St. Francis of Assisi ParishJune 03, 2018 • The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Honoring Our Franciscan Tradition

From the Pastor’s DeskToday we celebrate the Feast Of The Body and Blood Of Christ, formerly known as Corpus Christi. This celebration reminds us of the centrality of the Eucharist to our Catholic Faith. The Second Vatican Council described the Eucha-rist as the “Source and the Summit of the Spiritual Life”. The primary date to remember the gift of the Eucharist is the evening of Holy Thursday when we commemorate the Institution of the Eucharist. The Feast of Corpus Christi was proposed in the 12th century to provide a more joyous celebration of the Eucharist outside the commemora-tion of the Passion and Death of the Lord. The traditional celebrations included Eucharistic Processions through the streets of towns and concluded with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. These traditions are being revived in many places; Pope Francis will lead a procession in Rome today and Bishop Sotto will lead one after the 1pm mass in the Cathedral.

The original date for the celebration of Corpus Christi was on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday; this was chosen to unite the celebrations with the institution of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday. In common with other Holidays of Obligation, this Feast has been transferred to the nearest Sunday. The day we celebrate is not important, the Mystery of Faith is what defines the celebration, not the day of celebration. The Eucharist in many ways defines us as Catholic Christians. Our prayer today is that our celebrations will deepen our love and devotion to the Eucharist.

Peace and Every Good in the Tradition of St. Francis and St. Clare.

This event is not sponsored by St. Francis Parish

As you may be aware, June 28 – July 4, 2018 St. Francis Elementary and St. Francis Parish will embark on a joint venture and operate a fireworks stand at the Safeway located at Alhambra and K Street.

We are all very excited and looking forward to raising funds to support the pur-chase of Chromebooks for the school and supporting Parish operations and ministries.

St. Francis Parish and St. Francis Elementary would like to announce our TNT Fireworks Coordinators:

St. Francis Elementary Linda Del Nero – [email protected] 916-214-5490

St. Francis Parish Patrick Mahan – [email protected] 916-224-1282

In the coming weeks, we will ask school parents and parishioners to volunteer for the following:

• Volunteers for 3 hour shifts to see fireworks • Shift captains to oversee these shifts • Selling Script after weekend Masses • Need a numbers person to assist with inventory/pos system

This will be a great opportunity to raise funds for our organizations, have fun, meet new people, and get to know local midtown businesses.

And, since we are the only fireworks stand in MID-TOWN, we encourage you to get the word out and tell all your family and friends to support us by purchasing their fireworks from us!

To get involved, you can sign up online at http://signup.com/go/CdDUCHa or contact Patrick or Linda to join our team.

Summer Course on Franciscan Life with Bro. Mark Schroeder, OFM

Sponsored by the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Pathways to Justice Committee

St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare of Assisi had an incarnational faith that has influenced our world for over 800 years. You can learn more about these saints and the movement they started. You are part of this movement! Come join in a study course that will deepen your own insights and commitment to following the Gospel of Christ—in the spirit of Francis and Clare.

This is a study course. Nothing strenuous, yet there is “homework” reading offered. Our guide, Build With Living Stones, comes from the Franciscan Institute. A supplementary source will be Building a Bridge by Jesuit author James Martin. All reading materials will be provided at each class…. The goal is to move from head (knowledge) to guts (emotional response) and landing in between (matters of the heart).

Bro. Mark, from our local friary, will be your guide. We will start promptly at 7PM and have a guaranteed ending by 8:30PM. Brunsman Hall. All are welcome.

As the course title suggests, each of the six bi-weekly classes will build upon the previous. Yet we don’t want anyone staying away if you cannot attend each class. Come once, twice, or to all six….

A donation would be appreciated, given to Bro. Mark’s ministry, “Franciscans for Justice.” http://stfrancisparish.com/PDF/LivingStones2018.pdf

The Gospel calls us to live outside our comfort zone,

because anyone who follows Jesus, loves the poor and

the lowly.

Weekly ReadingsLord, make me an instrument of your peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

This Weekend!

The parish would like to extend a very special “Thank You” to all Parishioners for their support of our May 20th Iftar Dinner - through their time, talents and treasures. And, to our attendees who assisted with serving - a very special thank you! You were engaging! Friendly! Flexible!

You provided service with a presence!

To all of you, those who joined us for dinner, and to our servers and greeters – our Muslim brothers and sisters found you to be among the most incredibly friendly groups to have hosted an iftar dinner. St. Francis made everyone feel comfortable, and our efforts were very much appreciated.

A special thanks to the St. Francis Pathways for Justice Committee for coordinating this event.

Quotes from attendees: “Many thanks to everyone who made the Iftar dinner possible. It continues to improve each year. Great job everyone. Looking forward to next year’s dinner.” - Roman H.

“It was a fabulous opportunity for outreach and building com-mon understanding. A magical evening of sharing between peoples of God. We should extend an invitation to our Feast of St. Francis/St. Claire events ...just a suggestion” - Corrina M.

“All we can say on behalf of the Pathway for Justice Committee is THANK YOU! for your support of IFTAR 2018. It was truly a Franciscan effort. The care, love, and kindness shown to our Muslim Brothers and Sisters and their children was wonderful and very much appreciated.” - Richard H.

“Thank you St. Francis for this good deed of compassion and interest”-Laura J. via Facebook

It was a wonderful and meaningful evening in the spirit of Francis and Clare… thank you all very much!

From Margaret Scott, “The Eucharist and Social Justice”: ‘The Eucharist is about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eruption of God’s liberating action into the matrix of human history. That is why the Eucharist cannot take place in a quiet, holy sanctuary apart from the world and world events. The context of Christ’s death, as of his incarnation, was that of foreign occupation and oppression, together with the domination and injustice of the country’s Jewish leaders. Their conspiracy, the complicity of Pontius Pilate, and the collusion of the crowd all contributed to the crucifixion.

‘Similarly, the Eucharist is today celebrated against the backdrop of the contemporary culture of violence and death, of suffering, injustice, and all the human tragedies of our time. It is lived against the backdrop of the geopolitical and socioeconomic context of militarism and imperialism that drive before them waves of displaced persons and that fuel unacknowledged genocides. It is lived against the backdrop of increasing protectionism. It is lived against the backdrop of shifting economic might that does nothing to reduce poverty in the world’s poorest countries...

‘The resurrection [of Christ] is God’s reply to the injustice that condemned Christ and led, inexorably, to his death. The Risen Christ announces that death is not the end. He proclaims the invincible power of love and compassion to radically alter the course of human history. He proclaims the victory of life over death and of God’s justice over our injustice, victory over all that oppresses and kills the human body and the human spirit. The Risen Christ puts newness and meaning where we put destruction, and brings life wherever we generate death and every form of death: the violent death of war, the slow martyrdom of the marginal-ized, the relentless genocide of peoples and ethnic groups, the inexorable annihilation that is the result of hunger and destitution, the destructive humiliation of torture, and the systematic violation of nature.

‘For Christ rises sacramentally in every eucharistic celebra-tion and brings his gift of new life. In an act that gathers together the past, present, and future; in an act that brings solidarity with all to all the crucified; and in an act that bestows the power of compassion--Christ offers meaning and hope: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” ‘

We adore you Most Holy Lord Jesus Christ, here and in all your churches in the world, And we bless you, because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. Amen.

Draw us forth to the table of life: Brothers and sisters, each of us called to walk in your light.

We are parts of the body of Christ, needing each other, each of the gifts the Spirit provides.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

AMEN+

In the presence of our God, as we gather here in Christ, feel the Spirit breathe upon us, the breath of life, graced and divine. We have come to break the bread; we have come to share our lives. Let us bring these fruits to the table, the love of God, yours and mine!

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Sacramento

Next weekend we will present a simple, new hymn titled, “These Alone Are Enough” by Dan Schutte. https://bit.ly/2ITaah2

The text is inspired from the Suscipe prayer by St. Ignatius of Loyola, and functions as a living testament that everything we say and do is for the greater glory of God. In times of testing, we’re forced to make life-altering decisions. It is precisely because of the love and grace God reveals to us that we shall overcome.

“Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all I have and call my own.

You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.Everything is yours; do with it what you will.Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me.”

When we gather in our homes, through our prayers and our meals, We are fed and nourished together, our families, broken and blessed. In the household of our Lord, where we come to share the meal,

We are fed the words of our Savior, one family strengthened and healed.

Is not the meal that we bless and share a communion in the life of Christ? One bread, one blessing, one cup make us one body in our Lord. In the presence of our God, by the justice that is shown,

We will build a kingdom together; the love of Christ given to all! Copyright ©2003, Ricky Manalo, CSP. Published by OCP Publications. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #2429

Let all creation! Sing Alleluia!

Cantor first, then repeat:

All creatures of our God, Most High Lift up your voices to the sky! O burning sun with golden beam

and silver moon with softer gleam!

Let all things their Creator bless and worship God in humbleness. O praise Creator, praise the Son,

and praise the Spirit, Three in One! Copyright ©1998, 1999, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #2429
