WHAT IS 红包?

Literally translated, 红包 (hóngbāo) means "red bag". It is a red envelope filled with brand new money that is given to children after midnight on the first day of the year (based on the Chinese lunar

calendar, it fell on 8th February 2016) by parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents.

ORIGIN OF 红包

Once upon a time, there was a monster called 祟 (Suì). He would sneak into houses on the

evening of the last day of every year and touch the forehead of kids when they were

sound asleep.

After seeing the monster, kids would start crying and then get a fever, and their intelligence would slowly deteriorate. To protect their kids, parents would stay up the whole night sitting by the bed

with the light on.

ORIGIN OF 红包

There was one old couple who liked their child so much that they spent the whole night with him and got 8 copper coins as toys for their kid to play with until he fell asleep, after that, the parents wrapped

the coins with a red cloth and put it under the pillow.

At midnight, the wind suddenly blew the candle out, then the monster came out and tried to touch the forehead of the kid.

However, a sparkle from the coins appeared at that moment and scared the monster away.

WHEN DO PEOPLE GIVE 红包?

In the very beginning, people gave "hóngbāo's" to kids during Spring Festival. Normally, kids

receive a "hóngbāo" from grandparents after kowtowing to them, especially in rural areas.

Apart from the Spring Festival, people also give "hóngbāo's" to the bride and groom at a wedding as a way of expressing their best wishes that they will always

be together and live happily everafter.

WHEN DO PEOPLE GIVE 红包?

There is another kind of not so pleasant situation in which people might need to give "hóngbāos» before having surgery. It was not uncommon for the family of the patient to

give the doctor doing the operation a "hóngbāo".

AT WHAT AGE WILL CHILDREN STOP RECEIVING 红包?

It is normal to receive "hóngbāo's" from relatives who are 1 generation higher on the family tree than you. This will usually stop though once you have graduated from college, started work or gotten married,

and these guidelines on giving varies from family to family.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

HOW MUCH MONEY TO PUT INSIDE OF THE 红包?

For the Spring Festival "hóngbāo", in rural areas, some people will include 10 RMB to 100 RMB in the red envelope depending on how close to the kids they are. In urban areas, kids may get 100 RMB to 1,000

RMB from their relatives.

HOW MUCH MONEY TO PUT INSIDE OF THE 红包?

红包 RECEIVING MANNERS

(1) Always receive it with both hands as a way of showing respect and gratitude. (2) Do not open the envelope the moment you get it, this is a very impolite thing to do.

WECHAT 红包On June 27th 2014, WeChat "hóngbāo" made its debut. From that day on, the number of users

have been increasing drastically - on the eve of Spring Festival alone, it was used 1.01 billion times, marking the coming of a new era! After making its first apperance in 2014, WeChat

"hóngbāo" has changed literally everybody's lifestyle and made everyone's lives that little more easier.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?Will the WeChat "hóngbāo" totally replace the

traditional way of giving "hóngbāo" personally?
