Considering and AP or an IB Course?

• Colleges want to know that you are challenging yourself.• Most universities expect students to complete 4 years of each of the following

academics: math, social studies, English, and science. This can be standard level OR Honors/AP level.

• Talk with AP & IB teachers to understand the content and rigor of the course: (Remember that these are college level classes so balance your schedule realistically and consider your extracurricular commitments!

▪ English: Mr. Cronin, Mr. Stetson, Ms. Couchman, Ms. Besco, Ms. Long ▪ Science: Mr. Silak, Ms. Bolakowski, Ms. Nelson, and Mr. Szukaitis, Ms.

So you are thinking about taking your first AP class?

AP teachers recommend from experience the following student traits that are necessary for success in an AP class at NHS. Please self-reflect and consider...

24

Page 25: High School Counselors Northville · • List alternates for your elective choices on your course selection sheet. (Do not enter alternates in Mistar, we only need them listed on

Personal Traits:● Self-motivated● Reading text for understanding● Strong written skills● Critical Thinking● Proactive in seeking help/getting questions answered● Class engagement/participation● Proactive in communicating with teachers● Willingness to be a contributing group member for

projects/labs● Willingness to challenge yourself and have realistic

expectations● Strong test scores● Intention of taking the AP Exam in May● Can handle the rigor of a college class

Page 26: High School Counselors Northville · • List alternates for your elective choices on your course selection sheet. (Do not enter alternates in Mistar, we only need them listed on

Additional points to consider:

● Your entire schedule load. Ask yourself not just can you handle a specific AP class, but can you balance/handle the entire rigor of the schedule you are selecting? ○ We have seen many students struggle in classes because

they jump from an on-level schedule to multiple Honors/AP/IB classes and cannot manage all of the expectations at once

● The majority of the grade earned in an AP class is based on tests and projects/labs. Ask yourself how your grades have been determined in previous classes? Recognize that HW, classwork, and extra credit are NOT large parts of an earned grade in an AP class.

FAFSA4caster is for anyone who is not yet ready to submit a FAFSA form—it’s recommended for high
