Looking for friendly, welcoming people to answer questions after Mass and register new parishioners online. If you have one hour for training and 20 minutes after Mass, you could be the welcoming face of St. Francis! Contact Kathleen Owen, [email protected] or 919-847-8205x241.

If you’re feeling burdened by life, please consider getting a Stephen Minister. If you’re dealing with relation-ship issues, illness, life transitions, a Stephen Minister can help. For more information, contact Kathleen Owen, [email protected] or 919-847-8205x241.

Thank you to Rick Miller-Harraway of Catholic Charities who spoke at all of our masses a few weeks back about the importance of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and of our parish’s role in the success of the BAA. We have a high annual BAA goal and the Diocese of

Raleigh relies on the generosity of our Franciscan community in meeting the needs of the diocese. The BAA continues – for those who have already contributed, we say thank you. If you have not yet pledged, we ask that you please consider making a BAA pledge in the coming weeks.Thank you as well to all who have contributed toward a new roof for our church. Our estimate for the roof is around $100k, and we have received more than $80k toward that project. We do have a reserve maintenance fund built into our church budget, and the funds we are raising toward the roof allow us to use those reserve maintenance funds for other projects.

And an update as well on water conservation: as a Franciscan community, the environment is important to us. St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of the environment. Francis had a deep love for the created world – the sun, stars, earth, sky, water, flowers, birds – all mediated to him a sense of God’s loving presence. With our Franciscan charism in mind, over the past few weeks our facilities staff has modified 90% of our water faucets with an insert that conserves water by slowing the flow. Thank you to one of our parishioners who helped with this project.

And finally, this beautiful and honest quote about prayer I recently found, from a Presbyterian clergywoman in Kansas named Loretta Ross-Gotta: “Sometimes I do not know what prayer is beyond the long worn rag of human longing waved toward the heavens like a tattered flag. Today I think prayer has to do with putting down one foot after the other upon this earth, while being honest with ourselves and God about our limitations.” Blessings on your week!

May they rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon them:

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal and Charity

Bishop Luis Rafael is coming to be with our St. Francis family on March 11. Bishop Luis will arrive in time for fellowship during coffee and donuts after 9:30 Mass. He will celebrate 11:30 Mass and will again be with everyone after that Mass for coffee and donuts. Bishop Luis will be available to talk about this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal, and will also be expressing gratitude for the generous support for this year’s BAA from the Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet our bishop and to celebrate our response to this year’s appeal. Central to our human and Christian vocations, as well as to the unique vocation each one of us receives from God, is that we be good stewards of the gifts we possess. God gives us this divine “human workshop”, this world and Church of ours. The Spirit shows us the way! Deepest gratitude for your participation in this year’s BAA. Please contact Deb Royals-Mizerk if you have any questions: [email protected] or 919-847-8205x222

Blues/jazz singer-songwriter, William D. Burton was born in Los Angeles, CA into a military family that took him to France, Germany and all over the US. While he got to experience other cultures in his youth, he became involved in the wrong culture during his early adulthood, eventually spending time in prison. It was a turning point in his life, but instead of turning his back on that whole period of his life, William puts his past, and all his religious and secular training, to good use by serving as the Director of Adult Case Management for Community Success Initiative. The program assists ex-offenders to readjust to life outside of prison with the goal of enhancing life skills, thus reducing the number of individuals who are sent back to prison. The program also provides personal development and leadership skills, youth development, and entrepreneurial training.

Burton’s performances are lively, humorous, and enlightening. The soul of the man shines through with his unique style of music and lyrics.

In the desert of prayerI find myselfNot deserted

For there too Christ does dwell. My fast

Becomes a sweet dessertAs I give as alms my arms

    And handsAnd heart as well,

To fill another’s unkown need,And then the desert of my prayerWith flowers bloom and swells.

Lenten Tenebrae ServiceWednesday, March 28 At 6:30pm, come and pray with us as we prepare to celebrate the holiest days of the Church year, the Triduum; three days marking Jesus’ passion and resurrection. Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows” in Latin is a traditional prayer of the Church that reflects the darkness of Good Friday with the gradual extinguishing of light. 5

The entire season of Lent is a time for turning away from worldly things and turning towards God. The season calls us to take time out for God in an intentional way, to examine our lives and look at where we sin and to ask for forgiveness and open our hearts to God’s mercy. We are also called to accompany one anoth-er in community, praying for one another, and helping the least fortunate among us. For this reason, many people “give up” something for the season as a sacrifice. You may also hear of people “giving in” to something instead, for example, going to daily Mass or waking up earlier each morning to pray, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or becoming a mentor. We do all these things throughout Lent to prepare ourselves to celebrate the great feast of Easter and Jesus’ triumph over the grave.

  • Last month, we celebrated National Migration Week, a time of intentional reflection called for by the US Bishops on the circumstances confronting migrants, including immigrants, refugees, children, and victims and survivors of human traf-ficking. We hosted three events where over 150 parishioners had an opportunity to hear stories of refugees and migrants and gain a deeper understanding of the

pain and promise within the lives of these individuals. Our hearts were touched by this opportunity for dialogue. We now have faces and names to lift up in prayer, new inspiration to continue our work of charity and justice, and new avenues to explore for ministry and advocacy. Because this complex issue of migration remains so important for us, we want to share with you some ways for you to learn more and be engaged in this important work. First of all, there is a group of parish-ioners interested in coming together regularly to look at issues of migration, especially the need for comprehensive immigration reform. With an imminent deadline looming to address the 1.8 mil-lion young people known as Dreamers (illegal immigrants brought to the US as

children), there is an urgency and much work to be done. This group of parishio-ners will focus on continuing to provide opportunities for learning as well as open up ongoing vehicles for advocacy on behalf of our immigrant brothers and sis-ters. If you are interested in attending an upcoming meeting, contact parishioner Ellen Ferrone, [email protected].

Second, over the past year, we have sponsored a refugee family from the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Raleigh office of USCRI, one of four refugee resettlement organizations in the Triangle area. In the coming months, we will be working with USCRI in sponsor-ing another family, as well as promoting other ways to volunteer to support the transition of these families. This is a meaningful and impactful way we can walk alongside migrants who come to our country (legally) looking for a life of freedom and opportunity. If you are inter-ested in this ministry, contact parishioner Aggie Dalton, [email protected].

Lastly, we had the opportunity in January to share some time with Eliseo Jimenez, an undocumented man who since Octo-ber when he received a deportation order has been living in “sanctuary” at one of our neighboring churches Umstead Park UCC off of Glenwood Ave. Eliseo’s story, like so many others in his situation, speaks of the dreams of coming to the US as a young man looking for a better life and refusing to be separated from his family, including his children who are US citizens. Eliseo’s story has been highlighted recently in several national news outlets including PBS News Hour. It’s not clear what Eliseo’s legal future is, but there was nothing ambiguous about his faith in Christ, his sacrificial love of his family, and his hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow. There are opportunities to support Eliseo and his family by being hosts at the church and by purchas-ing his handmade unique folk-art bird sanctuaries. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, contact Trevor Thompson, [email protected]. Let us keep our brothers and sisters in need in prayer this Lent. To adapt a phrase from Martin Luther King Jr., the arc of our Lent journey is long but I pray that it bends toward justice for all.

Recently I was at mass and I noticed an older gentleman. As we were singing The Servant Song, I noticed his legs were tired and a bit shaky, but he stood through all the prayers and hymns and at the end of mass, he seemed grateful he’d had the strength and he was completely spent from the effort.

When you’re a caregiver, you get to know a person in ways you never expected. You know the rhythms of their days and nights, you know their likes and dislikes, and you discover their inner strengths as well as fears. The gentleman’s resolve reminded me of my mother as well as my father. They both had such a strength in their later days that I just never noticed until I was honored to care for them. But so often, the side you see of caregiving is the other side. The refusal to walk with the cane or the walker, the refusal to go to another doctor’s appointment, or to take another pill or use the oxygen tank. You see the stubbornness, the frustration and the fear of not being in control – even if it’s just what they wear that day. The words of The Servant Song ring so true –‘Will you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you’. So often we only want to be on the giving side of care. The power side. The control side. When it’s our time to be cared for, we resist, we refuse, we rebuff. But for those on the caring side, how willing would you be to change places with the person you care for? Would you be willing to have someone be Christ to you? Don’t forget that the person being cared for is also able to be Christ to you – by gracefully allowing you to care for them. 'Pray that I might have the grace To let you be my servant too.’If you’re the caregiver for someone you love, I’d like to ask you to consider attending our Caregiver’s Academy. This six-week course, beginning April 12 at 12:30 in the Cupertino Room of the Assisi Community Center will be presented by the Center for Volunteer Caregiving. Participants will learn how to handle stress, improve self-confidence, communicate better, improve your ability to make tough decisions, locate helpful resources and more. The Caregiver Academy consists of six 90 minute sessions of practical training. The curriculum, Powerful Tools for Caregiv-ers, (www.powerfultoolsforcaregivers.org) is an award winning educational program that provides caregivers with tools and strategies to better cope with their unique challenges.

Education MinistriesPreschool can be one of a child’s most important early learning environments. Kids often are first exposed to formal instruction in a preschool. But what makes for a great preschool?

TeachersFirst, preschool teachers must have proper training and credentials. At St. Francis of Assisi, all our teachers have Bachelor Degrees in Early Childhood Education or their Early Childhood Credentials. We are also committed to keeping up with best practices by striving to earn 10 hours of continued education each year. Our teachers have/will continue their education:

•Friday, February 16 - Participated in a workshop on Friday with Kim Hughes on Behavior Manage-ment strategies in the Classroom.

•Tuesday, February 20 - Participated alongside our colleagues in the diocese for training on children with learning challenges and disabilities.

Education and training isn’t enough, though. The best pre-school teachers will have a number of skills and traits that allow them to get the most out of their students (and give the most to them). Here at St. Francis Preschool, our teach-ers display these and so much more…each and every day!
