FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora School has started for most of our students. At Holy Name, the first day of school for the Preschool was last Monday. It’s so amazing how our preschool has blos-somed in just three years of existence. Thanks to the hard work of our preschool director, Mrs. Alice Seher, and her teachers: Chrys Yee, Elizabeth Ibalio, Chris Lum, Lauren Kung, Kathleen Nolan and Karen Henderson. There are 60 toddlers enrolled and that’s why we had to hire 3 new teachers: Michelle Chun, Marina Wright and Amanda Ricci. On the way to preschool, the doctor had left her stethoscope on the car seat, and her little girl picked it up and began playing with it. “Be still, my heart,” thought my friend,” my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps!” Then the child spoke to the instrument: "Welcome to McDonald's. May I take your order?" The first day of school for our K to 8th students at the “big school” is this Wednesday, August 27th. We also have a new Kindergarten teacher, Kristal Oviedo. So wel-come back to all the old teachers and students, and a warm welcome to the new ones. This week we will be starting the resurfacing of our schoolyard. The schoolyard was last resurfaced in 1997, and since that time the school parents have sten-ciled in a number of additions, including maps and play areas. The yard itself is also the weekend parking lot for our church goers, and the garbage trucks make a few trips in each week to empty our bins. So there is quite a lot of “traffic” besides the children running at recess and lunch. The area in front of the Gym’s side entrance doors was also in need of repair. The pavement had “alligatored” and the concrete had some serious holes and cracks, presenting a tripping hazard.

Before we could begin this work we had the sew-er and supply pipes and the drains inspected, both on the Gym side of the yard and the Flanagan Center side as well. Luckily the report was good and all the lines were clear. The inspection cost $727.

We had 2 estimates for the repair and resurfac-ing of the yard, at approximately 17,645 square feet, it is a large space to cover. We picked the company that could accommodate our small time frame, between the end of Basketball camp and the beginning of school. Af-ter the trenching and rebuilding of the Gym areas, the cracks will be resealed, the oil spots treated, the surface will be coated and the courts will be striped. So, weather permitting, the project should be completed in about 4 days, and the cost will be $10,800.

We apologize for this inconvenience that hap-pens to be during these first days of school. But we can also look forward to a newly paved schoolyard. Thanks for your understanding and support to make our facility safe and beautiful.

The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Ques on: Is the ins tu on of marriage just about hav-ing children?

Answer from Gaudium et Spes: Marriage to be sure is not ins tuted solely for procrea on; rather, its very na-ture as an unbreakable compact between persons, and the welfare of the children, both demand that the mutu-al love of the spouses be embodied in a rightly ordered manner, that it grow and ripen. Therefore, marriage persists as a whole manner and communion of life, and maintains its value and indissolu-bility, even when despite the o en intense desire of the couple, offspring are lacking. Ques on: What ideals are recommended for the family structure?

Answer from Gaudium et Spes: The family is a kind of school of deeper humanity. But if it is to achieve the full flowering of its life and mission, it needs the kindly com-munion of minds and the joint delibera on of spouses, as well as the painstaking coopera on of parents in the educa on of their children. The ac ve presence of the father is highly beneficial to their forma on. The children, especially the younger among them, need the care of their mother at home. This domes c role of hers must be safely preserved, though the legi mate social progress of women should not be underrated on that account. Children should be so educated that as adults they can follow their voca on, including a religious one, with a mature sense of responsibility and can choose their state of life; if they marry, they can thereby establish their family in favorable moral, social and economic condi-

ons. Parents or guardians should by prudent advice provide guidance to their young with respect to founding a fami-ly, and the young ought to listen gladly. At the same

me no pressure, direct or indirect, should be put on the young to make them enter marriage or choose a specific partner.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 16: 13-20

‘Who do you say that I am?’ Jesus looked down at the footpath beneath him. He was filled with anxiety because this good brown earth he walked upon would soon end for him. The world in which he lived was going to be taken away from him. Jerusalem waited. As Jesus walked he realized each step north was toward a false safety. As long as he was going north he was away from Jerusalem. But time was running swiftly and the days could now be numbered. John was at his side and saw the worry on Jesus’ face. “What troubles you, Lord?” he asked. Jesus answered with a brave smile. “The future.” he said. Jesus knew that when they reached the Roman city of Caesarea Philippi they would have to turn back. When they started south Jesus would begin the first steps of his own death march. Having crossed to the east side of the Sea of Galilee, the long-robed men walked to Bethsaida where Jesus restored the sight of a blind man. Bethsaida had been rebuilt and renamed Julias, the name of Emperor Augustus’ daughter. This was a political gesture by Philip the Tetrarch. Philip named his own capitol city Caesarea to honor Rome, but added his own name after it to avoid confusion with Caesarea Maritima on the coast. When Jesus and the disciples arrived at Caesarea Philippi they were deep in a gentile country. No Jews lived here. Roman ban-ners blew in the wind outside the palace. Helmeted centurions guard-ed the entry to this remote outpost filled with foreigners who pretend-ed to enjoy the grace of Greece under the watchful eyes of the Em-pire and the Tetrarchy. In one of the outlying villages near the river Jesus found a place to retreat. For a time he would give his full attention to deepen-ing the formation of the disciples, preparing them to carry on after him. He began with the question: “Who do people say that I am?” After they answered incorrectly he asked them directly: “And who do you say that I am?” Peter told him: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus praised him: “Good for you, Simon, son of John.” Jesus as-sured him that such an understanding must have been revealed to him directly “by my Father in heaven.” Jesus placed his hands on Peter’s strong shoulders and solemnly entrusted him with the future. “Peter, you are a rock and on this rock foundation I will build my church.” Peter smiled as Jesus called him by his nickname. Peter means rock. Their faith that Jesus was the Messiah was the corner-stone that would have to support the faith of the disciples for the rest of their lives. Jesus continued: “…and not even death will ever be able to overcome it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven.” The disciples listened intently as they were told that Peter would have the power to bind things and to loose things upon the earth. With these keys to the kingdom Peter would receive the transfer of power. Peter felt a shiver of fear sweep through him. He was just a fisherman. He knew he didn’t have the ability or the strength to achieve such heights. Peter wanted to run; back to his boat, back to Capernaum. But he knew he would never be able to return to his peaceful life as a fisherman. Instead, he stood now be-fore an awesome threshold.

‘Who do you say that I am’... It was merciful that he could not comprehend the immensity of what would follow. Peter was trembling as he heard the sounds of the water gurgling over the rocks in the river. A cool breeze fluttered the leaves of the trees. In the distance there was the sound of sum-mer thunder. It looked like it was going to rain.

We must also answer Jesus’ question: “Who do

you say that I am? Our own answer will describe our faith. It will also describe the life we lead in this world and in the next.
