Inclement Weather PolicyIf there is a cancellation or delay at TFS due to inclement weather, daily mass will also be canceled. The sched-ule of the parish offices and other programs and events may or may not be affected. Please check the parish website, call the parish office, or check WRAL or WTVD for information concerning all cancellations and delays. As always, please make the safest decision for you and your family before deciding to attend any event.

A few weeks ago I wrote about the financial “asks” that we have here at St. Francis, and the reason why we have these “asks.” One of the things we learned from our parish survey was that we need to do a better job communicating information about our finances here. St. Francis, of course, is a

major operation. We have an annual budget of over $10 million which supports the parish, school, and preschool. In addition to these operations, we also have obligations toward the Diocese of Raleigh and toward Holy Name Province, the Franciscan province to which the friars here belong. We are now in the time of year in which we look to our obligation toward the Diocese of Raleigh – the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Our parish is sometimes referred to as “Franciscan” in the sense that it’s a parish that has been served by Franciscan friars for more than thirty years. But St. Francis is a parish of the Diocese of Raleigh – we friars serve here at the good will of the bishop. We do not live on our own Franciscan island; we are part of the greater whole of this diocese. That is why the Bishop’s Annual Appeal is so important for us. Our talented staff has put together a video for the BAA which describes the way our own parish connects with the Diocese of Raleigh. And next weekend, we welcome Rick Miller-Harraway, regional coordinator for Catholic Charities, who will speak about the importance of the BAA in funding the ongoing operations of Catholic Charities. As always, we ask for your support in reaching our 2018 BAA goal of $509,000. We friars, as always, have made our own pledge as well. An update on the parish survey we conducted in November/December: we have a committee of people who are looking at the survey results, and we are looking for patterns or trends in the results we received back. We will keep you informed as to what we find and whatever next steps we see happening. And on this Super Bowl Sunday – blessings on your week!

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal and Evangelization Consider these reflections regarding a disciple’s response from the United States Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Stewardship: “Stewardship in and for the parish should not be narrow. For the diocese is not merely an administrative structure but instead joins parishes into a “local church” and unites its people in faith, worship, and service. The spirit and practice of stewardship should extend to other local churches and the Universal Church – to the Christian community and to one’s sisters and brothers in Christ everywhere – and be expressed in deeds and mutual support.” Every member of the Church is called to evangelize and practice an aspect of Christian stewardship – sharing time, talent, and treasure. The Bishops Annual Appeal provides a unique opportunity to St. Francis, and the parishes throughout our diocese, to come together to build and support our faith. In the same way that we may be helping to support other parishes, other parishes are helping to support us. Our combined efforts enable a greater capacity and reach for our Christian faith and evangelization across our diocese. Deepest gratitude for your participation in this year’s BAA. Please contact Deb Royals Mizerk if you have any questions: [email protected] or 919-847-8205 x222.

Ash WednesdayFebruary 14Liturgy of the Hours and Ashes Although not a holy day of obligation, Ash Wednesday is one of the most well-attended and important days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. It takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly ob-served by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradi-tion of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head which symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead during liturgy, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Alternatively, the priest may speak the words, "Repent and believe in the Gospel." You do not have to be baptized to observe Ash Wednesday and receive ashes on your fore-head. The day is also one of fasting and abstinence. When fasting, a person eats only one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. We also abstain from eating meat. Fridays in Lent are also days of abstinence.

Lenten Tenebrae ServiceWednesday, March 28 At 6:30pm, come and pray with us as we prepare to celebrate the holiest days of the Church year, the Triduum, three days marking Jesus’ passion and resurrection. Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows” in Latin, is a traditional prayer of the Church that reflects the darkness of Good Friday with the gradual extinguishing of light.

The entire season of Lent is a time for turning away from worldly things and turning towards God. The season calls us to take time out for God in an intentional way, to examine our lives and look at where we sin, and to ask for forgiveness and open our hearts to God’s mercy. We are also called to accompany one another in community, praying for one another and helping the least fortunate among us. For this reason, many people “give up” something for the season as a sacrifice. You may also hear of people “giving in” to something instead, for example, going to daily Mass or waking up earlier each morning to pray, volunteer-ing at a soup kitchen or becoming a mentor. We do all these things throughout Lent to prepare ourselves to celebrate the great feast of Easter and Jesus’ triumph over the grave.

    Outreach Ministries

Feeling Called to Work with the Unemployed? The greater Triangle area is well-known as a place of growth and ample secure employment. For reasons that are complex and numerous, many in our own community, however, are dis-advantaged in securing meaningful and gainful work. Through our Office of Justice and Peace, and in partnership with Catholic Charities and a great organization called Jobs for Life, we provide a ministry of support and mentorship to those men and women in our local Raleigh community looking for new job skills and better employment. This ministry is starting another session of weekly job-skills courses to the unemployed this spring, and we’d love for some of you to join us.

What can you do? Volunteers in this ministry can do some of the following:• Shop and donate needed food items we

use for meals• Cook and share a meal with the students

and their families• Provide childcare for the children which

consists of helping with homework as well as engaging them in some activities and games

    • Mentor one of the students by developing a personal relationship with them as they learn and look for meaningful employment

Thank-you for all who have served in the past. If you are interested in hearing more about the opportunities please come to an information session In Anthony Hall Room 402 on February 15, 10:00 am or 7:00pm. Please contact Ellen Ferrone [email protected] or 858-531-9797 if you have any questions or interested in participating.

Over the last year, we have shared periodic updates about our parish project in a struggling but historic neighborhood called South Park in southeast Raleigh. In partnership with a non-profit community development organiza-tion called Passage Home, we are ministering out of a home in this neighborhood, and we are calling this place the Whitaker Home (named after the family who lived in it for many, many years).Through our work at the Whitaker Home, we enter the many social tensions and injustices that mark our day and are quite visible in our own city: poverty, shame, disem-powerment, deficient housing, lack of meaningful work, racial unrest, gentrification, addiction, broken families, hopelessness, gangs, youth despair, loneliness, materialism, and prostitution.

There is also so much rich history in this neighborhood, good and beautiful people, some hope-filled community projects, an array of gifts and hopes and dreams, and a yearning for meaning and new

life. God is already among these people and in this place. We are blessed to find ourselves there.

We want to invite you and your families down to visit us and see how God is at work in this place.

Next Saturday, February 10, 9:30am to 11:30am, we will be providing an opportunity to come and see. Please join us. This immersion will offer a guided tour of the neighbor-hood and time to think about and pray about poverty in our community through the lens of our Catholic Social Teaching. Participants will also be able to have some conversation with some residents of South Park who will share their stories of struggle and hope with us. Please contact parishioner Marianne Williams if you are interested in participating in this opportunity on February 10, or in future immersions, [email protected], 919-280-8984.

I had the privilege of caring for my mother, my father, my mother-in-law, and my best friend in their later years. I use the word privilege, but it was really so much more. It was humbling, illuminating, thought provoking, inspiring, exhausting, and frustrating. Good caregiving requires patience, endurance, creativity, compassion, and faith – in God, in the person you’re caring for, and in yourself. Caregiving is done best in the context of a team. You, your siblings and/or children, healthcare professionals, neighbors, support groups, and anyone anywhere who can help, or listen or understand. No one can do provide 24/7 caregiving very well for very long by themselves.

It is this team aspect that has lead our Alzheimers/Dementia Caregivers Ministry to put together a speaker series focused on identifying ways to help caregivers. The series called Living Your Best Life – As Time Goes By. It starts on Sunday March 4 at 3:00pm in Founders Room with a talk from Dr. Tracy Poe, who will speak on the Psychological and Spiritual Aspects of Aging. I’ve heard Dr. Poe speak. She is a dynamo of wisdom, stories from her long career in social work and that unvarnished truth that is so often glossed over in the exchange of pleasantries. She will focus on how to be honest yet compassionate, how to meet the care receiver where they are, and how you can choose to be happy, regardless of your situation. Next up is Melanie Bunn, RN, MS, GNP. She will offer information on Caring for Loved Ones with Memory Loss. Melanie has consulted with the Alzheimer’s Associate in North Carolina for more than 20 years. Come hear her on Sunday, March 18 at 3:00pm in Anthony Hall Founders Room.

Finally, on Sunday, April 15 at 3:00 pm in Founders Room, Becky Sansbury, M.Div., will offer a presentation on Hidden in Plain Sight: Resources for Resilience. As much as you plan ahead, crises large and small can disrupt your life. In spite of being thrown off course, you still have to keep going. How can you do that? Resilience! Becky Sansbury gives you a simple way to create a personalized resilience plan. You will identify four key components of stability and three ways you can use them to move forward, regardless of the circumstances. Boost your confidence to confront any crisis... and respond with resilience. So schedule some time for you and join us for these presenta-tions. Taking care of you is the best way to take care of your care receiver. They will notice the difference - you’ll feel the difference! And put the Parish Life Office on your team. We’re better together!

Our Catholic Faith can be modeled all around us on the St. Francis of Assisi campus. The theme of Catholic Schools week this year is helping us highlight that. The collaboration of Julie Sper-razza (Kindergarten Teacher at TFS) and Becky Cawley, (Justice and Peace parish staff), gave rise to a “Come Follow Me” event. The 5th and 8th graders at the Franciscan School accompanied our 3, 4 and 5 year olds from the Preschool through a service project experience benefiting neighbors at Our Lady of the Rosary. TFS leaders taught about our call to serve others.TFS leaders and Preschool learners participated in bagging beans and rice.TFS leaders and Preschool learners cel-ebrated their success by recognizing how great it feels to serve others with prayerEvery gesture and every act of kindness leaves a lasting impression. Through words and deeds, the Gospel can be seen in action as we commit to learning, growing, and accompanying our children to Lead, Learn, Serve, and Succeed.

Hospitality is one of the key elements of our liturgical life at St. Francis: welcoming each other, extending peace to all around us, and sharing communion in its most symbolic fullness, both the host and the chalice. However, during flu sea-son, being hospitable also requires that we be attentive to the health of all. So here are the steps we are taking during this season: • While we will continue to

welcome each other at the beginning of our liturgies, and extend an offer of peace prior to communion, no one should feel pressured to shake hands. A smile, nod, or word is a very appropriate gesture of welcome and peace.

    • In addition, holding hands at the Lord’s Prayer, while a beautiful gesture of communion, is not expected during this time.

    • Receiving the Eucharist from both the host and the chalice is the fullest symbol of com-munion we have as Catholics. However, it is important to remember that the Church teaches that receiving from either the host or the chalice still constitutes receiving the fullness of Christ.

    • All Ministers of the Eucharist will be sanitizing their hands following the sign of peace and prior to distributing communion.

On Saturday, December 2, 2017, six individuals made a permanent profession to live the gospel life in the Secular Fran-ciscan Order, in the Padre Pio Fraternity based in Raleigh, N.C. The ceremony marked the completion of three years of formation for the newly professed: Lee Cunningham, OFS; Ellen Ferrone, OFS, Michael Hancock, Theresa Flynn, OFS S. Lynn Oeser, OFS, and Christopher Peffley, OFS.Their public proclamation was made during a 11:00am Mass at St. Mary of the Angels Chapel. Fr. Steve Kluge, celebrated the liturgy, assisted by Fr. Thanh N. Nguyen, pastor of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Durham. As part of the ceremony, the six pro-fessed that they wish to embrace the gospel way of life following the example and words of St. Francis of Assisi, that are at the heart of the Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order. Profession is a lifetime commitment to follow the Gospel in fraternal relationship with other professed sisters and brothers.Over 140 persons attended the Profes-sion of the six above. Jim Wahl provided the music and Jennifer Fiduccia was the cantor. Marion Monti was the sacristan. The presence of our Regional Counselor, Bob Pearson, OFS was very much ap-preciated. The exquisite spread of food for the reception was provided for and served by the Secular Franciscan Inquirers. This certainly was a most joyous occasion!Peace and All Good,Frank Peluso, OFS.
