halfway mark and received $179k in pledges in support of our community
hall and kitchen project. We need a little over $21k in donations to start the
project. We are over 3000+ strong community in Greater Richmond area.
This means if every community member donates $25, we will reach our re-

Festival of India (FOI) 2018

Dear Friends, The Festival of India 2018 is scheduled for September 29th & 30th at the Greater Richmond Convection Center from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00pm. The FOI team has already started working on the souvenir book and is looking for your support. We invite you to contact businesses that you deal with, as well your employers and ask for them to place an advertisement in the book. Let us know if you or your employer would like to participate in supporting the souvenir book. If your employer would like the to meet the FOI team and have us explain the complete package of benefits in sponsoring the festival and participating in the souvenir book and we will be glad to meet with them. New volunteers are always welcome. Please contact us if you would like to explore the various opportunities for volunteering at the event or serving on the committee. FOI Cultural Team Update
We are preparing for the 2018 grand show on 29th and 30th of Sept. at the Richmond Center.
We invite all dance teachers, choreographers, dance directors, teams, all participants along with their families to
come and show their amazing creativity on the stage. We appreciate your time and support for the excellent cultural
program. Website will be updated soon with all detailed rules and regulations. We have few changes this year so
please pay close attention to these.
Last Day of Entries (without late fees) - Sunday, September 9th, 2018 (11:59 PM)

Many of you have been asking and eagerly waiting to hear the competitions themes this year.
Competitions categories for 2018 FOI are as follows:
1. Innocent Feet: Choose sweet and upbeat baalgeet in any language and perform the group dance. Children’s
songs from movies or nursery rhymes are allowed. Any dance form or instrumental performance is allowed. No
singing is allowed. Emphasize on costumes and props.
Ages 5-8 years; Time: 8 min max. Minimum of 4 participants
2. Got dance? : Divide the participants into at least two teams and show who is better or different! Example:
choose songs that show battle between girls and boys OR “young” and “Not so young”. Use creativity to show
battles between the two and prove who can dance better, move better, laugh better, play better, and so on. This
category should show humorous as well as entertaining factor. Use vibrant costumes and props. Any dance form
or instrumental performance is allowed. No singing is allowed.
Ages: 6-13; Time: 8 min max. Minimum of 4 participants
3. Romance in Cinema: Indian cinema is big on romantic songs. Show your creativity in performance on the stage
using famous romantic songs from movies. Choose songs with most entertaining value and show different moods
of love, passion, ardor, adoration, affection, devotion, attachment. Any dance form and instrumental perform-
ance is allowed. Use appropriate costumes and props to show the talent.
Ages 14 and above; Time: 8 min max. Minimum of 4 participants
4. Folk competition: Choose folk songs from regional languages or from movies and show the Indian folk dances
with vibrant colors. Mixing of more than one folk style is allowed. Emphasize on costumes, typical folk dances
and props.
Age Groups: 8-13 and 14 and up; Time: 6 min max. Minimum of 4 participants
5. "Storytime": Pick any story from Indian culture and show it in the form of dance drama. The story can be reli-
gious, mythical, historical, patriotic or any famous folk lore. Examples: Story of Radha Krishna, Jatayu, Bhagat
Singh, Meera, JalyianwalaBaug, Satyagraha, Laila-Majnu, Sohni-Mahiwal, Taj Mahal, Ganesh and Kartikeya
etc. or any regional folk story. Show the story with creative props and artistic performance. Movie songs or
scenes are allowed.
Ages: All ages from 6 and above. Time 10 min max. Minimum of 4 participants

OUTSTANDING LIFE SERVICE TO HCV
The Program as approved by the Board of Directors of HCV in 2015 is designed to continue every year. As you
are aware the awardees for 2015, 2016 and 2017 were Dr. Manikoth Kurup, Dr. Narsimha Chari and Mr. Inder
Midha, respectively.
This year’s Selection Committee is soliciting nominations for the award for the year 2018. The nominations
should reach the following address by September 30, 2018. Each nomination should accompany a short state-
ment as to why the nominee deserves the award. Otherwise, just a name of the nominee should suffice. Selec-
tion Committee will gather the relevant information.

“A person who is or was a member in good standing, who made significant contributions to the pursuit of the

ing communities and is a person of good character and moral principles.”
