picturesque village of Cawthorne. “I’d say it was the location that first attracted us to the property,” says David. “Cawthorne is a small conservation village, so it’s extremely attractive and has a really traditional feel, and though the setting feels very rural it’s also surprisingly convenient. In terms of the house itself, it was a nice size and though it’s in the middle of the village it backs onto woodland so has a wonderful feeling of privacy. It also presented us with a project, which was something we were looking for.”

“When we bought the house in 2008, it was rundown in need of a makeover,” continues David, “and so over the years, bit by bit, we have gone through and renovated the entire property. We had to install a new hot water system, re-wire, strip back walls and ceilings and re-plaster… but in doing so, as well as being able to add some beautiful fixtures and fittings, it also enabled us to install a great deal of modern technology such as under-floor heating and full home automation. However, throughout the process it was very important for us to maintain the character of the property, so all of the work has been carried out in a very sympathetic manner and the house still retains some lovely period features.”

“From the large kitchen and dining area we have full-width bi-fold doors that lead straight out onto the decked terrace, which creates a lovely connection between inside and out during the summer,” says David. “The garden is a very attractive and generous space, and because it backs onto woodland, which in turn leads to the parkland of Cannon Hall, it feels wonderfully peaceful and secluded.” “The village shop and local pub are just a stroll away,” says David, “and our immediate surroundings feel very rural, however good transport links means it’s very easy to commute to places such as Sheffield and Leeds; we definitely have the best of both worlds.”

“We’ll be sad to leave this house when the time comes to move,” says David, “but I for one will also miss the feel of the village and the sheer peace and quiet, and I know that my wife will miss the many miles of beautiful walks and spending time in the garden with its wonderful array of birds and wildlife.”


During the renovation process we altered the layout to create a lovely big kitchen and dining room. It was

designed to be a space for the family, so has a sofa, a big dining table and a wood burner that creates a wonderfully cosy atmosphere. It’s a really sociable space in which we tend to spend most of our time.
