All That Grows Is Not Good

With spring here, foliage is springing back to life. Unfortunately, weeds are thriving as well. Travis Country West is a premiere community, boasting great pride in property upkeep.

If there are weeds in your front yard, please treat them. Your lawn will have more success growing if they don’t have to wage battle with weeds.

Preventing Oak Wilt in the Spring

Tree and Shrub TrimmingWith all the rain, foliage has bloomed

beautifully. Some problem areas have developed, with low-lying tree canopies or large shrubs blocking clear passage to and above sidewalks. Please assess the area in front of your house, from the perspective of standing on the sidewalk. Is there any trimming that needs to be done to clear the sidewalk for safe passage? Especially with kids, we don’t want them to have to step in to the street to walk through the neighborhood.

The danger of oak wilt is very real in our region. To combat its spread, the following pruning procedures can help prevent the spread of oak wilt:

• Take care not to schedule routine maintenance work on oak trees from February through June, when the Nitidulidae beetle is active.

• Sterilize all pruning equipment before performing any work on oak trees. If you contract work, ensure the company follows sterilization procedures with all blades.

• Paint all pruned “wounds” on an oak trees year round.

Cicadas are fairly large insects but can vary in size with some growing over 1 ½ inches. Color may also vary depending upon species, but many are brown or green. All cicadas have bulging eyes and, on adults, wings that are held roof-like over the body. The wings are semi-transparent with thick wing veins. The majority of their life cycle is spent underground.

Cicadas have 2-5 year life cycles and appear in Texas in mid to late summer. Females insert egg clusters into branches of trees using their saw-like ovipositor

(egg laying structure). Eggs hatch after about 6 weeks and small nymphs drop to the ground where they burrow into the soil. Nymphs feed on sap of tree roots with their piercing-sucking mouthparts. After becoming fully developed, nymphs emerge from the ground at night and climb onto nearby objects such as tree trunk, plants, fences, etc. Adult cicadas emerge from the last nymphal stage leaving behind the exuviae (cast skin). Adults can live 5-6 weeks.

Male cicadas are well known for their “song”. They rest on a tree and produce a whining sound to attract females. The sound is produced by two vibrating membranes on the side of the abdomen. Females do not “sing”. Adults feed on juices from tender twigs, but usually do not cause lasting harm to the plant from feeding.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that nearly 90,000 patients die in U.S. hospitals each year due to a preventable disease – many could be avoided if everyone properly washed their hands.

From germs on office equipment to sick colleagues who decided to come into work anyway, people face the same dangers in the workplace. The same simple fact holds true: Washing your hands regularly is an effective way to prevent yourself from catching or spreading a preventable disease or illness.

WHEN TO WASH YOUR HANDSThe CDC recommends washing your hands every time you:• Prepare or eat food• Use the restroom• Tend to someone who is sick; both before and after• Blow your nose, cough, or sneeze• Handle garbage• Treat a cut or wound• Change a diaper or clean up after children• Handle an animal or animal waste

HAND WASHING BASICS The CDC has issued specific guidelines about effective hand washing:

Wash Your HandsReducing Spread of Disease While at Home and Work

• Wet hands with water• Use plain bar or liquid soap• Create a lather by vigorously rubbing hands together for 15-20

seconds—about the amount of time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice

• Be sure to wash palms, back of hands, fingers, and nails (clean nails by gently scratching nails down your opposing soapy palm)

• Rinse off soap under a stream of waterWHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?

• Focus on hand washing in the lunch and/or break room• Be careful when using sponges and dish towels. These are ideal sites

for bacterial growth. Always wash your hands after using these items.• Maintain a clean work area; regularly clean any office equipment,

especially shared items such as phones and keyboards.• Remind your colleagues of the importance of hand washing,

particularly when you witness someone neglecting to wash his or her hands.FOR MORE INFORMATION

To learn more about how washing hands regularly can help prevent disease, ask your health care provider, or visit the CDC’s creative Web site dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of hand washing at www.henrythehand.com.
