MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING

Thank you all for attending and supporting the Macmillan

Coffee Morning last Friday. We had SO many cakes and

offers of help that it was a very busy one! We are delighted to

confirm that we will be sending a cheque for £387.40 to

Macmillan Cancer Care (even better than last year, which

Outstanding achievements of Hitherfield Primary School recognised

by the Mayor of London

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has celebrated the outstanding performance of Hitherfield Primary

School with an awards ceremony.

The school was honoured for its work to reduce educational inequality and achieve exceptional results for

children who were previously behind in their studies, at a Schools for Success awards ceremony.

Hitherfield has been recognised for an exciting and innovative curriculum that inspires and leads to high

attainment.

The Schools for Success programme was created by the Mayor in 2017 to improve the support given to

children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme recognises primary and secondary schools

that ensure strong progress for their lowest attaining pupils, has a strong overall performance and shares

their work with other schools.

The ceremony was hosted on Friday 27th September by Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare Joanne

McCartney.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’d like to congratulate the staff of Hitherfield for their excellent

work. Schools for Success was created to celebrate the difference that teachers, teaching assistants,

support staff and governors are making every day to support children and reduce inequalities, and this

school’s inclusive and supportive learning environment is a great example of this. London has the best

schools and teachers in the country, and by working together we can make sure that no young Londoner

is left behind.”

Well done to Nia (Anaconda) and Rayhan (Jaguar) for completing the challenge. You will receive a maths sticker in

the Good News assembly next week. Don’t forget you can email the completed maths challenges to the main

school office or drop them off there too.

This week’s challenge is linked to maths in art. Since September we have been taking part in a whole school art

project with each year group studying a different artist and making links to maths.

Year 5 have been studying Kandinsky’s ‘Composition VIII’

What maths can you see in this artwork? E.g. There are ___ triangles.

Look at the shapes, repeating patterns and lines. What do you notice?

Maths Glossary Number sentence = an equation expressed using numbers and mathematical symbols

(+ - x ÷ = ) e.g 5 + 2 = 7

The ever-popular Eid Fair will be held next

Friday 11th October from 3pm - 5.30pm.

Your children are welcome to come to school

exchange for a 50p donation to their

teacher.

If anyone still has second hand uniform to donate, we will be running another stall at Eid.

We still need more volunteers. Please email

[email protected] or sign up on the

PTA Facebook page.

We will also need some more lovely cake

donations on the day!

Last week was Bike to School

Week. The rains came but we

managed to get pictures of some

of our Super Cyclists.

LAST THURSDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER, ALL THREE YEAR 3 CLASSES VISITED THE HERNE HILL VELODROME FOR A CYCLING SESSION. WE WALKED ALL THE WAY AND ALL THE WAY BACK – EVEN IN THE RAIN! EACH CLASS HAD AN HOUR ON BIKES WITH A CYCLING COACH. THE CLASSES WERE SPLIT INTO GROUPS: A GROUP THAT COULD ACCESS THE HARDER OFF-ROAD COURSE, AND A GROUP THAT WORKED ON CONFIDENCE AND SKILL ON THE TRACK. EACH GROUP HAD AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF FUN, DEMONSTRATING A HUGE AMOUNT OF RESILIENCE AND DETERMINATION TO KEEP PICKING THEMSELVES UP AND KEEP GOING. SOME PEOPLE HAD MANY ENCOUNTERS WITH THE FLOOR OR TREES OR STINGING NETTLES – BUT THEY KEPT GOING!

AT THE VELODROME!

BY AHMED AND LUCA (JAGUAR CLASS)

AT THE VELODROME WE HAD 2 TYPES OF BIKES. WE HAD BMX BIKES AND FROG BIKES. WE HAD RACES ON THE BMX OFF-ROAD COURSE. THE PEOPLE ON THE FROG BIKES WERE HAVING A TRY TO RIDE A BIKE ON THE TRACK. THE PEOPLE ON THE BMX BIKES WENT ON A HILL CALLED

LITTLE BOB AND ONE CALLED BIG BOB.
