Musical….. What a success! Such a high demand for tickets we have never seen before. I apologise to any parent who was unable to obtain a ticket and we will alter the way we allocate these next year to ensure this does not happen again. The children did an extra show on Friday afternoon where they did exceedingly well in the oppressive heat. It wasn’t until the finale that you appreciated just how many pupils took part – they only just managed to fit in the space! A huge thank you to all who took part.
Horringer Court Newsletter
Dear all, Many congratulations to everyone for an excellent year. In particular I would like to mention the outstanding behaviour and attitude during SATs and test week. All pupils tried their best in these tests and no-one can ask for any more than this. Below is a small snapshot of events, activities and successes from this term.
I would like to say a special thank you to all Year 8. You have been an excellent year group and I have truly enjoyed working with you all. I wish each one of you every success in the future.
I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable summer break and look forward to seeing you back at school on Thursday 4th September.
Many thanks Tania Johnson

Horringer Court in the Community. This has now become an established day on our curriculum and each year the children work tirelessly giving to others in many different ways. They always undertake these days with enthusiasm and willingness. They are a credit to the school and embrace the philosophy of giving without receiving. I am very proud of them all in the way they conduct themselves. The activities they took part in were: ???? Two of which are highlighted.
West Stow: The pupils either cleaned away
natural vegetation from signs or did a major litter pick over the area of the country park. Their efforts received lots of positive comments from the general public.
Book Fair.
The Scholastic book fair was at Horringer Court during the last week of June. Thank you to all who bought books, stationary and book bags. £304 was raised from which we received commission of £60 which will be spent on books for the library. Thank you for your support in this event. Mrs Cooper.
Cooking and Baking. Key Stage 3 pupils prepared, cooked and served lunch for guests from Horringer Church. Such items as quiche and lemon drizzle cake were all cooked from scratch. The guests were full of praise for the culinary expertise and the politeness of the pupils.
Key Stage 2 pupils worked in pairs to produce an array of cakes ranging from the classic victoria sponge, to chocolate gateaux, brownies, gingerbread, coconut cake, lemon drizzle and cupcakes. But this baking session was different to the DDT lessons the pupils are used to as this time the cakes would not be returning home for families to indulge themselves with. The pupils created postcards and information leaflets about the cakes that they had baked, then carefully wrapped the goodies and went into our community to give away free cakes. The children had practised beforehand their spiel and they knocked on doors waiting for an answer. The pupils were an asset to the school, showing their knowledge, politeness and care for the community. Local residents seemed at first utterly bewildered that we were giving away the cakes but once realisation hit it was nothing but smiles all round.

Alder Carr Farm – Year 5 Visit
Despite the weather being on the chilly side,
Year 5 spent a fabulous day of scientific
study at Alder Carr Farm. They were
welcomed by owners, Joan and Nick, who
then treated the pupils to a tractor trailer tour
of the farm and a fruit picking experience.
Other activities included a meadow survey,
bug hunt, tree identification study.
Mrs Kemp.
Many thanks to all who contributed to our Phil the Bag collection. Please continue to save all your old clothes for our next collection. We will let you have the date as soon as we have arranged it.
Father’s Day Breakfast.
The school was woken by the scrumptious
smell of bacon and sausages cooking on
Monday 23rd June as many Year 5s joined
their dads for a belated Father’s Day
celebration breakfast.
Transfer Events
On Wednesday 9th July our drama hall was
once again packed with expectant parents
and children for our New Intake Evening.
Both were welcomed to the school with a
presentation by Mrs Johnson and then
introduced to their new tutors and
classrooms. This was followed by an exciting
transfer day on Friday 11th July. Pupils meet
with their Year 8 buddies who took them on a
tour of the school. They were then treated to
a free school dinner and had taster lessons in
English, Maths, French and Design
Technology. We looked forward to
welcoming all our new families when pupils
return to school on Thursday 4th September
2014.
Mrs Kemp.

Progress Group visit Darley stud.
On Friday 9th May, the Progress Group were invited by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, to visit Darley Stud in Dalham, Newmarket. We were wowed by the grounds which were manicured to perfection and it was an incredibly insightful day, learning all about how true winners on the race track are bred. We learned that the horses were VERY well looked after and we were lucky to meet some very famous stallions. Our guide was Carolynne, who had been working at the stud for ten years and she explained that not only were the horses well cared for, so were the staff, with some being given free homes on site and all staff being fed for free every day in the onsite canteen. We were lucky to be able to sample the food and head chef gave us all a treat of pizza, chips and chocolate cake - a resounding yum!
The trip also fitted in with our current reading book; Dick King Smith's E.S.P (Eric Stanley Pigeon, or Extra Sensory perception). The story is all about a very clever pigeon that could pick out winning horses in the newspaper. In the book it talked about Newmarket and we managed to fit in some maths, where the children learned about odds and how they could increase their money by odds of 100 -1. Although the book was fun, it did also delve into the issues of gambling and how being greedy can lead to very big losses and unhappiness. We all had a fabulous time and thank our Year Eight Buddies for accompanying us, as well as Head Boy Jorge Draycott. Mrs Totman
Year 5 visit Kentwell Hall.
The drama hall was a sight to behold as all us eager year 5s prepared to go to the famous Tudor house, Kentwell Hall. As we arrived there our 21st Century money was exchanged for Tudor coins. Next we were sent through the time tunnel through to 1587. Here we met squires, visiting gentry, maids, scientists and weavers all beautifully dressed as from the Tudor period.
We saw some disgusting things - eyeballs and dead iguanas! We saw some amazing things - intricately carved marzipan sweets, beautiful gardens, baskets made from willow, maids starching clothing, gentry taking their lunch and many more interesting sights.
All in all it was a fantastic interesting and fun trip. Oh yes, we were back in the 21st Century in time for tea!!!
Emily Jones.

Year 8 spent a morning at West Suffolk College looking at career choices and the
courses that are offered there. The options they chose from were: hospitality, drama, construction, beauty, hairdressing and forensic science.
Maths news. Team Competition. Two teams from Horringer Court took part in the Primary Maths Challenge held at South Lee School. There were a total of 12 teams taking part and the event involved 7 rounds where speed and mathematical agility were a priority. The girls team: Charlotte Hudson, Naomi Brighty, Kia Clarke and Millie Cook Wharton, finished a creditable 7th and the boys team; Thomas Brett, Sam Doherty, Alex Murfitt and Noah Boreham finished a very well deserved 3rd. All pupils were a credit to the school in their efforts and exemplary behaviour. Well done to all.
UKMT Maths Challenge. On the 1st of May all pupils in maths set 1 in year 7 and 8 took part in this individual maths challenge. This is a National competition and over 240,000 pupils were entered across the country. Our pupils amassed 1 gold, 6 silver and 14 bronze awards. Eddie Wilkinson was top in the school and got such a high score that he was entered for the next stage. Something that only 0.5% of all the entrants achieve. Well done Eddie.

House end of year report.
Lions’ Report.
This has been an incredibly busy term for pupils and staff. We have had the school production, numerous sporting fixtures, the Summer Fayre and Activities Week. On top of that we have all been out in the community helping others and been caught up in exams. No wonder some pupils look fit to drop.
Lions’ House has been not that brilliant in uniform stakes but we did win the KS3 inter-house athletics which was a very close fought battle. We have also had some star performers in the DDT Dance productions and all Year 5 pupils have played their part in school productions in one way or another.
It is a sad term in many ways as we say goodbye to our Year Eight pupils. The dancers will be particularly missed but we have others we are ‘training up’ to take their place. We also have some keen mathematicians leaving us and some excellent sportsmen and women moving on. We wish all of our Year Eight pupils all the best in their new schools and look forward to hearing great things about them in the future.
We are also losing other pupils and would like to wish them good luck too.
There will be a change of staff in September as we are joined by Mr Allen who will be class tutor for L2 and Mrs R who will be class tutor alongside Mrs Cook in L3. I feel confident Lions will make them feel very welcome. Mr Kent is going to Head of Sharks and the gloves are already drawn as to who will win the House Shield next year. Mrs Malster
.
Shark’s Report.
Sadly there is no report from Mr Kent as he
has injured himself playing rugby and is
currently suffering with a broken leg. I am
sure all will join me in wishing him a speedy
recovery.
Croc’s Report. This has been a great year for Crocs. At the end of the Autumn Term we raised over £1100 for Riverwalk School. Some of our Crocs have brothers and sisters at this school and Drew Meekins gave a very persuasive talk to the House about what the school does for its pupils and just how much their specialist equipment costs. All Crocs worked very hard to raise these funds, but of course they could not have done it without the help of parents and friends of our school. In the Spring Term the Crocs set out very seriously to win the House Cup, so we challenged other House to a Valentine’s Day Cake Bake and a Spring Bonnet Competition. Crocs won both of these. We are a pretty creative House with lots of participation and with ongoing hard work gathering credits we won the Cup! Key Stage 2 Sports Day was a triumph for us with Year 5 being the winners and Year 6 coming second.
Year 8 have been fantastic this year and they will be greatly missed. All the Crocs staff and pupils wish them every success at upper school. Mrs Higgins.
WELCOME TO NEW STAFF.
In September we will be welcoming new staff
to Horringer Court:
Miss Claydon will be joining the Science and
PE department. She has recently qualified
with an outstanding grade.
Mr Allen will be joining us in a new post of
Assistant Head.
Miss Berry will be returning to us to complete
her training and will be working mainly with
Year 5.
Mr Bowes will continue to cover Mrs Murray
until such time as she is able to return to work

Activities Week.
What a packed week! Year 5 thoroughly
enjoyed their visit to Kingswood; Year 8 had a
great time in France and everyone else
worked hard on their visits and producing
excellent displays for visitors to see. There
were many positive compliments about the
pupils’ behaviour. Many thanks to all the staff
who made these visit possible.
Well done to everyone.
