Design discussionsamong the homeowners and architects resulted in the eye-catching varietyof colors and textures on the front exterior, including Hardie panels—inboth white and purple—and corrugated metal.

MODERN SENSIBILITY

Gavin and Laura developed a mutual passion for modern archi-tecture over the years. Gavin, who grew up in Australia, became fascinated with modern design from an early age.Together, Gavin and Laura frequently attended home tours, such as the AIA Houston Home Tour. They studied the spacesthat appealed to them and noted architects’ work that spoke totheir sensibilities.

After they had procured the parcel of land they had pon-dered for years, they began their search for an architecture firmto design their first house.

“We looked at the AIA award winners from the past 10years, looked at their style and interviewed several firms,” saysGavin.

“We wanted to be sure we liked the architects’ personality, because we knew we would be spending a lot of time withthem,” says Laura.

The couple selected Studio MET Architects, an award-win-ning design/build firm. “We tell clients it’s about the personalconnection,” says Shawn Gottschalk, AIA. “It’s a very personalprocess to design a home for someone. That’s very exciting tous. It’s very different from a commercial job that doesn’t havethat personal connection.”

The firm oversaw both the design and the build-out. “Wewant to see our profession get back to the idea of the ‘MasterBuilder,’” says Gottschalk.

Studio Met Architects met with Gavin and Laura about 12times over three months to discuss and develop the design. Likemany home design projects, the conversation started with ascrapbook of desired elements that were must haves. Laura andGavin sought a modern home with a pleasing simplicity andbuilt with durable, low-maintenance materials.

“We wanted a house that was filled with light,” says Laura. “And we wanted a nice interaction with the garden space as

well as a strong presence from the street,” says Gavin.“Australia is a very young country, without a lot of architec-

tural history, so Modern architecture has been widely embracedthere for many, many years,” says Gavin. “The design of ourhouse was not intended to shock or make big statement, butModern architecture is still a bit unusual here, especially in thesouthern United States.”

URBAN SCENE

“The context is unique with almost all of the surrounding propertiesbeing multi-story apartment complexes,” says Stephen Andrews. Those properties proved to be a driving force behind the entire design, specifically the layout, form and window placement.

“It is important to have mixed density within the urban contextand a single family residence adds to the overall composition of theurban fabric — it creates vitality and visual interest,” says ShawnGottschalk. “It was very important for the home to respond to thestreetscape and the pedestrian. We wanted to create a home that con-tributed to the overall idea of the community.”

StudioMET steered the design and build-out of the home, with the poolalways a part of the overall vision. After their home was completed, Lauraand Gavin employed Downunda Aquatic Environments to design and con-struct the pool to complement the look of the house.

This was essential given that Laura andGavin are active participants in that streetscene and not just for doggie outings. “Weare big walkers. We love to walk to theshops and restaurants in this area.”

When asked about the purple accent onthe front exterior, Gavin laughs, saying “thepurple is about faith in my wife and faithin my builder.”

As the idea to include a colorful contraston the front of the home developed, Laurapushed for purple. “Gavin had suggestedred, but I thought it was too manly,” saysLaura. “I explained that our home shouldlook like a couple’s house.”

To achieve the deeply-hued purple, thefirm encouraged the Joneses to use paintedHardie panels, set off with metal trim.

“We are always experimenting and devel-oping unique details that utilize everyday,cost-effective materials in a creative way,”says Gottschalk. “In doing this we are ableto transform the material into somethingthat is fresh and new. For this project weutilized a fiber cement board and a customgalvanized reveal to create different compo-sitions and texture.”

Another reason the front of the homedraws the eye is the unusual lot is not quitea rectangular. The property features onelong side that kicks out at an angle, makingthe front of the lot wider than the back, sothe sight lines provide the effect of a per-spective drawing. This allowed for the deckon top of garage, which connects to theguest suite, to be especially generous, stretching wide to address the oak-linedstreet below.

“Stephen did a great job on the deck, integrating with the trees,” says Gavin ofAndrews’ design.

“It feels like a tree house up there,” saysGottschalk.

The effect also imparts a welcomingopenness to the front entry.

The galley kitchen allows guests to perch at thebar and observe their hosts in action. The glass-tiled backsplash and Silestone countertops helphighlight the functional beauty of the space.Appliances include a Sharp sliding drawermicrowave, two wood-paneled Thermador dish-washers and a 36-inch Professional SeriesThermador range. Light fixtures were sourcedfrom Lighting Unlimited.

AABBOOVVEE:: The deck, finished with Ipe wood from Brazil, was placed atop the garage and offers a bird’s eye view of the street below.

RRIIGGHHTT:: The pleasing pool view can be enjoyed from the entire first floor and much of the second. In the living area, the pair of white leather custom sofas

from Cantoni feature stitching that matches the wall color, Sherwin Williams Gray Flannel. The glass-and-steel LC10 coffee table is Le Corbusier’s 1928

design. The painting is a by a Brazillian artist.

PRODUCTIVE PARTNERSHIP

“We collaborate very closely with our clients as well as within theoffice,” says Andrews. “We are unique in that we are a small boutiquefirm, but we have three licensed architects that work closely togetheron each project. Most small firms have one or maybe two architects, and even large firms might only have one architect assigned to eachproject as the project manager with other support staff aroundhim/her.”

“We spend a lot of time on the schematic design listening to ourclients, establishing what their priorities are, and what they value,”says Gottschalk. “Our work is not about a specific style. We stronglybelieve in an architecture of authenticity. Simply said, we approacheach project with a unique perspective that is directed by the pro-gram, budget, and site. Our work is about our clients and it reflectswho they are and how they want to live.”

Gavin reports that the initial design plan was very close to the fin-ished project and very little changed during the construction phase. He also pleased that Studio MET ran the build-out.

“There was a comfort level knowing that same people were respon-sible for building our house,” says Gavin. “We feel very blessed to beable to go through this process – every day we are thankful. And wefelt comfortable here as soon as we moved in, because we were veryfamiliar with the spaces after both design and construction phases.”

The success of the daylighting is a delight for Laura. “I love that nolamps need to be on during day. Laura, who did the landscaping fortheir home also relishes their personal green space. “It’s our first backyard,” she smiles.

“Residential design is a very intimate process,” says Gottschalk. “Itis very important to find the right firm to collaborate with. At theend of the day, this is what contributes to the overall success of a proj-ect. There has to be a good dynamic among everyone. For us, ourwork is not just about another business transaction. We are very pas-sionate about what we do and take the time to get to know ourclients and the way they live their lives, or the way they want to livetheir lives. To be honest, we typically become very good friends withour clients and this often leads to repeat projects with them.”

THE CHANGE IN TEMPS INVIGORATES GARDENERS AND MANY PLANT VARIETIES

Fall Gardening Fall Gardening This month’s cooler weather beckons green thumbs(and green thumb wannabes) back to the garden. With the summer heat’sretreat, we find ourselves lingering alongside our beds and containerspondering ways to spruce them up for the milder temperatures. Gardenexperts and nursery staff are quick to point out that fall is the time toplant many varieties of plants—from grass to trees to shrubs to perenni-als—so they can become well-established before summer weather rollsaround.

GRASS ROOTS EFFORT

Fall is the time to replace dead St. Augustine with new sod—otherwiseyou can expect weeds to move into those holes in your lawn. Plantingnew sod in October gives the grass a full six months to build a strongroot system before summer returns. New sod has very little to no roots,so it is very important to lay new sod directly onto exposed soil.

Be sure to strip away dead grass and weeds. A sod cutter, whethermanual or gas-powered, is a handy tool for removing dead grass andweeds, because it leaves a level surface of exposed soil. After laying thenew sod, watering is crucial. New sod must be watered daily for 30 daysto ensure the roots will develop.

projectThe fall is also a key time to

fertilize your lawn, also known aswinterizing. Applying an organic, slow release fertilizer helps grassprepare for its dormant phaseduring the winter months andwill fortify it for its spring start-up.

COLOR BOOST

Your garden may be lacking colorafter summer’s end. Plant long-lasting cool-weather annuals, suchas pansies, dianthus, snapdragonsand alyssum for a floral flourishhere and there. Foliage can bringcolor, too. Ornamental kale andcabbage, dusty miller, can addshades of purple, white, and silvergreen to beds and containers.

projectCOOL SEASON HERBS

If you’re not ready to commit to plantingvegetable crops, herbs are an easier edibleplants effort for those who have less timeand less experience. It’s important to notethat there are cool season and warm sea-son herbs. Popular cool season herbs forour area include dill, fennel, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, nasturtium and thyme. To many gardeners’ dismay, cilantro diesout it late spring and will not survive inthe summer. Rosemary, however, is aresilient, low-water-use herb that thrivesyear-round in our climate. Simply pur-chase four-inch pots of herbs from a localnursery and replant in quality soil eitherin raised beds or containers. Water fre-quently and snip often to add flavor todishes and drinks and maintain a healthygrowth habit.

LEFT: Rosemary and dill are fragrant, flavorful,easy-to-grow herbs for our area.

projectPLANT YOUR VEGGIES

While temperatures may dip below 32 degrees overthe winter months, vegetable gardens produce year-round in our climate. Although having frost clothon hand to protect plants from a sustained hardfreeze is key. Many of the best tasting and mostnutritious vegetables are cool season crops. Somerelatively easy (and therefore popular) vegetables togrow in the Houston area include carrots, collards, lettuce, onions, pumpkin, radish and turnips.

CITRUS SEASON

There are a number of cold hardy Satsumas,Mandarins, oranges, kumquats, lemons and grape-fruit that can be grown in Houston. Depending onvarieties planted, you can harvest citrus fromOctober through February. Check out UrbanHarvest’s January fruit tree sale offers a wide varietyof citrus suitable for growing in Houston.

projectMULCH IS A MUST

You may have mulched last spring or summer, butthat protective layer has long since withered away. Afresh layer of mulch safeguards roots and helpsretain moisture while discouraging weeds. Apply a3-inch layer of mulch — use pine straw, barkmulch, compost or leaves — to beds, large pots andtrees.

SCOOTER. I am a bundle of high-

energy fun! If you're looking for a

wagging personal trainer, then I'm the

girl for you! While I can keep you

smiling on runs and hikes, I will warm

your heart at home, too, because I am

a bit of a lap dog. I've lived with other

dogs before and enjoy their company.

I would prefer a nice back yard or
