SS3 9FE 14 th May 2021 Academy School, member of the Southend East Community Academy Trust (SECAT) Starfish Class In Starfish class we have been continuing to learn about our five senses. This week we have been focusing on our sense of taste. Our story focus has been ‘This is the bear and the picnic lunch’. We have been talking about our favourite foods and some food that we are not so keen on! We have been recalling and discussing picnics and have recreated our experiences through lots of picnic role play throughout the week. In the story the bear hid behind the kitchen door. We have been developing our understanding and use of positional language through playing hide and seek games, taking turns and using our vocabulary to describe where the object was positioned. The children were very excited to discover a mini visitor had arrived in nursery when a woodlouse was found on the carpet. This prompted lots of discussion and sharing of ideas as to how the woodlouse had found its way into our nursery. The children had further opportunity to use their positional language in their responses. “Maybe he jumped out of his home, crawled under the door and jumped on the carpet”. We wondered what the woodlouse might like the taste of and what it might eat “leaves”, “water” and “milk” were some ideas the children expressed. After being very careful and looking closely at the woodlouse, we wondered if we could use our mark making skills to draw what we had observed and discussed. The children created some fantastic pictures! The children showed great enthusiasm when they took part in a taste test. We tried various foods and flavours, including tomato puree, vanilla, soy sauce, lemon juice, icing sugar and peppermint. The children were able to describe the taste as “sweet”, “sour” or “salty” and correctly identified some of the flavours. Most of the children liked the taste of the icing sugar the best and linked the taste of peppermint to toothpaste. We explored ideas around healthy and unhealthy foods. This led us to a discussion on the importance of looking after our teeth, what could happen if we don’t brush our teeth and sharing our experiences of visiting the dentist. We explored vocabulary including gums, plaque, cavities, toothbrush and bristles. We developed our fine motor skills, using the toothbrushes and toothpaste during role play to clean the teeth and keep them minty fresh! Well done Starfish Class

Starfish Class In Starfish class we have been continuing to learn about our five senses. This week we have been focusing on our sense of taste. Our story focus has been ‘This is the bear and the picnic

lunch’. The children were very excited to

discover a mini visitor had arrived in nursery when a woodlouse was found on the carpet.

This led us to a

discussion on the importance of looking after our teeth, what could happen if we don’t brush our teeth and sharing our experiences of visiting the dentist. We explored vocabulary including gums, plaque, cavities, toothbrush and bristles. We developed our fine motor skills, using the toothbrushes and toothpaste during role play to clean the teeth and keep them minty fresh! Well done Starfish Class

Seahorse Class This week we have been investigating the country Australia. Using Google Earth, we located Australia and realised it was on the opposite side of the world to the UK. We discovered it can take longer than 1 day to fly to Australia, as the aeroplane would need to stop to refuel. Other interesting facts we have discovered have included: there are 24 million people who live in Australia, 22 United Kingdoms are the same area size as Australia and the Great Barrier Reef is so large that it can be seen from space. We have listened to music played on a Didgeridoo and sang some Australian nursery rhymes including the

Australian version of the 12 days of Christmas. We have used cardboard tubes to design out own Didgeridoos. In Literacy have been applying our phonics to blend and write a variety of words, captions, and sentences connected to under the sea animals. We have discovered the variety of land and sea animals that inhabit Australia and took part in a quiz to identify some unique features of animals such as possums, koalas, kangaroos, sea cucumbers and wombats. The children created their own sea creature who could live in the Great Barrier Reef using a variety of resources. Inspired by the hot weather in Australia some children used the crates to construct an outdoor play area complete with a trampoline and BBQ. We have been learning about Aboriginal art called ‘dreamings’ – pictures painted on rocks to tell stories. The children then designed their own ‘dreamings’ by finger painting dots using mud mixed with paint on pictures of native Australian animals. In PE the children have been developing their chest throwing passes and working as part of a team during a sports game. In Maths, we have been exploring money. The kitchen area has been transformed into a shop, where the children have used toy coins and price tagged objects to buy and sell. We have ordered coins in value from least to most and have made different amounts using a variety of coins.

Great work Seahorse Class

Oyster Class

This week we have been looking at The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, which is written from the point of view of the wolf. Al, the wolf, explains that the whole thing was just a big misunderstanding. The children have really enjoyed hearing Al’s explanation of what happened. They got into role as Al and explored his feelings. Asking him questions about his behaviour in the story

The children completed some comparison sentences identifying similarities and differences between the wolf character in both books.

In Maths lessons we have been learning to find quarters of shapes

and numbers.

In PSHE we looked at the story of Gloomy Baboony who is feeling sad, but he is not sure why. We discovered it is ok to feel sad, we all do sometimes! We thought about our own feelings and the feelings of our friends. We also considered the importance of listening.

Seagull Class

This week the children in Seagull Class have been very busy. We have been talking about Road Safety in PSHE and have designed some fantastic road safety posters and explored other ways of getting the safety message across. We have also been learning in computing how to use a spreadsheet and have been introduced to some new vocabulary including ‘cell’, ‘column’, ‘row’ and ‘data’. In English this week we finished our unit on Monster Poems and have proofread, edited and top copied the final versions-I have to say they are wonderful and the class really enjoyed writing these. In Maths this week we have learned about telling the time to 5 minute intervals and have started to understand that there are 24hours in a day. Well done Seagull Class, another great week of learning from you all.

Heron Class

This week Heron class have been continuing our rainforest topic by writing our own version of an Ananse fable from Africa. Set in the rainforest with a chameleon as the main character, there have been lots of exciting adventures. In art we have sketched a rainforest animal to add to our class display.

In maths we have continued with our fraction unit where we have been comparing fractions and learning to add them. Also, putting our skills to the test by solving word problems. We have begun a new investigation with plants to observe how water travels through them using dye. Some new skills have been learnt this week in PE, where we threw a javelin and in music, where we learnt to play the violin. Fantastic effort this week Heron class.

Curlew Class

This week Year 4 finished their Maths unit on money and started learning about time. They have continued to plan their sci-fi narratives and spent lots of time creating word banks ready to write their exciting stories next week. They have also learned about the Prime Meridian and in R.E. they created some brilliant comic strips to show why Lent is important to Christians. They also had great fun using their electrical circuit print blocks to create some amazing patterns, but secretly I think the most fun was rolling the printing paint out in the tray. A fabulous week from Curlews again, have a great weekend everyone from Mrs. Emmings and Mrs. Edwards x

Sanderling Class This week in Year Five, we have learned how to measure and draw angles using a protractor, at which Year Five have excelled, making Mrs Ali extremely proud. We have also learned about the importance of pottery as a primary source for historians when trying to learn about the Ancient Greek civilisation, daily lives and important events such as the Olympics. We then designed our own 2021 pottery patterns ready to bring to life in clay next week. For PE, we even hosted our very own Sanderling Olympic Games: Houston won Bronze, Guthrum won Silver and Thorkell won Gold and then celebrated their win with a victory slide down the Hinguar Hill!

In other news, our caterpillars have moved into the chrysalis stage and were moved into their butterfly station where we hope to catch them emerging as butterflies.

Avocet Class

It has been another creative week in Year 6.

In English on Monday, we looked at Cinquain poems and then wrote our own. The children came up with some great Kennings for different nouns, like calling a butterfly a 'flower-lounger' and grass a 'ground-hugger'. We then looked at the poem 'The Magic Box' by Kit Wright and noted the poetic features it contained. The following day the children wrote their own free verse versions of the poem, which were absolutely fantastic, albeit rather bizarre!

After finishing the William Morris inspired pictures, we then made a 10cm by 10cm window out of squared paper to choose the most interesting part of our picture. We have now started our second picture where we are carefully copying the contents of this square and then translating the image 5 times to create a repeating pattern (finished pictures to be included in next week's newsletter). Have a lovely weekend Year 6. I look forward to seeing you all on Monday. Miss Eakins x

Cashless Payments Due to health and safety concerns, we no longer accept cash in line with shops, so that we minimise the contact with money and the possible COVID transfer to pupils and staff. Our card machine is now live and able to take payments via the school office if

you are having any problems using the online banking service.

The following banking information will enable you to make direct payment to the school: Lloyds Bank, Sort Code 30-97-84, Acc No 64604160. For further information please contact a member of the school office. If you do pay online, please ensure you give your payment a reference and

include your child’s name.

Please use the abbreviations below: Ext = Extendables, Dnr = Dinners, Mu = Music, Sw = Swimming, Nur = Nursery attendance fees, NEM = Nursery Enrichment money

If you are unable to provide a reference through the bank, please send an email to the school office detailing what you have paid and who it is for. This ensures the money is allocated correctly and we won’t need to chase you for things you have already paid for. Remember that childcare vouchers can only be used for Nursery fees or Extendables.

While the season for coughs and colds continues, you may be anxious as to whether you or your child is developing symptoms of Covid-19 or if it is just a general cold. The symptom checker here is provided to help you make this decision.
