editor’s note

H O U S T O N

Ah, October, that month when the mornings whisper “fall”while the afternoons are still

talking summer. With the milderweather sneaking in, it’s no surprisethat the October calendar is jam-packed with festivals and events. We’ve joined forces with several eventsacross our area to help celebrate thisexciting time of year. You’ll find us at the Houston Solar Tour, the 68thAnnual Bulb & Plant Mart, the BayouCity Art Festival Downtown, 15thAnnual Eastwood Historic Home Tour, and at two events down in Galveston, the island’s Downtown Lofts Tour and East End Historical DistrictAnnual Fall Garden Tour.

We encourage you to get out andenjoy the fruits of our community. Byattending some of these events you justmight learn a few things. Perhaps you’llbe inspired to embrace solar technolo-gy, historic preservation or rekindleyour love affair with your garden.

You’ll find plenty of inspiration inour feature story on the home ofAllison and Bryan Bishop by writerHolly Beretto. This couple is among arecent wave of young residents takingtheir turn at helping to preserve thehistoric Eastwood neighborhood. TheBishops’ 1915 Craftsman bungalow isamong the many architectural gems inEastwood, a charming neighborhood, that, like the Woodland Heights wasdeveloped by William Wilson in theearly part of the 20th century.

Also in this issue, Debi Bryant’spiece on dressing up your sidewalks

and driveways offers some stunningideas for those standard surfaces we often take for granted. And JoettaMoulden reveals yet another excitingmakeover, showing how creative think-ing can convert a kitchen from draband dated to functional and fabulous.

Our Destinations section returnsthis month with two nearby getawaysto consider. Mary Chavoustie offersup countless reasons to hit the roadand relish two of our state’s top mostauthentic places to visit – the venerableGalveston Island and that Hill Countryfavorite, Fredericksburg.

From technology to travel, preservation to beautification, this issue is full of great ideas to help youmake the most of the first month offall. As I have mentioned before, sendus your feedback and be sure to tellour advertisers and editorial sources that you saw it in Houston House & Home.

Kitchen SyncKaren Keith and I met at a City Art Worksfundraiser at the Junior League ofHouston. She and husband Eric calledbecause they wanted to remodel their“small, dark and dated” kitchen.

BY JOETTA MOULDEN

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

“At first, we thought we just wanted a budget remodeland wanted your great ideas,” Karen explained. “The fur-ther we got into the process, we decided to do a completegut and remodel, so the scope of the project changed drasti-cally,” she said. Even so, they were able to use many of theideas we discussed during that first meeting.

tip>Keep an open mind. Sometimes what you thinkyou want is not what you end up with.

Karen said it was comforting to have an experienced proto talk to who wasn’t trying to sell them anything, but justoffer advice. They particularly liked the written plan of

ideas, paint colors and suggested subcontractors they received during themeeting because they could focus on getting tasks done and making wisechoices—instead of making costly mistakes.

“Hiring a professional makes so much sense,” Eric explained. “Itreally helps during those difficult times when making a decision canseem overwhelming,” he said. “We were so lucky to have met you and, later in the project, to have had the help of Kelly Gale Amen, KGADesign Services, as well as other qualified people, to guide us throughour remodeling hell,” he added with a smile.

tip>The stakes are high because a mistake can either cost a lotof money, spoil the overall outcome of a kitchen remodeling

project, or both.

Clearly the biggest changes were in the layout, cabinets and surfaces. When I first saw the kitchen, the couple had already expanded thekitchen by adding on several feet by moving the sliding glass door walltoward the fence (under roof) and closing in a window located in thewall to the left of the large patio door.

tip>The most successful kitchens offer contrast between theflooring, cabinets, countertop, backsplash and wall color

and while staying consistent with hardware and appliance colors.

The couple wanted neutral paint colors (we chose Benjamin Moore’sIvory Tusk as the wall color) which ended up working with the BrazilianDelicatus Gold granite they eventually chose for the countertops and theBrookhaven natural finish maple cabinets installed by River OaksRemodeling. Nasser Queiroga installed the granite, from Omni SurfacesCorporation. The 18” x 18” Tuscany Country Dark travertine flooringcame from Stone Quarry Inc. The Vetro Cromo metallic tile backsplash(and the flooring) were installed by Westside Flooring.

One of the problems I first noticed was how high the existingmicrowave was located, which did not meet code and was dangerous as aclear scalding hazard. I suggested they move it into a cabinet on the newleft wall and drew a quick sketch with storage next to it. (They laterdecided to move their stainless refrigerator into the cabinet to the rightof the microwave.)

tip>To prevent scalding, install a microwave so the bottom is nohigher than 54” from the floor.

If you have the time and are knowledgeable, you can act as your owngeneral contractor like Eric did, which will save you about 25%. Butwith the savings comes responsibilities, like meeting and getting bidsfrom subcontractors and scheduling the order of the trades that will per-form the work. This means calling contractors early in the morning or atnight after work to coordinate their arrival.

When I was in Miami for my daughter’s wedding, the couple calledon Amen to calm them and help them through some incredibly stressfuland indecisive moments. “It is always nice to have more than one set ofeyes on any project,” Eric said, “and having Kelly was wonderful.” Theresult? A great looking kitchen!

tip>If you entertainoften, create

plenty of room for you andguests to move effortlesslyfrom the refrigerator tostove to sink.

“Our friends and familylove the kitchen,” Karennoted. “All of our dinnerparties seem to start in thekitchen. When severalfriends come over to cook, the layout works wellbecause we have so manyareas for food prep. It trulyis the heart of the home—the place to be,” Eric said.

TRADE SECRETS

• Create spacious areas for food prepara-tion, allowing at least 36 to 42 inchesbetween workstations.

• Hiring a professional saves very costlymistakes (which effect resale later) andinsures a successful outcome of yourkitchen remodeling project.

• Sometimes the most effective strategy isnot to add square footage onto your house, but to first rethink the space under yourroof that is already paid for.

before

BEFORE: Old existing cabinets, countertops and wall ovens, atoo-high microwave, dark flooring and odd desk (behind the dish-washer) spoiled this kitchen’s potential.

AFTER: New upper maple Brookhaven cabinets are set back tothe right of the sink, creating a feeling of space in the hallway tothe dining room. A new Blanco Precision under mount sink fromWestheimer Plumbing & Hardware and Hansgrohe faucet andcontemporary pulls came from Ferguson Enterprises. A newJennAir stainless oven was installed under the counter on the wayto dining room.

PUNCH UP SIDEWALKS AND DRIVEWAYS TO IMPROVE THE LOOK OF YOUR PROPERTYBy DEB I BRYANT

On the Surface

MATERIAL MATTERS

Your choice of surface material is one way to add panache. “The hottestthing in sidewalks and driveways are pavers,” says Joe Rodriguez, owner ofBackyards Plus Lawn Care and Landscaping. Pavers are concrete blocksmade into interesting shapes and colors that create a sophisticated look.

Rodriguez points out that the cost for pavers has steadily decreased dur-ing the past five years. He estimates that you can have them installed forabout $10-$20 per square foot, which compares to plain concrete that runsabout $4.50-$7 per square foot or decorative concrete that comes in atabout $8-$12 per square foot.

Pavers have an additional advantage over the long term, according toRodriguez. Tree roots or ground shifting cause concrete to buckle and crack.“Pavers make it easy to maintain because, in these situations, all you have todo is pull up the pavers in the affected area and reset them,” he says.

As another material choice, Rodriguez likes flagstone, which workswell in walkways and patios. “They come in a variety of natural colors, shapes and sizes,” he says. “Their cost runs about $15-$22 per squarefoot.”

At Innovative Surfaces of Texas, partner Robert Barajas suggestsdressing up your driveways and sidewalks with decorative concrete.Suitable for new or old concrete, the overlay he uses is made ofPortland cement mixed with a powder epoxy and bonding agent thateasily takes textures and patterns. “It’s a way to make concrete beauti-ful,” he says.

His four-step process takes about four days to complete, dependingon weather. Barajas highly recommends that the sealant, the last stepin the initial installation, be re-applied every three years or so.Otherwise, the color tends to fade.

Patterned concrete can dramatically enhance a large driveway. Photo by Advanced Concrete Designs.

handbook

As humans we habituate, that is we become accustomed to things after prolonged expo-sure. We become indifferent to our surroundings, even places we love, such as our homes. This trait is particularly true for the inanimate objects in our landscape, such as sidewalksand driveways. We get used to the purpose they serve, overlooking the opportunity theyprovide to use them as design elements in the home’s exterior.

Sidewalks and driveways areoften a blank canvas—but thatmeans you can really get creative!Ricardo Escobar, president ofEscobar Company, recently cus-tomized a client’s hardscape bypressing leaves, taken from treeson the property, into the con-crete while it was still wet. Afterthe patterns were firmly imprint-ed, he removed the leaves andfinished the concrete by stainingit to highlight the design.

He also has used a special saltin the finishing layer. Initially theconcrete looks like pea gravel, but the salt eventually pops, achieving a Swiss cheese effect.“It changes the man-made con-crete to a softer, more natural look,” he says.

Escobar has also applied his ingenuity to help clients whoown older homes. The sidewalks for newer homes tend to be4-feet wide whereas with older homes they run about 3-feetwide. By adding a border on either side of the sidewalk, usingmedia such as pavers or flagstone, he updates the width and thelook.

ADD-ONS ADD STYLE

Another way to break the habit of plain concrete is to layer onadditional design elements. Rodriguez likes water features onexpansive hardscape areas, especially in front yards where thewater movement really catches the eye. Moving water also addsan auditory element to your overall landscape scheme.

If your budget allows for a real knock-out punch, considerEscobar’s water feature with a bridge. For one backyard project,he created a small stream—whose water is pushed along andcirculated by a small motor—to run beside a pathway. Thewater crosses beneath a bridge that is lit from below.

Light It UpAdorning sidewalks and driveways with landscape lighting can turn your yardinto a 24/7 pleasure. At night, the lights accentuate the lines created byyour hardscapes, plus they make an attractive safety feature.

“You can get intricate with the designs, which cost more, but it doesn’t haveto be expensive,” says Ricardo Escobar with Escobar Company. His sugges-tions: • For a less expensive idea, install accent lights made of solar panels alonga walkway that leads to the front door, around the back patio, or to line thepath to a pond or prayer garden. • A more expensive project is when he replaces a series of pavers with lightboxes, which are the same size as the pavers. The light boxes can bearranged in a variety of patterns, such as staggered or in straight lines.

Easy Does ItDon’t neglect simpler solutions for sidewalks

and driveways. For instance, power washing your

hardscapes adds vibrancy to the landscape

design. “A high pressure washer does wonders,”

says Vincent Montalbano, salesman with

Montalbano Lumber. He recommends Jomax, a

bleach activator and non-sudsy soap, made to

clean concrete, brick and patio pavers. Speaking

from experience, Montalbano advises the DIY

crowd to star t away from expansion joints until

you get the hang of it since the pressure washer

can damage the mor tar and joints.

THE F INE ART OF F INDING ART FOR YOUR HOME

Paintings, prints and sculptural pieces can givenew dimension to a room, but how do you knowwhat will look good and what you’ll want to lookat for years to come?

It’s simple. Buy art that you love — you arebuying for you, not anyone else. “If I like it, I buyit,” says Richard Fluhr, Bayou City Art Festivalboard member. “You can’t be afraid to buy some-thing. Trust that you love it and go for it. Even ifit’s bright purple.”

Fluhr is a former instructor at the ArtInstitute of Houston. He says he collects work bylocal artists, including artists who are his formerteachers from his days as an art student atUniversity of Houston.

GALLERY SHOWS & FESTIVALS

Local art events offer a great way to discover thetypes of art that you are drawn to. Houston isblessed with more than 60 art galleries that featuremany established and up-and-coming artists.

This month’s Bayou City Art FestivalDowntown is an excellent place to get started buying art. You can peruse the work of the hundreds of diverse artists on hand and often talk to the actual artists about their work and their techniques.

“The price point at the festival is similar to amajor chain store, but at the festival you’ll findoriginal work and can have a conversation withthe artist,” says Kim Stoilis, Executive Director,Bayou City Art Festival. “All artists are required tobe on site for the event. It’s a great education. Newbuyers may not know that they can commissionnew work from the artists.”

If you like the idea of supporting local artists, another great event to experience is the MFAHGlassell School of Art’s Annual art sale held each May.

Speaking of museums, take advantage ofHouston’s many museums. Stroll through the galleries to survey what speaks to you. Museumssuch as The Menil Collection, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and Houston Center forContemporary Craft are always free, while manyothers offer free admission at certain hours during the week.

This modern painting, “Untitled,” 2004, by Ping Lau, offers a nice contrast to antique dining roomfurnishings, while Pam Knox’s, “Images,” 2004, adds interest to a narrow hallway.

“Falfurrias,” 2000, by Otis Huband, provides a colorful welcome in this foyer.

• Buy what you love. You are buying for you, not anyone else.

• Choose art with a story. Art found on vacation, art that represents a vacation or experiencebecomes entwined with special memories. The same goes for works by artists you know or havesome personal connection to.

• Collect art with a theme. Some collectors prefer color theme such as red or black and white, while others go for specific imagery, such as birds or flowers or bridges.

Where ART thou? After a redecorating or remodeling proj-

ect, we are often faced with daunting

blank walls. After just a week or so of

admiring that new wall color, we start

to crave some visual interest.

The Bishops’ charming Craftsman was built in 1915 from a home kit ordered form Sears. The inviting porch spans the full width of the house and provides an ideal spot to sit a spell.

A Young Family Adds PersonalTouches to an Eastwood Craftsman

“This little house is and has been what no otherhouse can ever be to us.”Anne’s House of Dreams, L.M. Montgomery

East of downtown, across the railroad tracks, past the massive Maximus CoffeeFactory lie the narrow streets of Eastwood. Here, behind wrought-iron gates and highwood fences are tidy homes with wide porches and open shutters, each a cozy enclavetucked away from Houston’s hustle and bustle.

One of those homes is a charming Craftsman bungalow belonging to Allison andBryan Bishop. The beguiling little house is a dark taupe, almost sage, with happy redborders around the windows, and a bright white rocker on the porch. This is a homethat says, “Come in. Stay awhile.”

“Sometimes, a house just finds you,” says Bryan of their search for a home. The couple had been renting a home in the Woodland Heights, and knew they were

priced out of that area. Bryan had spent a great deal of time in the Eastwood area dur-ing his radio career in the early- to mid-1990s, as friends he worked with at KRBE-FMowned a home there. One night, Allison was on the computer, looking at listings onHAR.com, and she fell instantly in love with the little Eastwood bungalow.

“It was like, 10 o’clock at night,” Bryan says. “And we drove over here and I was like, wait. I used to party here.”

It turned out the house was owned by Bryan’s friends Bill and Sonny (who livednearby) and bought this house with the intent to flip it. But by the time Bryan andAllison looked at the house and expressed interest, it was under contract.

“I cried for weeks over that,” says Allison.Fate was on their side, however. The previous contract fell through, and Allison and

Bryan moved into the cozy cottage last November.Built in 1915, the home is a kit house, originally from Sears. The style is called

Sunbeam. Back around the turn of the century, Sears, Roebuck sold houses along withclothing and other goods through its famed catalogue. The original owner was an archi-tect and built the house from the kit. One of the few kit houses in Houston, Allisonbelieves it’s the only Sunbeam model.

“I guess you could say we live in a manufactured home!” she laughs. If that conjures up images of sterile, cookie-cutter layouts and an utter lack of charm,

you best think again. The Bishop’s home is charming, cozy and overflowing with char-

acter. The formal living room has a huge fire-place flanked by built-in bookshelves, crammed with everything from literaryanthologies to rock star biographies, the pro-fessional lives of their owners reflected inthem.

Allison loves antique books, and herfather-in-law trolls garage sales and usedbookshops to bring her titles to add to hercollection. Some of them are proudly dis-played on the right side of the fireplace. Onthe wall across from the entry is a distressedmirror.

“We found that at Rosenkavalier,” saysBryan. “She was going to get rid of it, but wethought it would look great in the house. Wepicked it up for something like $25.”

The walls of the living and dining roomare painted yellow, inspired by the couple’slove of Nantucket. They’ve visited a fewtimes over the years and both were struck byhow airy and bright the homes were. Tothem, yellow seemed the perfect color toevoke their Nantucket memories, and mirrorthe island’s sunny charm.

Around the rim of the dining room, justbelow the ceiling, is a wooden plate rail.Allison and Bryan filled it with plates fromtheir travels. An intricate blue pattern is fromEngland. Two flowered plates were Allison’sgrandmother’s. The plain white one with thestraw-looking pattern is from their belovedNantucket.

Sitting at the front corner of the house, the dining room boasts its original, panedwindows. When the couple bought thehome, all the windows had blinds. Onenight, sitting in the living room, sharing abottle of wine, they decided to take down allthe blinds. The result is a home that burstswith light, adding to its charms.

“It was the best decision we ever made,”says Bryan.

The original home ended at the back wallof the serviceable kitchen, but previous own-ers knocked out the wall and tacked on anaddition in the 1950s. The result is a wideden that stretches along the entire width ofthe home. Allison and Bryan furnished itwith deep and comfy Ektorp couches and

armchairs from IKEA, and Bryan’s father built custom bookshelves alongthe side wall, designed to hold Bryan’s CD and vinyl collection. The cof-fee table dates back to Allison’s college apartment, but she bought somecloth from High Fashion Home in a funky geometrical pattern andupholstered the table top, creating a brown, blue and orange splash ofcolor amid the modern Ektorp white.

At the top of the narrow wood staircase, the master bath boasts thehome’s original claw food tub. Adding to the early-1900s persona of thehome, the couple bought an old dresser that was converted into a vanity. In a nod to these more modern times, the sink is a wide, deep white bowlwith a modern, angled faucet. Completing the old-meets-new look to theroom is a round table in the corner. Bryan bought it from Nadeau forAllison as a present “so she’d have somewhere to sit and do her make up.”

Next to the bathroom is Lucy’s room, painted green and furnishedwith the cradle where Bryan slept as a baby and a rocking chair that someof Allison’s students at Episcopal presented to her. When they gave it toher, it was somewhat shabby, but Allison stripped refinished it. Morebuilt-in bookshelves courtesy of Bryan’s dad hold photos and children’sbooks.

“I splurged on Lucy’s bedding, though,” admits Lucy. “It’s fromDoodles. I wanted her to have something new, since we knew we wereblending old and new in the room.”

Connecting Lucy’s room and the master bedroom is the original sleep-ing porch. Where it once served as a summer sleeping space for thehome’s residents in Houston’s hot summers of yesteryear, today Allisonand Bryan use it as a spot to sit and watch the world go by. It overlooksRusk Street and the Bishops furnished it with a couple of chairs and a

table, making it the perfect spot to sip wine and laze away an evening.“We wanted the master bedroom to feel like every great high-end luxu-

ry hotel we could think of,” says Bryan. So, they furnished it with deep mahogany woods, a massive king-size

bed and a globe in a stand. A door opens into a dormer closet, wherethey’ve put in a metal rack for storage and a desk.

At just 2,000 square feet, the little cottage on Rusk might seem toosmall and snug, but thanks to the capable decorating by the Bishops, andthe sound structure already in place, the home feels open and airy, anddeceptively large. Its overall feeling is one where guests are welcomed in,and strangers become friends.

“We love this neighborhood,” says Allison. “We know who our neigh-bors are, and the neighborhood will host wine nights and events so we getto know people. And it’s an eclectic group, lots of craftsmen, artsy types, and many second- and third-generation Eastwood residents.”

The Bishops agree that this house is home, and Eastwood is where theywant Lucy to grow up.

“This is our home for awhile,” says Bryan.Allison smiles at him. “We’re not going anywhere.”

ABOVE: This room was added to the house in the 1950s. Bryan’s father built the cus-tom shelves that now hold Bryan’s CD and vinyl collection. Allison upholstered the coffeetable, a relic from her college apartment. On the wall, images of David Byrne, John LeeHooker and the Talking Heads, are reminders of Bryan’s days working in radio.

OPPOSITE: The windows are original to the house, letting in great bursts of naturallight and making the whole house feel much larger. The crisp white moldings help highlightthe Craftsman architecture.

Today, theneighborhood is experiencing a renaissance, due to an influxof new residents drawn by the near-downtown location whoare interested in preserving the area’s historic charm.

Fredericksburg is a must-stop for history buffs.Experience the life of 19th-century German settlers as you

Whether you’re holidayshopping or gallery hopping,Fredericksburg’s Historic MainStreet is the place to be.Downtown’s Marktplatz, com-plete with playground, pro-vides a welcome break for chil-dren and adults.

Peaches—warm, ripe, fra-grant—can any fruit be better?

Make the quick drive down 45 to revisit thisrenewed and resilient costal retreat

Forget just talking about Galveston—pack up the family and go! A visit to Galveston Island islong overdue.

Trendy decor, specialty wine and great restaurants are all part of the new HistoricDowntown District. While you’re there, give a nod to the majestic 1877 Tall Ship Elissadocked at the Texas Seaport Museum.

There’s no need to rush back home. Settle into the island lifestyle with an overnight stay.Choose from luxury hotels, family-priced motels, vacation rentals and historic B&Bs—you’ll find appealing accommodations for every budget.

Take in an evening performance at The Grand 1894 Opera House, “The Official OperaHouse of Texas,” or plan a sunrise walk along any of the island’s 32 miles of beach.

Galveston has become an arts and entertainment paradise with Saturday ArtWalks hap-pening every six weeks along Historic Postoffice Street. Fall’s ARToberFest, Oct. 16-17, ishailed as Galveston’s premier art event.

Look for the one-of-a-kind tree sculptures that exemplify Galveston’s inspiring resilience.Area sculpture artists transformed trees, uprooted by Hurricane Ike, into unique pieces of art.Take in the self-guided Tree Sculpture Tour that winds throughout the historic city.

The Galveston Island Convention & Visitor Bureau can help you discover even more greatgetaway ideas. Call 866.505.4456 or access www.galvestoncvb.com to plan your next trip.

WELL, HI. My name is Paula, yes, Paula

the Poodle. I’ve been pretty busy the last few

months raising my five kids, who were all

born at that unfortunate puppy mill where

we lived with 161 other dogs. Lordy, are we

glad we’ve moved on from there! Now that

my babies are all out on their own starting their new lives, it’s time for

this 4-year-old momma to think about a new life, too. I have a

microchip and I am officially retired from puppy-making now, so I’m

ready. I’m good with kids and other dogs, you see, I know a lot about

being sweet and nurturing and showing love, but living at that ol’

puppy mill didn’t give me a chance to become a sophisticated lady. I

dream of being like that Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. I think

with a few lessons on things like how to walk like a proper lady and

what a girl should and shouldn’t do inside the house, that I would

make a fine society gal who’d be welcome at any garden party or

swanky soiree in town. The HSPCA folks have taken care of me since

June, so I hope you’re ready to help me become a real lady right away.

Kindly request my ID# A10703317, and we’ll be on our way!
