T hey’ve hosted workshops onhow to create terrariums, fairygardens and wreaths; classes to

learn about microgreens, orchids andsucculents. They have plant sales, go onfield trips and are working to give backto the community one garden at a time.

The Friends of the Garden organiza-tion began about a year ago with thecollaboration of Susan Dollard, friendsand other volunteers that had met atCornell Cooperative Extension (CCE)and elsewhere.

“When I left CCE, many other volun-teers were coming to their end there aswell,” said Dollard. “We wanted to con-tinue what we loved doing and so wetried to figure out how we could dothat.”

So they held a meeting and decided toform the group Friends of the Garden tohelp local individuals and organizationsby raising money to put back into thecommunity through garden work.

“We’re still young and still learning but

we’ve raised enough money that we canturn it around and give back whereverwe see the need,” explained Dollard.“There’s a lot of grants out there andthings for non-profits but a lot of folksneed help, and they’re not really in aposition to get a grant like that.”

As of right now there are 26 membersof Friends of the Garden, all volunteers. Many members are past Master Garden-ers but anyone who has an interest ingardening, volunteering and giving backis encouraged to join. All potentialmembers fill out an application and paydues to join.

Members include individuals from allover the county, which allows them tobe aware of the needs of people in othervillages, hamlets and towns.

“I think it’s great when people join andthey understand what we’re doing, whatour focus is. The best part is workingtogether. You have kindred spirits withyou that feel the same way you do, thatlove to garden,” Dollard said smiling,“and helping somebody, it really is agood feeling.”

If you’re thinking vegetable gardens,

that’s not the case here. Friends of theGarden work on beautifying an areawith perennial flowers and plants, mulch, landscape art and much more.

The group has hosted various work-shops and classes in order to raise themoney that enables them to buy mulch, plants and other necessities. After that, the labor is completely volunteer.

The most popular class taught so far?The fairy garden class.

“The first one held at the Pickled Owlin Hurleyville filled up so quickly, weactually had to turn people away,” Dol-lard said. “So we decided to do anotherone and that one filled up just as fast. It’sbeen really great.”

At the fairy garden class, Friends of theGarden provided the participants withHypertufa containers, small houseplants to plant inside them plus three orfour tables of moss, stones and bark.Pretty much anything you might find inthe woods.

“Everyone was so creative,” beamedDollard. “People really blew us awaywith the things that they came up with.”

During their regular meetings, Friends

of the Garden members always try tohave an educational piece to share withthe rest of the group, somethinglearned from a recent trip or gardeningtips acquired from a class.

“That’s the great thing about whatwe’re doing,” said Dollard. “There isalways something new to learn and themore we learn, the more we can sharewith, and help, others.”

At their next meeting, members willbe helping the Sullivan County Federa-tion for the Homeless in Monticello. They’ll be re-vamping the sign area, sprucing it up with mulch and plants.

Dollard also asked each member toplease bring one or two items they candonate to the not-for-profit organiza-tion.

“I got a list of some of the things that

they need and it was interesting,” Dol-lard stated. “I wouldn’t have thought ofsome of the things that were on the listso I’m glad we asked.

“I have made the best friendsthrough this kind of work, that I thinkI’ll have for the rest of my life. I believemost of them feel the same way abouteach other. We all want to give back tothe community, no strings attached, norules or regulations. We like to dothings where the community isinvolved as well, not just the membersof Friends of the Garden. It’s a goodfeeling.”

To find out more about Friends of theGarden or to apply to become a mem-ber until their website is completed, you can contact Susan Dollard at 845-583-5437.

It’s also walking distance from

Junction Pool, where the Willowemoc

Creek and a Beaverkill River join, and

the legend of the two-headed trout was

born.

Built with high ceilings and hardwood

floors throughout, this custom-renovat-

ed home with three bedrooms and two

and a half baths is cozy, inviting and full

of natural sunlight that streams in from

its many windows.

The year-round sun room, full of large

windows on every wall, overlooks the

extended lawn, perennial gardens and

outdoor patio that features a custom

built stone grill.

With a snug and petite breakfast nook,

central fireplace, many built-in bookcas-

es, storage in every place you can imag-

ine (think stairway steps and secret wall

cubbies), a private office on the third

floor with walk-in cedar closets and a

basement so tidy and airy you’d hate to

call it a basement, you are sure to feel

right at home in this country getaway.

And if you enjoy entertaining guests

for the weekends there is a pleasant

three bedroom and two bath guest

house just a stones-throw distance from

the main house.

From the outside, the guesthouse is a

charming, whimsical cottage; something

out of Snow White and the Seven

Dwarves. Once inside, the guesthouse

feels spacious, airy and comfortable

with a fireplace, bookshelves, rooster-

design wallpapered kitchen and a sec-

ond floor that harbors a large master

suite, reading nook and roomy foyer.

“The owners really went about reno-

vating the house and property in such a

unique and beautiful way,” said Realtor

Jean Dermer, “and I really see the

potential that this house has to be a

wonderful Bed & Breakfast, with so

many rooms, the guesthouse and being

so close to all the shops and cafes, it

could definitely be a small retreat for

people visiting the hamlet of Roscoe.”

Many deals are getting multipleoffers that are near, or even above, asking price – depending on thefactors of the home.

It was widely predicted that salesactivity would be robust during thesecond quarter of 2106, and themarket has not disappointed.

Pending sales are up from a yearago, with more than a 21% increase,57 sales in May compared to 47 lastyear at this time.

Great news on prices: there’s been abig jump in the average sales price, up40% from last year – $202,316 com-pared to $143,874 from May 2015.

The median sales price is also up,from $117,500 last year to $119,000

now.Sellers are edging closer

to their asking prices, sell-ing at 91.1% of their ask-ing price. Real estateagents often get askedwhat homes sell for "offthe asking price" – so,another way of looking atthat is the average homeis selling for about 9% off

asking price.Add to this market, fewer homes

for sale now: 1,148 compared to1,238 this time last year – thatmeans our inventory is down, which benefits sellers.

This all signals the beginning of aturnaround from a buyer’s marketto a seller’s market. There are still

terrific buys to be found, and interestrates are holding steady, with noincreases predicted in the nextmonth or so.

The time to list your house and tobuy is NOW! Contact your local Real-tor to sell or buy your home. YourSullivan County Board of Realtorscan assist you in that process. Con-tact your local Realtor today!

For a cleaner way to remove graffiti, rust or paint, consider a new Forestburgh-based business calledDustlessblasting. Bob Sipos, who also runs Mr. Willy’s Restaurant in Monticello with his father, startedDustlessblasting as a way to keep his restaurant equipment clean and functional. And now, he’s look-ing to take on customers who wanted a quick and environmentally safe way to tidy up.Dustlessblasting uses a glass and water base, which makes it environmentally safe, and also lessmessy than traditional sand media. In addition to being cleaner than sand blasting, dustless blastingalso works better than a traditional pressure washer. If you would like to have your pool’s paintstripped or the graffiti and excess paint taken off a building, you can contact Bob Sipos by phone at845-798-0889 or by email at [email protected].

C ommercial farms are oftenblamed for the vast array ofcontaminants that find their

way into water supplies and the soilitself. But home-gardening enthusiastsmay also be contaminating water andsoil through the use of pesticides.

Data from Green-NetWorld, an envi-ronmental advocacy group, indi-cates Americans use approxi-mately 2.2 billion pounds ofpesticides every year. Pes-ticide use is a prolificproblem. More than 100active pesticide ingredi-ents are suspected ofcausing cancer, gene muta-tions and birth defects. Inaddition, a growing list of pesti-cides may disrupt the immune andendocrine systems and have long-termimpacts on infants and young children.Research indicates that many pests tar-geted by pesticides will eventuallydevelop resistance to these pesticides,

rendering the chemicals useless. One way to reduce chemical pollu-

tion at home is to find alternatives topesticides.

• Investigate reduced-risk pesticides. The United States Environmental Pro-tection Agency is examining pesticidesthat pose less risk to humans and the

environment than existing pesti-cides. Homeowners concerned

about pesticides can visitwww.epa.gov to learn moreabout reduced-risk pesti-cides.

• Use biopesticides.Biological products, also

known as biopesticides, can play a role in a more sus-

tainable food chain. These con-trol agents include fungi, bacteria orviruses and can be applied like chemi-cal pesticides but do not leave toxicresidues. Furthermore, they are rela-tively inexpensive to produce.

• Look to the kitchen. Dish soap can

be an effective pest killer. Fill a spraybottle with soapy water and sprayaround the exterior of your house andon plants that have a pest problem. Thesoapy water can kill ants and roaches. Italso can coat the wings of small flyinginsects. Catnip is another natural pesti-cide. Planting catnip in a garden canrepel mosquitoes.

• Use epsom salt. Sprinkling this salt

on the leaves of plants in the gardencan keep away animals, such as deer orgroundhogs, that would otherwisedevour plants. Epsom salt also canrepel beetles, slugs and snails.

Before homeowners turn to chemicalpesticide applications, they can exploremany natural remedies to keepunwanted pests at bay.
