Starting with a dramatic morning rally of
over 2,000 Hoffa delegates and alternates,
followed by their march into the Paris
Hotel convention center—“a sea of red vests,”
marveled one observer—yesterday’s convention
proceedings proved our union is UNITED be-hind the Hoffa-Hall slate.
The first session added to this picture of unity,
as committee reports and resolutions were
greeted with roars of approval from delegates
without one voice of opposition. (See excerptsof convention proceedings on opposite page.)
The image of our union on themarch received confirmation when
General President Hoffa reported
the news, from a note passed to
him on the podium, that the Team-
sters had just been announced the
winners in an election contest to
represent 3,100 pilots of Republic
Airlines.
In keeping with the spirit of the day, dozens of
delegates then swarmed onto the podium at the
invitation of popular recording artist Tom
Morello, to join him in a round of labor songs.
“We’re on the Move!”
“This first session proves we’re the Number
One union in America,” declared an excited del-
egate from Ohio. “We address the issues, we’re
continuing to organize the unorganized, and
we’re proud of our union leadership.”Convention resolutions passed by the dele-
gates committed the Teamsters toaction fighting the War on Workers,
opposing Right-to-Work (for less)
laws, blocking cross-border trucking
and defending our 200,000-strong
public-sector membership from
budget-cutting attack.

“Thanks to NAFTA,
and CAFTA, and PNTR,there are a lot of things we used to
make in Ohio that wedon’t make any-
more—Etch-a-sketchtoys, number 2 pencils,
Eveready batteries, Campbell Soup noodles, Amana stoves.
“They call that Free Trade. you know what I call it? Bad Legislation.”
–Al MixonVice President At-Large
“Mexican Trucks aren’t safe. Their driversdon’t have to meet the
same safety standardsthat ours do.
“Now the DOT can listen to us, and to the rest of the American people who don’t want dangerous Mexicantrucks on our highways.
“Or they can listen to the big multinationalsthat want to drive down our wages by opening
the border.“We’ll make sure they listen to us, one
way or the other.”
–Tyson JohnsonVice President, Southern Region
“Now we all know these are tough economic
times. Everywhere you look, people who keep our streets safe and teach our kids are agreeing to cuts in wages and benefits they know they’ll never get back.
“We agree there needs to be shared sacrifice. SHARED sacrifice. If you want a middle class, you
can’t just demand sacrifice from people in the middle.”
–Gregory FloydPresident, Local 237
“The reason for right to work bills is, pure and simple, to destroy unions.
“It’s the same story in all the right-to-work states. Wages are 15 percent lower
for all workers in right-to-work states. 21 percent more workers don’t have health insurance.
“They spend $2,000 a year less on K-12education. Workers
are 50 percent more likely to die on the job.
