With summer just aroundthe corner, our ColorIssue shows you how to

crank up your color palette fromspringtime pastels to full-tilt colorfor summer. Each year, Patone, theworld’s leading authority on color, announces their prediction for the“it” color of the year. Last December,Pantone named Tangerine Tango its2012 Color of the Year. Described byPantone as “sophisticated, dramaticand seductive, Tangerine Tango mar-ries the vivaciousness and adrenalinrush of red with the friendliness andwarmth of yellow, to form a high-vis-ibility, magnetic hue that emanatesheat and energy.”

Since the announcement this cap-tivating reddish orange color hasdrenched not only the fashion pages, but also saturated a slew of homegoods as well. Pick up a recent maga-zine or catalog and you’ll find every-thing from spatulas to cocktail traysto light fixtures and bed linens inthis spirited color.

Beyond citrus fruits and Latindancing, life and nature bring end-less color inspiration into our homes.Children’s artwork, floral arrange-ments, produces at the farmers mar-ket, birds, butterflies and moreinspire decorating ideas inside andout.

Turn taxes into a good thing by using your refund totackle at least one project this year. According tothe IRS, the average American family receives a taxrefund of $3,000. Those bucks can take a lot of thebite out of home improvement projects you’ve beenputting off.

Anthony Rodio, CEO of the contractor referral websiteRedbeacon.com, shares his expert observations of what’s doable andwhat’s worth it when it comes to projects for homeowners.

1. Replace your windowsRodio’s top recommendation is replacing windows—even if it’s just afew of them. “Get rid of your drafty windows and stop losing cooledair,” says Rodio. “An average-sized window replacement runs about$300 per window—so this project will take up most, if not all, ofyour tax return. The good news is that you’ll see the ROI not only inthe ‘saleability’ of your home, but also in monthly energy savings.”

2. Paint“Spring’s mild temperatures are great for exterior paint projects, andthe weather makes indoor painting easier to ventilate through openwindows,” says Rodio. “The size of your home will dictate howexpensive this project is, but budget between $1,500 and $3,000 forfull painting and priming.”

3. Landscape“Now that spring’s here and summer is on the horizon, it’s time topay attention to your lawn and yard,” he says. “You can easily

spend some or all of your tax return on things like planting flowers, nursing your lawn back to health or hiring a landscaper to give yourfront yard a makeover. The biggest reward on maintaining your out-door property is that you’ll want to spend more time outside.”

4. Get a tankless water heater“A tankless water heater can cut your water-heating energy by nearlyhalf, and that means a lot since 30 percent of your energy bill is forheating water,” says Rodio. “Tankless water heaters will cost more, but they’re more energy efficient and can save you money in the longrun.”

5. Replace outdated flooring“Most people walk into your home and immediately look down, sofloors make a huge impression,” says Rodio. “My wife says ‘you livein your home every day, so make it easy for you.’ When you replacethe floors in your foyer or kitchen you can enjoy your home a lotmore. That makes a big difference in how your home looks and feels.Hard surfaces, such as tile and wood provide durable beauty.”

6. Update the bathroom “At my house, with my kids, most of the house is like a team sportszone, but the bathroom is your private sanctuary,” says Rodio. “Anew shower head or vanity can dramatically improve your enjoymentof this space. When you do your own demolition you can save a lotof money on bathroom projects, which add durable value to yourhome and you get to enjoy it every day.”

7. Replace your siding “Siding often covers as little as one third of your home’s exterior,” hesays. “When you replace siding on just the front façade it makes itfeel like a new house. The cost to purchase your own vinyl siding isabout $1 per square foot, so if you’re pretty handy and have sometime this project can be very affordable.”

8. Replace front door “A front door upgrade makes a big impression, especially glassdoors,” says Rodio. “This is a long-term investment that, given thelatest materials, yields lasting beauty, energy efficiency and security.”

9. Add a deck“Much like landscaping, adding a deck brings you outdoors more soyou can relieve stress and get your vitamin D,” he says. “It also addsoutdoor living space—that dramatically increases the appeal and sat-isfaction factor for the homeowner.”

10. Repair your gutters and roofing “Protect your home from water damage by repairing roof leaks andcorrecting drainage of your gutters and downspouts,” says Rodio. “Besure to look at the wash-out points of downspouts. The water shouldflow away from your foundation; if it doesn’t that’s an easy fix that isgood preventive care for your home.” Adding rain barrels at down-spouts save your foundation as well and provide free water duringdry spells.

Replacing your front door, repainting your home or upgrading your landscape provide dramatic improvements at a reasonable cost.

Step by step, a couple erased that ’70s look from their entry hall with grand results

BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

Welcome Change

Your entry hall is what visitors see

when they first enter your home and it

is worthy of your attention. Melissa

Taylor and her husband know this

truth and did something about it. They

first heard about me from their Realtor,

who had given them a copy of

Houston House & Home. After we

discovered that there was wood under

the carpeted stairs and that she could

paint the railing, Melissa got right to

work.

“The flocked wallpaper was original

from 1970,” Melissa explained. “It

had a very formal feeling that did not

suit our style. Since the wallpaper was

neutral and it would be difficult

AFTER: The owners painted the stair riserscreamy white to match their wall trim andrepainted the stair rail for an oil-rubbedbronze look. Because of the two-storyheight, the wallpaper was removed andwalls painted by a professional crew. Aninherited grandfather clock fits nicely by thefront door niche, replacing the glass wallcabinet.

BEFORE: The lovely woodwork was practi-cally invisible, and the flocked wallpaperreally monopolized the view.

to remove without professional help, we

worked around it for several years. The

white wrought iron railing and carpeted

stair were a very dated look that I just

hated,” she said. She wanted a beautiful

wooden stair railing and banister, but she

was shocked at the high cost. Melissa

quickly warmed to the idea of buying a

small jar of paint for under $20 to give the

railing a whole new look.

The couple had the carpet on the stair-

case removed, and shortly after they had

the wooden treads refinished. The first

thing Melissa painted was the metal railing

with a jar of Modern Masters Collection

Metallic Paint in “English Brown.” She

then painted the stair risers to match her

home’s trim, Sherwin Williams “Off

White” semi-gloss latex enamel (be sure

and tell the person behind the counter the

color is in the old fan deck.)

TIP: You can paint anything if you use

the right paint and primer.

The couple did their entry hall in

stages. Later, the walls were stripped of the

wallpaper by professionals, who then tex-

tured, primed and painted the walls with

a Sherwin-Williams flat latex wall paint,

computer-matched to Benjamin Moore’s

“Saybrook Sage” (HC -114) paint.

AFTER: A landscape print replaced the family photo on the den wall and new paint on the walls and railing add simpleelegance to the space. Even the chandelier seems more current and less formal now.BEFORE: The painted white railing, wallpaper, carpeted stairs and dated flocked wallpaper were spoiling this dramatictwo-story entry hall, giving it a very formal, retro vibe.

before && after“I loved your written homework assignments,” Melissa explained. “As

an avid do-it-yourselfer, the homework takes awhile and having your

written guidance complete with sketches is great to refer back to when

your memory dims,” she said.

TIP: You can do projects in stages. In this case, first the stairs and rail-

ings were completed, then the wallpaper was removed and the walls

were painted.

The couple did not have a budget for their project because it was

done in stages. “Having the treads refinished was much more expensive

that I thought and much messier than I wanted it to be. The great sur-

prise was there were great wood treads and finished risers under the car-

pet and no carpentry was required,” Melissa explained.

She said that having professional help with the plan and color choices

was invaluable. “I think your color recommendations were much more

subtle and longer lasting than what Alex and I would have selected on

our own,” she said.

“I think doing the foyer in stages taught me that changing even one

small thing—like the color of the wrought iron, can change the feel of

the entire room. You helped me come up with ways to “calm down” the

busy pattern of the wallpaper by choosing complimentary paint colors

for the adjacent rooms and the rail color.” She was able to paint those on

her own even when she did not have the budget to hire the two-story

foyer work.

“Our friends and family were quite shocked at how different the entry

hall feels and looks. I am always thankful that you see each room as an

extension of the whole house and thus force me to see colors for

how they look from one or two nearby rooms,” Melissa smiled.

TRADE SECRETS• PAINT—it consistently gives the most bang for thebuck. If you use the correct primer, you can paint justabout anything.

• THINK GREEN—painting your existing stair railingsand risers keeps them out of the landfill and savesmoney, too.

• SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGYis not to gut your room but to first rethink the piecesthat are already paid for.

AFTER: Paint can go on anything if you use the correct primers. The couple wasdelighted there was attractive wood instead of basic sub-flooring on their stairs, which saved them thousands of dollars. Refinishing wood floors costs pennies onthe dollar compared to installing new flooring.

GALVESTON ARTIST FILLS HER HOME AND PAINTINGSWITH INSPIRING COLOR

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH GANDY

A JOYFUL PALETTE

“No way!” thought Loretta Trevino the first time she saw the tattered

house on Galveston Island that would become her home and studio.

“When we first drove up to the house it looked horrible,” remembers

Trevino, a hairdresser by day and artist by night. “There was no paint,

just scrapings on the outside. But we were with a realtor so we went

inside anyway and then something came over me—I loved it. I had to

have the house.”

That gut feeling must have been correct because more than twenty

years later Trevino and her husband Miguel have made the 1892 mid-

island home their own, thanks in large part to Loretta’s design sense and

Miguel’s construction know-how. “I come up with the ideas and put

him to work,” says Trevino with a smile. Through the decades the cou-

ple has renovated the kitchen, enclosed an upper porch and added a

back balcony, refurbished the exterior including the aforementioned

paint, and, most recently, added an art studio to the back of the house.

For Trevino, the studio off her kitchen, constructed entirely by

Miguel, was a dream come true. “I pictured a studio on the back of my

house. I had a vision for it,” says Trevino. “I needed a bigger space for

bigger canvases and I needed lots of light. I pictured it right next to the

kitchen so I could be painting and maybe I could have a pot of soup

cooking and go back and forth. It was kind of a fantasy for me. I get in

my studio now and I’m so happy.”

Trevino’s work can be found in a number of galleries and shops on

the island, though the work of the prolific artist also spills onto nearly

every wall of her home, bringing an array of color to each room. She is

perhaps best known for her favorite subjects, horses and houses.

“Most of the houses I paint are local,” says Trevino. “Sometimes I’ll

see an old house that needs paint and take a picture. And I decide ‘I’ll

paint it myself ’. I’ll paint it the color I think it should be — I fix it up. I

can use the structure of a house, and then the colors will come to me

during the process. That day, I might be feeling a purple house with a

yellow sky. The sky doesn’t necessarily have to be blue. I love taking

bright colors and putting them against each other.”

The flair for color that Trevino displays in her paintings can be

seen throughout her home as well. “I need color in every room,” says

Trevino. “At least a splash—it might be bold, it might be subtle, it

might be bright, but I love to put bright colors together.

I love oranges and reds right now, so I’ve added small pieces to my

house that I can see when I walk in a room. I can walk in the door of

a room and get a ‘zing’ of that color.”

Though her colorful paintings have a strong local following,

Trevino only started practicing her art seriously in the last five years.

“I always wanted to be an artist, but I didn’t have the opportunity in

the beginning,” says Trevino, “So I did hair as my art.” Then, one day

in 2007, Trevino decided it was time to feed her life-long interest in

painting. “Life is going by…and some days something comes over

me. I’ll wake up one day and know this is the day to do something

new.”

The free-spirited style that emanates from Trevino’s paintings can

also be seen throughout the home’s eclectic interiors. “For me furnish-

ings are the same as art—I know it when I see it. I’m not necessarily

into antiques or very modern pieces, but I know when I see some-

thing how I want to put it together. Styling to me is as much fun as

painting.”

“I think I live an artistic life—whether it’s dressing or the house or

hair or painting. All day it’s all about art.”

The two-story home was built in 1892 and is believed to be a cottage that was raised up at some point to add the first floor underneath. Lorretta’s gift for artful arrangement is evidentthroughout the home, including this space at the top of the stairs.

Loretta’s Tips for incorporatingcolor into your homeLET PAINT BE YOUR ALLY. “Paint color swatches make meso happy, and color is easy to change if you don’t like it. Somany people are afraid to change a wall color, but it’s so sim-ple.”

FIND INSPIRATION. “I love looking through home décormagazines,” says Loretta. “I suggest people find somethingthey like and use it as a blueprint to explore. There are norules.”

IF YOU’RE NERVOUS, TAKE BABY STEPS. “If there’s acolor you love, start by trying it in small spots—a pillow, avase—something that will bring the color into the room with-out having to make a big change.”

DON’T BE A SLAVE TO MATCHING. “When I see a color Ilove it makes my heart race—it has a direct effect on myemotions,” says Loretta. “If I like that color and I like thiscolor, I put them next to each other. Don’t be afraid to putcolors together.”

The unmistakable wow-factorof color can’t be beat when it comesto invigorating interiors. Spices, flow-ers, the ocean, the sky, lush greenery, fruity drinks—all of these attract ourattention because of their appealingcolors. Your home is just that, yourhome. It should represent what inspiresand excites you.

We talked to design blogger and book authorJanet Lee about decorating with color, and specifi-cally how to take those first steps. Lee’s book,Living in a Nutshell: Posh and Portable DecoratingIdeas for Small Spaces was published this spring byHarperCollins. Her remarkable book is filled withclever and colorful ideas to a burst of sunshine tovirtually any space.

1. In your book, you encourage readersto express their creativity in their smallliving spaces. How did you take that firstbold leap?

Growing up in a family with six kids, I alwayshad to share a room with one sister or the otherand self-expression was not encouraged. Fightingover borders did not allow for my inner decora-tor to blossom until graduate school in Boston. In Boston I shared a two-bedroom apartmentand it was the first time in my life I actually hada room of my own. I stretched my student budg-et and bought a Laura Ashley fitted sheet, cut itin half and made two balloon shades for my win-dows. They were totally functioning withattached ribbons and it was an idea I updatedand included in my book so many years later.I’ve sewn my own clothes since I was eight andnow I found myself making duvet covers out ofsheets with pillows to match.

Right after graduate school, I got a job pro-ducing a local TV talk show and bookeddecoupage artist, John Derian, as a guest. I washooked. Paper became my medium of choice. Idecoupaged plates and transformed old dresserswith vintage wallpaper.

2. Many of your projects involve brightcolors and vivid patterns. How can home-owners determine how much color orpattern will work in their rooms?

Take baby steps with fabric and accessoriesthat involve a small color commitment. Build acolor wardrobe for your room like you do youroutfits—one accessory at a time. A bright pinkpillow mixed with a chartreuse yellow cashmerethrow might inspire you to take the next step.Cover the entire seat of a sofa with a tucked-inpiece of designer fabric. T-pins can help keep thefabric from shifting, strategically pinned under-neath the cushion. I do this with my JonathanAdler orange geometric throw over my linen sofa(see book cover image, page 41).

Then think about adding a bold, patternedwallpaper to line the backs of bookcases. Keepthe look flexible and use removable mountingsquares to hold the paper in place. Anotheroption is to hang the wallpaper on a feature wall, like you would a large art print, and cover theedges with decorative polyurethane molding tocreate a jumbo-sized frame. The molding can

be held in place with removable picture hanging strips. This way if you don’t like the way it looks, just take itdown and try something else.

The next level of color commitment is with paint. That scares people but bad paint can always be correct-ed. There’s not one designer or decorator who has notmade a paint color mistake so give it a whirl. You canrescue a flea market chair and paint it an outrageouscolor in a high-gloss finish and use it as a statementpiece in your room. Instead of painting an entire wall abold color, mix in an exciting hue by stenciling it in apattern on a white wall. That way it won’t seem sointense. A Kelly Wearstler-inspired lattice stencil recent-ly caught my eye on etsy.com. I am dying to use it. Mygo-to is always stripes. That way you can introduce asaturated color without being bombarded by it.

In my friend’s bright white foyer, I taped off a chairrail border about 40 inches up from the bottom andpainted it a rich Kelly green. Right on top of thekitchen doorway, I repeated the color in a two-foot sec-tion, which stands-in for molding over the door. It’sjust enough color to make a ho-hum hallway pop.

3. What’s your advice for selecting colors for aroom? Is there a formula for combining various col-ors in one space?

What guides me around a color palette, from room toroom, is determining what mood I want to evoke in the space.Do I want to feel cozy, romantic, serene, or social? Do I needit to be all business? Cozy colors I’ve used are a deep gray(yes, gray can feel warm in the right tone), lavender, and avintagey avocado green that makes me feel the comfort ofhome. In my home “office,” which is a corner of my livingroom, I painted the closets chartreuse yellow. It gives theroom energy when I need to brainstorm ideas and meet dead-lines.

4. Do you have advice for painting with bright col-ors and rich hues?

I spend a lot of time sitting at my local paint storeresearching color options. I watch people rush in and committo a full gallon of a bold color without buying a sample first. Iwould never put paint brush to wall without using a paintsample board and studying how light changes the hue duringthe day and night. For rich and bright colors, you need to usea tinted primer as a base coat first or your colors won’t be assaturated as they need to be. I’ve gotten great tips from mypaint store experts who are always happy to help.

5. How can homeowners tell if a drab space can betransformed with lighting? What are some strategiesthat work?

I always thought because I lived in small, postage-sized spacesthat one main light source would do the trick. But every spaceneeds a three-pronged (pardon the pun) approach: First, bouncemain light sources off walls and ceilings to softly fill the spacewith ambient light. Second, task lighting like reading lampshelp to define work, play and rest zones and add depth and def-inition to a space. Then, there is the last layer I call the “glow”factor—mirrors, glass, crystal, and candlelight that radiate andreflect a little shimmer and glamour into a space.

Sometimes living in a rental or an older home, the outlets arein the wrong place and you might not want to commit to a fullelectrical installation of overhead lighting. My mini-chandeliersand pendant lamps are all retrofitted with a plug-in lamp cordso that way I can hang the lights anywhere and take them withme to my next space. I embrace the look of lamp cords on thewall. In some cases, I’ve used red, yellow or turquoise lampcords and featured them in loops down a wall.

Keep every light source on dimmers so you can create a differentmood at a moment’s notice.

My last tip is to change out the light bulbs to soft pink ones inyour bedroom reading lamps. It’s a flattering glow on the complexionand so easy on the eyes when you’re trying to unwind.

6. Can you share some of your tricks for decorating with mirrors?

Bigger is better. Get glass mirrors cut to fit the back of bookcaseshelves or lean a collection of flea market mirrors on a shelf for thesame effect. One of my favorite projects is to use industrial convexparking mirrors on a wall. They’re great in kids’ rooms but I’ve useda collection of small security mirrors in my friend’s decidedly femi-nine living room and the more masculine mix of these mirrors cre-ates an exciting contrast.

I also love using chalk ink pens on mirrors, the same kind used inbistros and cafes. Writing out a dream meal you had in Paris or Italyon a kitchen mirror adds personality and heart to a space. I’ve writ-ten a list of humorous daily affirmations on a tall standing mirror inmy bedroom and it makes me smile every time.

If you’re really in a DIY mood, try using a spray that turns anypiece of glass into a reflective mirror. The effect is more like a smokyantique mirror finish but I’ve used it to transform a boring café tableand a glass frame with great success.

Get RealGet RealFrom flooring and cabinetry to molding and furni-ture, hardwoods have been treasured for genera-tions, and for good reason. They offer warmth, durability,

luxury, and design options that are unmatched by other products.

Recently, however, the green product marketing frenzy has created

some misinformation and confusion in the marketplace. Hardwood

forests naturally regenerate themselves and do not need to be replanted

like softwood forests. For this reason, their harvesting methods differ.

The preferred method of harvesting hardwoods is single-tree selection,

where a professional forester evaluates a forest and determines which

trees are ready to harvest. This responsible forest management practice

not only provides a sustaining supply of hardwood, but it also ensures

the overall health of a thriving forest—including water quality, wildlife

habitat, biodiversity, and recreational opportunities—and has allowed

the volume of our hardwood forests to more than double since the

1950s.

Wood also is a carbon neutral material.

Healthy forests absorb carbon dioxide from the

atmosphere, and release oxygen. The carbon is

then stored in the wood for the life of the tree

and the products made from it.

Advanced technology also ensures minimal

wood is wasted during the manufacturing

process. Every part of the tree is used. For exam-

ple, tree bark becomes mulch, sawdust becomes

animal bedding or fuel for boilers to operate dry

kilns, and trimmings become paper.

ANTIQUE TECHNIQUE

A European company, DuChateau Floors, has

recently introduces its Heritage collection. This

line of genuine hardwood flooring replicates the

patina of reclaimed distressed building materials.

Using FSC-Certified European White Oak,

DuChateau transforms the wood into planks of

remarkable beauty with artfully distressed surface

scrapes, nail holes, notches and saw kerf marks

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Care and maintenance of hardwood flooring is

easy—often just a matter of common sense. Follow

these simple guidelines and your floors will last a

lifetime, providing the warmth and feel only real

hardwood can offer.

• Water is a hardwood floor's worst enemy. Clean

up spills immediately. Do not use a damp mop or

oil-based soap. Always check with the flooring

manufacturer for recommended cleaning products.Bellawood natural beech flooring keeps large, open spaces light and bright.

pet of the month

MOMMA MIA!No words. Just listen. First things first, deary:My name is Momma and I’m “tri-pawed.”That’s right, at just two years of age, I sufferedan injury to one of my gorgeous beagle-mixgams. That resulted in (GASP!) an amputation.Squeal amongst yourselves but don’t cry for me,Argentina! Like most leading ladies, I’ve had toovercome quite a bit but have risen from theashes like a Phoenix and I’m back, baby. I’mBACK!

In case you haven’t noticed, I possess a slightflare for the dramatic. But it’s not bad drama. It’s joyful. I may not be able to win a dog race(what young lady wants to be called a “dog”anyway?) but I can keep up with any of the up-and-coming starlets on my tail. Just watch merun. Speaking of, did you notice my action-ori-ented head shot? Nice work, right? It was on theset of a Western I just wrapped with Gidget, the“¡Yo Quiero Taco Bell” actor. She couldn’t keepup. Poor thing.

Now I’m auditioning to be your leading ladyat the HSPCA. I’ve done worse venues. I’d reallylove to perform my repertoire for you in ahomier space. Won’t you give me the role? There’s an added bonus: your friends can referto me as “Yo Momma!” Take that, Gidget!
