We started our journey at 10am, although we were sad to say goodbye to our par-ents, we were really excited. After a few hours on the coach and a stop at the ser-vice station, we arrived at Maiden Castle. We got to see where a Celtic settlement would have been and how they would have defended themselves. We even got to storm the teachers! After a few hours at Maiden Castle we headed for Hooke Court.

By the time we got there, it was almost dinner time. Everyone was sat on the coach twitching with excitement and wanting to find out who was with us in our rooms. Once that excitement was over, we had dinner and an evening activity. Over the two days that we were at Hooke Court we completed lots of fun activities. These activities included: Roman marching; life of a Roman soldier; making clay pots; weav-ing; cooking a delicious Roman feast and lots more. We learnt so much on the trip and had lots of fun sharing rooms with our friends. I was a little sad when it ended, but looked forward to seeing my family.

OUR SCHOOL VALUE—CELEBRATION

Club hockey success!

Congratulations to Barney and Dan who were part of the Surbiton U10 Boys’ Hockey team who won the Surrey Cup last Sunday, beating Wimbledon 1-0 in a very tense final.

Good luck to them as they progress on to the Regional Finals on May 5th.

Borough Netball Tournament

On Thursday, 14th February, eight Year 6 pupils trav-elled to Kingston Grammar’s Sports’ Ground to compete in the Borough Netball Tournament.

They played matches against Castle Hill where they lost narrowly 3-2, Latchmere where the score was 1-1, and Green Lane, which was goalless. They repre-sented the school brilliantly and all their hard work and extra training paid off.

Quicksticks hockey

Congratulations to our year 5 and 6 pupils who competed in the Borough Quicksticks tournament on Thursday, 28th February. We played matches against Coombe Hill, Green Lane, OLI and Tolworth Juniors. We scored an amazing 13 goals and only conceded 3. We won all our games other than against Tolworth (the eventual winners) which was a very tight 1-0 and could have gone either way.

Before the tournament began, Brendan Creed (pictured with the team above) who is a current Surbiton player and GB international, had a ques-tion and answer session with the children. He has just returned from playing in the Proleague in Aus-tralia and New Zealand.

Then, after they had played, James Gall, who is also a member of Surbiton Men’s 1st team and a current GB international, gave a skills masterclass which the whole team took part in.

Well done on a great team performance and good sportsmanship.

WELL DONE CHRIST CHURCH!

WE HAVE SO MANY TALENTS IN

OUR SCHOOL AND ENJOY CELE-

BRATING EACH AND EVERY ONE

TOGETHER

RECEPTION NEWS AND CHALLENGE

Reception were eager to come back to school to show off how to use all our sounds and tricky words in our writing. We even know what adjectives are and how to use them to make our writing more exciting to read! This week we’ve had a lot of fun designing buildings and then creating them thanks to the PSA do-nating us lots of boxes. Plus the adults seem really pleased with the screens that were inside them too!

We’ve also been continuing our work on pattern. We love creating different patterns and describing them to a friend. Sometimes when we make our own unit of repeat, we ask our friends if they can continue our pattern! We really like using these yoghurt tops to make our patterns. If you use these at home, reception would really appreciate it if you can save them for us to help us with our learning.

Next week reception will be thinking about how they are special and unique. Please provide a photo of when your child was a baby and ask your child to describe themselves and to tell you about what they think they were able to do as a baby. As always, remember to record your child’s response exactly as they say or do and have fun! We look forward to seeing you at our Writing Stay and Play next week.

PANCAKE DAY!

TUESDAY 5th MARCH

Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is the day traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash

Wednesday. Lent (the 40 days leading up to Easter) was traditionally a time when people fasted. On

Shrove Tuesday Anglo Saxon Christians went to confession and were ‘shriven’ meaning they were

absolved of their sins. A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This bell became known as

the ‘Pancake Bell’ and is still rung today.

Shrove Tuesday always falls 46 days before Easter. Lent starts the following day on Ash Wednesday

and finishes on Holy Saturday. Lent was not followed on Sundays to give followers a day a week of

rest; if you exclude the Sundays then Lent lasts for 40 days.

To make 8 or so pancakes you will need 8oz plain flour, 2 large eggs, 1 pint milk, salt.

Mix all together and whisk well. Leave to stand for 30 minutes. Heat a little oil in a frying pan, pour in enough batter to cover the base of the pan and let it cook until the base of the pancake has browned. Then shake the pan to loosen the pancake and flip the pancake over to brown the other side.

DID YOU KNOW?

Pancakes were each marked with a cross before being sprin-

kled with salt and then set aside to ward off evil.

We prefer sweet pancakes to sa-

voury in the UK. Lemon and sugar

is the most popular topping by far.

Maple syrup is second and golden

syrup in third place.

KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE

KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE IS OUR PRIORITY

Are you a

SMART SPARK ?

PARENTS/CARERS: We have more gadgets in our homes today than our parents did. As children become more tech-savvy many are unknowingly putting themselves at risk of serious injury . A laptop or mobile phone left on a bed will become hotter and hotter as the heat generated by the device has nowhere to go. This increasing heat combined with flammable materials has the potential to cause a fire that could put lives at risk. Charging a device with an unbranded charger further increases the risk of a device overheating with potentially deadly results.

DO make sure laptops, phones and other electrical devices are charged on a hard surface such as a table or desk

DO NOT charge devices on a bed, under a pillow. Avoid charging devices overnight

DO get everyone in the habit of turning off electric games, computers, TVs etc before going to bed

DO NOT overload plug sockets

Home and away: Don’t

forget electricity sup-

plies vary worldwide

between 100 volts—

240 volts. This means

it is not always safe to

use UK electrical

equipment abroad.

Electricity travels at

the speed of light—

more than 186,000

miles per second!

A spark of

static electricity

can measure

up to 3,000

volts!
