B U I L D I N G FORM

ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION

The b u i l d i n g t h a t now serves as the town's Ambulance Garage was co n s t r u c t e d as Harvard's F i r e S t a t i o n i n 1921. The small b u i l d i n g i s a r e c t a n g u l a r , gable-roofed block, covered i n clapboards and s i t t i n g on a stone and concrete foundation. A small h i p - r o o f e d wing i s lo c a t e d along the south w a l l . The present facade has a doorway on the l e f t or south, a s i n g l e garage door, and another doorway centered i n the wide r i g h t bay; i t apears t h i s was once a garage bay, closed to accommodate the town v a u l t . Three gable-roofed dormers s i t on the f r o n t r o o f slope, a shed-roofed dormer on the r e a r . A p a l l a d i a n window l i g h t s the gable end, and an e x t e r i o r chimney r i s e s along t h a t end w a l l .

HISTORICAL NARRATIVE

As e a r l y as 1831 Harvard began e f f o r t s t o p r o t e c t the tonw c i t i z e n s and p r o p e r t y from the danger of f i r e . That year the town voted $100 toward the $268 t h a t was needed t o purchase a f i r e engine, the r e s t t o be r a i s e d by s u b s c r i p t i o n . The town house the engine i n a small enginehouse l o c a t e d i n the b u r y i n g groud near the hay scales. L i t t l e i n f o r m a t i o n i s a v a i l a b l e about f i r e p r o t e c t i o n u n t i l 1875 when the l a r g e f i r e at the Congregational U n i t a r i a n Church h i g h l i g h t e d the town's l a c k of p r e p a r a t i o n . AT t h a t time the town purchased a number of hand pupms, which were s t o r e d at the Town H a l l and a t the Poor Farm. Four years l a t e r the town purchased two ca r r i a g e s f u l l y equiped w i t h the necessary aparatus, one f o r the center and one f o r S t i l l River, a t a cost of $306. I n 1892 the town purchased i t s f i r s t chemical e x t i n g u i s h e r s at a cost of $1200. L i t t l e mention of b u i l d i n g s i s found i n disc u s s i o n of these l a t e 19th century b u i l d i n g s , but t h i s F i r e S t a t i o n dates t o 1921. I t remained i n use u n t i l the l a r g e r b u i l d i n g , l o c a t e d behind i t was co n s t r u c t e d .
