Colonial Revival style of architecture that prevailed in British settlements in North America shortly before and after the American Revolution

Cornice projecting ornamental molding along the top of a building

Doric order the column developed by Dorian Greeks with a simple capital, frieze and cornice

Dutch Colonial Revival a style ofdomestic architecture, primarilycharacterized by gambrel roofs having curved eaves along the length of the house

Eaves the margin or lowest part of a roof projecting over the wall usually includes fascia, soffit and other trim

Façade the front of a building; any face of the building on the street

Finial ornament that forms the upper extremity of a pinnacle, canopy or gable

Fish scale shingles wooden shingles in the shape of fish scales used in Victorian gables

Flared eaves part of a roof that has a gradually diminishing slope and that projects beyond the face of an exterior wall, flaring outward near its lower end; common in rural Dutch Colonial architecture

Frieze a sculptured or ornamental band on a building

Gable vertical triangular portion of the end of a building from the level of the cornice or eaves to the ridge of the roof

Gambrel roof a roof that has two slopes on each side, the lower slope being steeper than the upper

Greek Revival style of architecture that heavily relies on pillars, pediments, symmetry of ancient Greek temples

Hipped Roof a roof that rises by inclined planes from all four sides of the building

Hood a projecting molding over the head of an arch

Italianate like the villas in the Italianate country side

Lintel a horizontal structural member that supports the load over an opening such as a door or window

Lunette crescent shaped or half moon

Moldings a continuous decorative band either carved into or applied to a surface

Palladian window named for architect Andreas Palladio; three windows in which the center is arched and higher than the other two

Parapet a low guarding wall at any point of a sudden drop at the edge of a roof

Pediment a wide, low pitched gablesurmounting the façade of a building in a classical style; any similar triangular crowning element used over doors, windows, and niches

Portico a major porch, usually with a pediment roof supported by classical columns

Queen Anne style of architectureprevalent in the early 18th century;characterized by modified classicalornament use of brickwork in which relief work is carved, multiple rooflines; wood built cottages

Random ashlar stones of various sizes laid in a wall creating a random pattern

Romanesque Combining features of ancient Roman and Byzantine buildings and other local traditions, Romanesque architecture is known by its massive quality, thick walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, barrel vaults, large towers and decorative arcading

Soffit the underside members of abuilding such as cornices, beams and arches

Spire is a tapering conical or pyramidal structure on the top of a building

Tuscan relating to a classical order of architecture characterized by plain bases and capitals and non- fluted columns

Turned a round, wind, twist or coil on a post

Turret a diminutive tower characteristically corbelled from a corner

Veranda a covered porch or balcony, extending along the outside of a building

Victorian Architecture is a seriesof architectural revival styles in the mid-to late19th century. Victorian refers to the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901)

Jones-E.W.Farrington House, Brick built in1881, Italianate details include: the low-pitched pyramidal roof, wide frieze board, broad eaves and bracketing, front veranda with chamfered posts, tall and narrow windows with arches and hood moldings and the cast iron work on the roof.

Page 2. 428 West Cook Street-Residence of Mrs. Richard C. Rookwood Colonial Revival style brick home includes: a symmetrical façade, rectangular shape, centrally placed pediment above the entrance and a hipped roof. Victorian decorative details are seen in the porch with its spindled frieze, geometric rail and turned support columns.

Kiefer This frame home is an example of Queen Anne style architecture and includes: the steeply pitched and hipped roof, asymmetricallayout,beveledglassworkinthewindows,fishscaleshinglingonthegablefaçade,spindledfrieze,turned porchpostandfinialtoppedturret.

Stroud Built 1901 ThisDutchColonialRevivalframehomefeaturesinclude:agambrelroofwithflaredeaves,symmetricalfaçadealongthe main block, columned portico with Tuscan columns, capitals of the Ionic order and a chimney at the far end of the dwelling.

Page 5. 532 West Wisconsin Street-Residence of Ansel Clark-Corning-Clark House Greek Revival architectural style brick home includes: temple-like façade with an attached wing, low-pitched roof, heavily molded front gable with cornice returns, lunette window and columned portico with capitals in the Doric order.

Page 6. 122 East Carroll Street-Residence of Mrs. Ida Tarnutzer An example of simpler domestic architecture that was popular in Portage during the late nineteenth century. Details on this frame home suggest attention to Victorian fanciful aesthetic but with minimal application.

Page 7. 307 West Cook Street-St. Mary Church Rectory Built 1904 TheQueenAnnestylecanbeseeninthisframehomesvariousrooflinesandthewraparoundfrontporch,andwas described as a “commodious and modern building”.

Page 8. 517 West Wisconsin Street-Residence of Samual and Anna Stotzer Built 1897 This Richardsonian Romanesque style residence includes: the rough-faced stones and foundation masonry, tower-like polygonal projection, monochromatic emphasis on materials, parapets and spires and heavy façade masonry detailing. The masonry work, often in granite and seen across all faces of the residence, features front entrance arch with the twisting vines and leaves, while the latter is seen in the central horizontal frieze that features decorative swages and festoons. The side entrance and spindled porch, diamond-pained window lattices and asymmetrical layout of the home are features of the Victorian styles that were popular in Portage at the turn of the century.

Page 9. 704 MacFarlane Road-Residence of John Jacob Eulberg This understated Italianate style brick home includes: emphasis on verticality with a low-pitched roof, front double doors, entryway veranda with chamfered posts and tall and narrow double-paned windows with hood moldings.

Page 10. 513 DeWitt Street-Residence of James and Jessie Baird-C.D. Maine House Built 1892 Queen Anne and Colonial Revival details on this brick home include: pitched roof, brick geometric design that runs along the canted bay, turned posts on the porch and multiple entryways. The Colonial Revival from includes the regular planning, exposed bracketing under the roof eaves and arched window hood molding and lintels.

Page 11. 912 MacFarlane Road-Residence of Albert R. and Abigail Barker Built 1901 This Queen Anne style frame home’s details include: an asymmetrical layout, front-facing dominant gable façade, second-story balcony with a spool and spindled balustrade, beveled glasswork windows and an ashlar stone foundation.

Page 12. 117 East Pleasant Street-Residence of Alvin C. and Emma Taylor Built 1900 Queen Anne style frame home features details with include: the steeply pitched multi-gable roof, asymmetrical layout, decorativelunettewindow,fishscaleshinglingandturnedporchposts.ItalsoincludesfeaturesoftheColonialRevival style seen in the plaster scrollwork panel of the entryway pediment, the columned portico with Doric order capitals and the Palladianwindowonthesecondfloor.
